Laser feedback interferometry with THz QCLs: A new technology for imaging and materials analysis
Considerable interest exists for sensing and imaging technologies in the terahertz (THz) spectral range, in particular for the interrogation of materials of an organic or biological nature. Development in THz quantum cascade lasers is seeing higher operating temperatures and peak output powers in pulsed mode, accentuating their place as the preferred source of coherent THz frequency radiation. Technological development of interferometric sensing schemes continues to take advantage of practical improvements in THz quantum cascade lasers. In this Summary, we give a brief overview of some recent developments in this regard

The convective storm initiation project
Copyright @ 2007 AMSThe Convective Storm Initiation Project (CSIP) is an international project to understand precisely where, when, and how convective clouds form and develop into showers in the mainly maritime environment of southern England. A major aim of CSIP is to compare the results of the very high resolution Met Office weather forecasting model with detailed observations of the early stages of convective clouds and to use the newly gained understanding to improve the predictions of the model. A large array of ground-based instruments plus two instrumented aircraft, from the U.K. National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and the German Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK), Karlsruhe, were deployed in southern England, over an area centered on the meteorological radars at Chilbolton, during the summers of 2004 and 2005. In addition to a variety of ground-based remote-sensing instruments, numerous rawin-sondes were released at one- to two-hourly intervals from six closely spaced sites. The Met Office weather radar network and Meteosat satellite imagery were used to provide context for the observations made by the instruments deployed during CSIP. This article presents an overview of the CSIP field campaign and examples from CSIP of the types of convective initiation phenomena that are typical in the United Kingdom. It shows the way in which certain kinds of observational data are able to reveal these phenomena and gives an explanation of how the analyses of data from the field campaign will be used in the development of an improved very high resolution NWP model for operational use. This work is funded by the National Environment Research Council following an initial award from the HEFCE Joint Infrastructure Fund
Cryptosporidium Priming Is More Effective than Vaccine for Protection against Cryptosporidiosis in a Murine Protein Malnutrition Model
Cryptosporidium is a major cause of severe diarrhea, especially in malnourished children. Using a murine model of C. parvum oocyst challenge that recapitulates clinical features of severe cryptosporidiosis during malnutrition, we interrogated the effect of protein malnutrition (PM) on primary and secondary responses to C. parvum challenge, and tested the differential ability of mucosal priming strategies to overcome the PM-induced susceptibility. We determined that while PM fundamentally alters systemic and mucosal primary immune responses to Cryptosporidium, priming with C. parvum (106 oocysts) provides robust protective immunity against re-challenge despite ongoing PM. C. parvum priming restores mucosal Th1-type effectors (CD3+CD8+CD103+ T-cells) and cytokines (IFNÎł, and IL12p40) that otherwise decrease with ongoing PM. Vaccination strategies with Cryptosporidium antigens expressed in the S. Typhi vector 908htr, however, do not enhance Th1-type responses to C. parvum challenge during PM, even though vaccination strongly boosts immunity in challenged fully nourished hosts. Remote non-specific exposures to the attenuated S. Typhi vector alone or the TLR9 agonist CpG ODN-1668 can partially attenuate C. parvum severity during PM, but neither as effectively as viable C. parvum priming. We conclude that although PM interferes with basal and vaccine-boosted immune responses to C. parvum, sustained reductions in disease severity are possible through mucosal activators of host defenses, and specifically C. parvum priming can elicit impressively robust Th1-type protective immunity despite ongoing protein malnutrition. These findings add insight into potential correlates of Cryptosporidium immunity and future vaccine strategies in malnourished children
Terahertz quantum cascade laser bandwidth prediction
Recent research shows that terahertz quantum cascade lasers are well-suited to high speed free space communication. The results of both theoretical and laboratory work indicate the devices are able to deliver bandwidths in the gigahertz to tens of gigahertz range without the burden of relaxation oscillations found in diode lasers. Using a novel rate equation model we explore the frequency response characteristics of a real device and report on the finding of a strongly peaked bias current-dependent response
Who needs bereavement support? A population based survey of bereavement risk and support need
This study identifies and describes the profiles of bereavement risk and support needs of a community sample in Australia and tests the fit of the data with the three-tiered public health model for bereavement support. Family members who were bereaved 6-24 months prior to the survey and who were clients of four funeral providers participated (May-July 2013). A postal survey was used to collect information about bereaved people's experience of caring and perceived satisfaction with any bereavement support provided. The questionnaire included a validated risk assessment screening measure for Prolonged Grief Disorder (PG-13). A total of 678 bereaved people responded. The model predicted that 60% of the sample would be low risk, 30% moderate risk, and 10% high risk. Actual figures were very close at 58.4%, 35.2%and 6.4% respectively. The analysis of the demographic characteristics, experience and impact of caring and bereavement, and satisfaction with support received from a variety of sources revealed differential experiences and needs that align with the expectation of low, moderate, and high bereavement support need, as articulated in the public health model. This is the first empirical test of the public health model of bereavement support. As there is a lack of clear evidence to guide development and allocation of bereavement support programs, the findings have the potential to inform the ability of services, community organizations and informal networks to prioritize care according to each level of bereavement need. This is essential to achieve cost-effective and equitable resource allocation
Cork oak and climate change: disentangling drought effects on cork chemical composition
Climate change induces in the Mediterranean region more frequent and extreme events, namely, heat
waves and droughts, disturbing forest species and affecting their productivity and product quality.
The cork oak (Quercus suber) is present along the western Mediterranean basin and its outer bark
(cork) is sustainably collected and used for several products, mainly wine bottle stoppers. Since most
cork properties arise from its chemical composition, this research studies the effect of drought on cork
chemical composition (suberin, lignin, polysaccharides and extractives) and on polysaccharide and
suberin monomeric composition. Three sets of cork samples, from the same site, were examined: in one
set the cork grew without drought; in another two drought events occurred during cork growth and in
the third one drought event happened. The results show that, in general, drought does not affect the
proportion of the main components of cork, the monomers of suberin or of polysaccharides, with few
exceptions e.g. drought increased ethanol extractives and xylose in polysaccharides and decreased
arabinose in polysaccharides. The variability associated to the tree is much more relevant than the
effect of drought conditions and affects all the parameters analyzed. Therefore, our research suggests
that the tree genetic information, or its expression, plays a much more important role on the chemical
composition of cork than the drought conditions occurring during cork growth. In practical terms, the
potential increased occurrence of droughts arising from climatic changes will not compromise the
performance of cork as a sealant for wine bottlesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
