An inefficient dwarf: Chemical abundances and the evolution of the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy

We present detailed chemical element abundance ratios of 17 elements in three metal poor stars in the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy, which we combine with extant data from the literature to assess the predictions of a novel suite of galaxy chemical evolution models. The spectroscopic data were obtained with the Keck/HIRES instrument and revealed low metallicities of [Fe/H]=-2.12, -2.13 and -2.67 dex. While the most metal poor star in our sample shows an overabundance of [Mn/Fe] and other Fe-peak elements, our overall findings are in agreement with previous studies of this galaxy: elevated values of the [alpha/Fe] ratios that are similar to, or only slightly lower than, the halo values but with SN Ia enrichment at very low metallicity, as well as an enhancement of the ratio of first to second peak neutron capture elements [Y/Ba] with decreasing metallicity. The chemical evolution models which were tailored to reproduce the metallicity distribution function of the dSph, indicate that UMi had an extended star formation which lasted nearly 5 Gyr with low efficiency and are able to explain the [Y/Ba] enhancement at low metallicity for the first time. In particular, we show that the present day lack of gas is probably due to continuous loss of gas from the system, which we model as winds.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, table

Mémoire phonique « incarnée » du théâtre. Prolégomènes d’une approche cognitive

    Get PDF
Today the model of a memory located in a specific brain zone is abandoned in favour of a memory model located within the whole body and distributed among different mechanisms. Memory is thus considered as a multimodal process strictly rooted in motor mechanisms. Within the frame of an overall reflection on vocal memory in the theatre, this article explores research paths that might be relevant to the « tacit » and « embodied » dimension of the actor’s and the spectator’s memory. The author associates methodologies specific to theatre studies with knowledges from the cognitive sciences in order to find new viewpoints, both on the history of players’ techniques and current theories

Abstract – ENThe research on the actor-spectator relationship can achieve a higher precision thanks to the new cognitive models. Linked to the propositions of embodied mind and neurophenomenology, proposed by Varela in the 90s, this models propose some important paradigm’s shift: 1. a direct connection between perception and action has been showed; 2. consciousness is not the result of the brain alone but it is a circular process between human being and the world; 3. the description of the cognitive processes has to bypass of the logical dichotomy inner/outer. From the point of view of this advancements, the study of the actor-spectator relationship gains new concepts which improve the precision of the analysis: the dilated intension, the performative body schema, the co-constitution of the theatrical space, the spectator performative experience

Physical Fitness and BodyWeight in Pre-Adolescent School Children: The EUROFIT Motor Fitness Test Explored on 11-12-Year-Old Children.

    Get PDF
Nowadays, the early prevention of obesity in childhood is one of the most critical public health issues. More than half of children and adolescents worldwide do not meet the recommendation of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day. This trend can reduce physical fitness and, consequently, cause a decrease in the quality of life throughout the lifespan. Physical fitness, defined as a set of abilities to perform physical activity and exercise (such as aerobic capacity, endurance, strength, flexibility), is considered one of the most important health markers in adulthood and childhood as well as adolescence. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the physical fitness of pre-adolescent children of the Emilia-Romagna region. Children’s anthropometric parameters (height and weight) and physical fitness levels - assessed via the EUROFIT test battery - were measured. In all of the applied EUROFIT tests, children’s performance was below the sucient age and gender values. Moreover, it was negatively associated with obesity. Our research provided evidence that the general fitness of our sample was low and the performance of overweight/obese children was lower compared to the under/normal weight students

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Workers’ Skills: Upskilling and Reskilling in Organisations

    Get PDF
Aim/Purpose This paper aims to investigate the recent developments in research and practice on the transformation of professional skills by artificial intelligence (AI) and to identify solutions to the challenges that arise. Background The implementation of AI in various organisational sectors has the potential to automate tasks that are currently performed by humans or to reduce cognitive workload. While this can lead to increased productivity and efficiency, these rapid changes have significant implications for organisations and workers, as AI can also be perceived as leading to job losses. Successfully adapting to this transformation will lead companies and institutions to new working and organisational models, which requires implementing measures and strategies to upskill or reskill workers. Organisations, therefore, face considerable challenges such as guiding employees towards the change process, dealing with the cost of training, and ensuring fairness and inclusion posed by age, gender, and cultural diversity. Methodology A narrative review has been conducted to analyse research and practice on the impact of AI on human skills in organisations. Contribution This work contributes to the body of knowledge by examining recent trends in research and practice on how AI will transform professional skills and workplaces, highlighting the crucial role played by transversal skills and identifying strategies that can support organisations and guide workers toward the upskilling and reskilling challenges. Findings This work found that introducing AI in organisations combines many organisational strategies simultaneously. First, it is critical to map the transversal skills needed by workers to mitigate the current skills gap within the workplace. Secondly, organisations can help workers identify the skills required for AI adoption, improve current skills, and develop new skills. In addition, the findings show that companies need to implement processes to support workers by providing ad hoc training and development opportunities to ensure that workers’ attitudes and mental models towards AI are open and ready for the changing labour market and its related challenges. Recommendation for Researchers AI is a complex and multifaceted field that encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including computer science, mathematics, engineering, and behavioural and social sciences. Researchers should take a transdisciplinary approach to enable the integration of knowledge and perspectives from different fields that are essential to understanding the full range of implications and applications of AI. Future Research Further research is needed to understand the impact of AI on human skills and the role of soft skills in the adoption of AI in organisations. Future studies should also consider the challenges presented by Industry 5.0, which is likely to involve the integration of new technologies and automation on an even greater scale

Characterizing the Circumgalactic Medium of Quasars at z ∼\sim 2.2 through Hα\alpha and Lyα\alpha Emission

The discovery of giant quasar Lyα\alpha nebulae at z>2z>2 has opened up the possibility to directly study in emission the Circumgalactic and Intergalactic Medium (CGM/IGM). However, the resonant nature of the Lyα\alpha line and its different emission mechanisms hamper the ability to constrain both the kinematics and physical properties of the CGM/IGM. Here, we present results of a pilot project aiming at the detection of CGM Hα\alpha emission, a line which does not suffer from these limitations. To this end, we first used KCWI to detect Lyα\alpha emission around three bright quasars with 2.25<z<2.272.25<z<2.27, a range which is free from bright IR sky lines for Hα\alpha, and then selected the most extended nebula for Hα\alpha follow-up with MOSFIRE. Within the MOSFIRE slit, we detected Hα\alpha emission extending up to 20 physical kpc with a total Hα\alpha flux of FHα_{ \textrm{H}\alpha}=(9.5 ±\pm 0.9) ×\times 10−18^{-18} erg s−1^{-1} cm−2^{-2}. Considering the Lyα\alpha flux in the same region, we found FLyα_{ \textrm{Ly}\alpha}/FHα_{ \textrm{H}\alpha}=3.7 ±\pm 0.3 consistent with that obtained for the Slug Nebula at z=2.275=2.275 and with recombination radiation. This implies high densities or a very broad density distribution within the CGM of high-redshift quasars. Moreover, the Hα\alpha line profile suggests the presence of multiple emitting components overlapping along our line-of-sight and relatively quiescent kinematics, which seems incompatible with either quasar outflows capable of escaping the potential well of the host halo or disk-like rotation in a massive halo (>1012>10^{12}M⊙_{\odot}).Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 2 table

Privacy-Aware Recommender Systems Challenge on Twitter's Home Timeline

Recommender systems constitute the core engine of most social network platforms nowadays, aiming to maximize user satisfaction along with other key business objectives. Twitter is no exception. Despite the fact that Twitter data has been extensively used to understand socioeconomic and political phenomena and user behaviour, the implicit feedback provided by users on Tweets through their engagements on the Home Timeline has only been explored to a limited extent. At the same time, there is a lack of large-scale public social network datasets that would enable the scientific community to both benchmark and build more powerful and comprehensive models that tailor content to user interests. By releasing an original dataset of 160 million Tweets along with engagement information, Twitter aims to address exactly that. During this release, special attention is drawn on maintaining compliance with existing privacy laws. Apart from user privacy, this paper touches on the key challenges faced by researchers and professionals striving to predict user engagements. It further describes the key aspects of the RecSys 2020 Challenge that was organized by ACM RecSys in partnership with Twitter using this dataset.Comment: 16 pages, 2 table
