In the first three experiments, low power impaired performance on executive-function tasks: The powerless were less effective than the powerful at updating (Experiment 1), inhibiting (Experiment 2), and planning (Experiment 3). Existing research suggests that the powerless have difficulty distinguishing between what is goal relevant and what is goal irrelevant in the environment. A fourth experiment established that the executive-function impairment associated with low power is driven by goal neglect. The current research implies that the cognitive alterations arising from powerlessness may help foster stable social hierarchies and that empowering employees may reduce costly organizational errors.7 p
Multiwavelength Study on Solar and Interplanetary Origins of the Strongest Geomagnetic Storm of Solar Cycle 23
We study the solar sources of an intense geomagnetic storm of solar cycle 23
that occurred on 20 November 2003, based on ground- and space-based
multiwavelength observations. The coronal mass ejections (CMEs) responsible for
the above geomagnetic storm originated from the super-active region NOAA 10501.
We investigate the H-alpha observations of the flare events made with a 15 cm
solar tower telescope at ARIES, Nainital, India. The propagation
characteristics of the CMEs have been derived from the three-dimensional images
of the solar wind (i.e., density and speed) obtained from the interplanetary
scintillation data, supplemented with other ground- and space-based
measurements. The TRACE, SXI and H-alpha observations revealed two successive
ejections (of speeds ~350 and ~100 km/s), originating from the same filament
channel, which were associated with two high speed CMEs (~1223 and ~1660 km/s,
respectively). These two ejections generated propagating fast shock waves
(i.e., fast drifting type II radio bursts) in the corona. The interaction of
these CMEs along the Sun-Earth line has led to the severity of the storm.
According to our investigation, the interplanetary medium consisted of two
merging magnetic clouds (MCs) that preserved their identity during their
propagation. These magnetic clouds made the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF)
southward for a long time, which reconnected with the geomagnetic field,
resulting the super-storm (Dst_peak=-472 nT) on the Earth.Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures, Accepted for publication in Solar Physic
First measurement of low intensity fast neutron background from rock at the Boulby Underground Laboratory
A technique to measure low intensity fast neutron flux has been developed.
The design, calibrations, procedure for data analysis and interpretation of the
results are discussed in detail. The technique has been applied to measure the
neutron background from rock at the Boulby Underground Laboratory, a site used
for dark matter and other experiments, requiring shielding from cosmic ray
muons. The experiment was performed using a liquid scintillation detector. A
6.1 litre volume stainless steel cell was filled with an in-house made liquid
scintillator loaded with Gd to enhance neutron capture. A two-pulse signature
(proton recoils followed by gammas from neutron capture) was used to identify
the neutron events from much larger gamma background from PMTs. Suppression of
gammas from the rock was achieved by surrounding the detector with high-purity
lead and copper. Calibrations of the detector were performed with various gamma
and neutron sources. Special care was taken to eliminate PMT afterpulses and
correlated background events from the delayed coincidences of two pulses in the
Bi-Po decay chain. A four month run revealed a neutron-induced event rate of
1.84 +- 0.65 (stat.) events/day. Monte Carlo simulations based on the GEANT4
toolkit were carried out to estimate the efficiency of the detector and the
energy spectra of the expected proton recoils. From comparison of the measured
rate with Monte Carlo simulations the flux of fast neutrons from rock was
estimated as (1.72 +- 0.61 (stat.) +- 0.38 (syst.))*10^(-6) cm^(-2) s^(-1)

CsI(Tl) for WIMP dark matter searches
We report a study of CsI(Tl) scintillator to assess its applicability in
experiments to search for dark matter particles. Measurements of the mean
scintillation pulse shapes due to nuclear and electron recoils have been
performed. We find that, as with NaI(Tl), pulse shape analysis can be used to
discriminate between electron and nuclear recoils down to 4 keV. However, the
discrimination factor is typically (10-15)% better than in NaI(Tl) above 4 keV.
The quenching factor for caesium and iodine recoils was measured and found to
increase from 11% to ~17% with decreasing recoil energy from 60 to 12 keV.
Based on these results, the potential sensitivity of CsI(Tl) to dark matter
particles in the form of neutralinos was calculated. We find an improvement
over NaI(Tl) for the spin independent WIMP-nucleon interactions up to a factor
of 5 assuming comparable electron background levels in the two scintillators.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, to be published in Nucl. Instrum. and Meth. in

Total variation approximation for quasi-equilibrium distributions
Quasi-stationary distributions, as discussed by Darroch & Seneta (1965), have
been used in biology to describe the steady state behaviour of population
models which, while eventually certain to become extinct, nevertheless maintain
an apparent stochastic equilibrium for long periods. These distributions have
some drawbacks: they need not exist, nor be unique, and their calculation can
present problems. In this paper, we give biologically plausible conditions
under which the quasi-stationary distribution is unique, and can be closely
approximated by distributions that are simple to compute.Comment: 16 page

Cyberbullying in schools: cross-cultural issues
Although the great majority of research studies on cyberbullying have been carried out in western countries (Zych, Ortega & del Rey, 2015), the issue is recognised to be an international one. There has been a tradition of research in the Asian Pacific Rim countries (Smith, Kwak & Toda, 2016), and growing research in other areas such as South-East Asia (Sittichai & Smith, 2015). These studies raise important methodological issues. How similar, or different, is the phenomenon of cyberbullying in different countries? What are the challenges in making comparisons and comparing rates in different countries? Finally, how can such differences be explained? This chapter will examine societal and cross-national variations in bully and victim rates, and characteristics (such as age and gender differences, types of cyberbullying), across a wide range of countries. Explanations of cross-national differences will be discussed in terms of the five factors in the EU Kids Online model: Cultural values [e.g. Hofstede], Education system [schools, colleges], Technological infrastructure [penetration of mobile phones, smart phones and internet], Regulatory framework [policies, legal aspects] and Socio-economic stratification [GDP, socioeconomic inequality]
Multi-scale waves in sound-proof global simulations with EULAG
EULAG is a computational model for simulating flows across a wide range of scales and physical scenarios. A standard option employs an anelastic approximation to capture nonhydrostatic effects and simultaneously filter sound waves from the solution. In this study, we examine a localized gravity wave packet generated by instabilities in Held-Suarez climates. Although still simplified versus the Earth’s atmosphere, a rich set of planetary wave instabilities and ensuing radiated gravity waves can arise. Wave packets are observed that have lifetimes ≤ 2 days, are negligibly impacted by Coriolis force, and do not show the rotational effects of differential jet advection typical of inertia-gravity waves. Linear modal analysis shows that wavelength, period, and phase speed fit the dispersion equation to within a mean difference of ∼ 4%, suggesting an excellent fit. However, the group velocities match poorly even though a propagation of uncertainty analysis indicates that they should be predicted as well as the phase velocities. Theoretical arguments suggest the discrepancy is due to nonlinearity — a strong southerly flow leads to a critical surface forming to the southwest of the wave packet that prevents the expected propagation
A simple mechanistic model of sprout spacing in tumour-associated angiogenesis
This paper develops a simple mathematical model of the siting of capillary sprouts on an existing blood vessel during the initiation of tumour-induced angiogenesis. The model represents an inceptive attempt to address the question of how unchecked sprouting of the parent vessel is avoided at the initiation of angiogenesis, based on the idea that feedback regulation processes play the dominant role. No chemical interaction between the proangiogenic and antiangiogenic factors is assumed. The model is based on corneal pocket experiments, and provides a mathematical analysis of the initial spacing of angiogenic sprouts
