    What Is Found There? Poetry and Emotions in Resistance and Power for Social Change Among Diverse Community Poets

    For many who identify with marginalized social positions, participating in community art has signaled a means of resisting oppressive systems of power. In these settings, art acts as a means of challenging hegemonic ideas, building solidarity and establishing collective power. At the same time, academics have come to embrace the arts as an invigorating and alternative form of research. The arts–and, especially, poetry–have come to be viewed as a means of understanding people’s personal and emotional knowing. In addition, the arts, as well as emotions, have come to be considered as essential components to a deeper understanding of social change. The purpose of this study was to ask about the significance of community poetry and emotions as vehicles for individual and collective resistance and power in social change efforts among diverse community poets in Montréal. Data collection included five poems written by community poets as well as interviews with the poets and community organizers. Three major themes were identified in this study: 1) Individual Acts of Poetic Resistance; 2) Community Poetry in Interaction: Individual and Collective Power; and 3) Poetry and Emotions: Social Change in Community and Beyond. The results of the study pointed to the centrality of emotions in social life and suggested how emotions are effective in the social change endeavour. The study revealed that emotions in social change are largely uncertain and complex, especially in milieus that consist of diverse people. The study also indicated that community poetry and emotions are apt means of accessible discursive spaces and alternative practices for people living in marginalized situations, and, as such, exemplified their role in participatory democracy. Additionally, this study suggested that aesthetic features, such as literary devices, intertwined with emotion, play an essential role in art as social change. This study underscored the need for community organizations and activists to implement activities that emphasize art and emotion, and to validate the contribution these elements can offer to community building and social change. The study’s findings also emphasized the need for scholars to research the role of the community arts in interaction with emotion and social change

    Interactions between the foreign body reaction and Staphylococcus aureus biomaterial-associated infection:Winning strategies in the derby on biomaterial implant surfaces

    Biomaterial-associated infections (BAIs) are an increasing problem where antibiotic therapies are often ineffective. The design of novel strategies to prevent or combat infection requires a better understanding of how an implanted foreign body prevents the immune system from eradicating surface-colonizing pathogens. The objective of this review is to chart factors resulting in sub-optimal clearance of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria involved in BAIs. To this end, we first describe three categories of bacterial mechanisms to counter the host immune system around foreign bodies: direct interaction with host cells, modulation of intercellular communication, and evasion of the immune system. These mechanisms take place in a time frame that differentiates sterile foreign body reactions, BAIs, and soft tissue infections. In addition, we identify experimental interventions in S. aureus BAI that may impact infectious mechanisms. Most experimental treatments modulate the host response to infection or alter the course of BAI through implant surface modulation. In conclusion, the first week after implantation and infection is crucial for the establishment of an S. aureus biofilm that resists the local immune reaction and antibiotic treatment. Although established and chronic S. aureus BAI is still treatable and manageable, the focus of interventions should lie on this first period

    Widening the Angle: Film as Alternative Pedagogy For Wellness In Indigenous Youth

    Indigenous youth face numerous challenges in terms of their well-being. Colonization enforced land and cultural loss, fractured relationships, and restricted the use of the imagination and agentic capacity (Colonial policies, structures, and approaches in education have been detrimental to Indigenous youth (Nardozi, 2013). Many First Nations leaders, community members, and youth have expressed a need for a wider range of activities that move beyond Western models of knowledge and learning (Goulet & Goulet, 2015). School curricula in Indigenous communities are incorporating alternative pedagogical tools, such as the arts, that not only allow youth to explore and express their realities and interests but that also offer them holistic ways of learning and knowing (Yuen et al., 2013). This article describes a participatory arts research project which featured film production and was delivered in the context of a grade 10 Communications Media course. The research took place at a First Nations high school in a Neehithuw (Woodland Cree) community in northern Saskatchewan. This article highlights the content of the films produced, the benefits of the filmmaking experience, and the challenges faced by the teacher and students during the process

    Impact of solid surface hydrophobicity and micrococcal nuclease production on Staphylococcus aureus Newman biofilms

    Staphylococcus aureus is commonly associated with biofilm-related infections and contributes to the large financial loss that accompany nosocomial infections. The micrococcal nuclease Nuc1 enzyme limits biofilm formation via cleavage of eDNA, a structural component of the biofilm matrix. Solid surface hydrophobicity influences bacterial adhesion forces and may as well influence eDNA production. Therefore, it is hypothesized that the impact of Nuc1 activity is dependent on surface characteristics of solid surfaces. For this reason, this study investigated the influence of solid surface hydrophobicity on S. aureus Newman biofilms where Nuc1 is constitutively produced. To this end, biofilms of both a wild-type and a nuc1 knockout mutant strain, grown on glass, salinized glass and Pluronic F-127-coated silanized glass were analysed. Results indicated that biofilms can grow in the presence of Nuc1 activity. Also, Nuc1 and solid surface hydrophobicity significantly affected the biofilm 3D-architecture. In particular, biofilm densities of the wild-type strain on hydrophilic surfaces appeared higher than of the mutant nuc1 knockout strain. Since virulence is related to bacterial cell densities, this suggests that the virulence of S. aureus Newman biofilms is increased by its nuclease production in particular on a hydrophilic surface

    Comparison of image analysis software packages in the assessment of adhesion of microorganisms to mucosal epithelium using confocal laser scanning microscopy

    We have compared current image analysis software packages in order to find the most useful one for assessing microbial adhesion and inhibition of adhesion to tissue sections. We have used organisms of different sizes, the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and the yeast Candida albicans. Adhesion of FITC-labelled H. pylori and C. albicans was assessed by confocal microscopy. Four different Image analysis software packages, NIH-Image, IP Lab, Image Pro+, and Metamorph, were compared for their ability to quantify adhesion of the two organisms and several quantification methods were devised for each package. For both organisms, the dynamic range that could be detected by the software packages was 1×106?1×109 cells/ml. Of the four software packages tested, our results showed that Metamorph software, using our ?Region of Interest? method, with the software's ?Standard Area Method? of counting, was the most suitable for quantifying adhesion of both organisms because of its unique ability to separate clumps of microbial cells. Moreover, fewer steps were required. By pre-incubating H. pylori with the glycoconjugate Lewis b-HSA, an inhibition of binding of 48.8% was achieved using 250 ?g/ml Lewis b-HSA. The method we have devised using Metamorph software, provides a simple, quick and accurate way of quantifying adhesion and inhibition of adhesion of microbial cells to the epithelial surface of tissue sections. The method can be applied to organisms ranging in size from small bacteria to larger yeast cells

    Influence of sub-inhibitory concentrations of antimicrobials on micrococcal nuclease and biofilm formation in Staphylococcus aureus

    Abstract A major contributor to biomaterial associated infection (BAI) is Staphylococcus aureus. This pathogen produces a protective biofilm, making eradication difficult. Biofilms are composed of bacteria encapsulated in a matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) comprising polysaccharides, proteins and extracellular DNA (eDNA). S. aureus also produces micrococcal nuclease (MN), an endonuclease which contributes to biofilm composition and dispersion, mainly expressed by nuc1. MN expression can be modulated by sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations of antimicrobials. We investigated the relation between the biofilm and MN expression and the impact of the application of antimicrobial pressure on this relation. Planktonic and biofilm cultures of three S. aureus strains, including a nuc1 deficient strain, were cultured under antimicrobial pressure. Results do not confirm earlier findings that MN directly influences total biomass of the biofilm but indicated that nuc1 deletion stimulates the polysaccharide production per CFU in the biofilm in in vitro biofilms. Though antimicrobial pressure of certain antibiotics resulted in significantly increased quantities of polysaccharides per CFU, this did not coincide with significantly reduced MN activity. Erythromycin and resveratrol significantly reduced MN production per CFU but did not affect total biomass or biomass/CFU. Reduction of MN production may assist in the eradication of biofilms by the host immune system in clinical situations
