Very-wide-field camera. Proposal of Space Astronomy Laboratory for second Spacelab mission
A proposal is made for inclusion of a very wide field camera onboard Spacelab. Its scientific program is outlined: detection and photometry, spectrography, and star and starlike object photography. The optics, receptor, and mechanical structure are described. Scientific and technical constraints are discussed, and a development plan is detailed. The dust contamination of Spacelab using the camera was also studied
Time-reversal in dynamically-tuned zero-gap periodic systems
We show that short pulses propagating in zero-gap periodic systems can be
reversed with 100% efficiency by using weak non-adiabatic tuning of the wave
velocity at time-scales that can be much slower than the period. Unlike
previous schemes, we demonstrate reversal of {\em broadband} (few cycle) pulses
with simple structures. Our scheme may thus open the way to time-reversal in a
variety of systems for which it was not accessible before.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Letter
Spatial distribution of unidentified infrared bands and extended red emission in the compact galactic HII region Sh 152
We present visible and near IR images of the compact HII region Sh 152. Some
of these images reveal the presence of Extended Red Emission (ERE) around 698
nm and emission from Unidentified Infra Red Bands (UIRBs) at 3.3 and 6.2
micron. Other images show the near infrared (7-12 micron) continuous emission
of the nebula. The ERE emission is found to coincide with the ionized region
and significantly differ from the UIRBs location. Also some evidence is found
in favor of grains as carriers for ERE.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, to be published in the proceedings of the

Special Education Identification in the Louisiana Scholarship Program
The debate over school vouchers continues as more states offer government dollars to fund private schooling for students as a method of improving choice and quality in K-12 education. Previous research in the charter school sector has found that special education enrollment discrepancies between charters and traditional public schools is likely due to a mixture in parental choice making, differential identification practices, and the removal of special education labels. This study is the first experimental analysis of the impact of a enrollment in a private school choice program on special education identification and de-identification. Using data for almost 2,000 students who were randomly assigned to private schools in the Louisiana Scholarship Program (LSP), we find no statistically significant over impact of enrollment in a student’s first choice school on being either identified or de-identified in special education. Analyzing annual trends results in lower probabilities of identification for students in the LSP in Year 2 and Year 3 of the program and higher probabilities of de-identification in Year 2
Searching for additional heating - [OII] emission in the diffuse ionized gas of NGC891, NGC4631 and NGC3079
We present spectroscopic data of ionized gas in the disk--halo regions of
three edge-on galaxies, NGC 891, NGC 4631 and NGC 3079, covering a wavelength
range from [\ion{O}{2}] 3727\AA to [\ion{S}{2}] 6716.4\AA.
The inclusion of the [\ion{O}{2}] emission provides new constraints on the
properties of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG), in particular, the origin of the
observed spatial variations in the line intensity ratios. We used three
different methods to derive electron temperatures, abundances and ionization
fractions along the slit. The increase in the [\ion{O}{2}]/H line ratio
towards the halo in all three galaxies requires an increase either in electron
temperature or in oxygen abundance. Keeping the oxygen abundance constant
yields the most reasonable results for temperature, abundances, and ionization
fractions. Since a constant oxygen abundance seems to require an increase in
temperature towards the halo, we conclude that gradients in the electron
temperature play a significant role in the observed variations in the optical
line ratios from extraplanar DIG in these three spiral galaxies.Comment: 43 pages, 29 figure
