    Water Demand for Generating Electricity - A Mathematical Programming Approach with Application in Poland

    This report documents a water demand study developed as a collaborative effort between the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria; the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW), Warsaw, Poland; and the Industry Studies Program of the University of Houston, Houston, Texas, USA. The study developed and applied a mathematical programming model of resource in an electric power plant. The model specifically represents a hypothetical, coal-fired plant located on the Vistula River in Poland. The modeling techniques, however, have very general applicability. The report emphasizes issues of water demand in the modeled plant and also discusses coal transportation, and combustion. Major design and operating options for the plant are described, including the cooling system, water treatment processes, choices of coal type, and mode of transport, railroad or slurry pipeline. These options are constrained by identified standards for air and water quality, and the model is constructed to minimize costs of generating specified loads of electricity in accordance with these constraints. The report provides a detailed description of the model's structure, relating each component to the identified options and constraints. Some general issues in modeling industrial operations are discussed. The report concludes with a presentation of illustrative water demand analyses performed with the model. The results are not definitive but highlight the power of the method and the importance of an integrated approach to studying water demand and other aspects of industrial resource use

    Formation of two-dimensional weak localization in conducting Langmuir-Blodgett films

    We report the magnetotransport properties up to 7 T in the organic highly conducting Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films formed by a molecular association of the electroactive donor molecule bis(ethylendioxy)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDO-TTF) and stearic acid CH3_3(CH2_2)16_{16}COOH. We show the logarithmic decrease of dc conductivity and the negative transverse magnetoresistance at low temperature. They are interpreted in the weak localization of two-dimensional (2D) electronic system based on the homogeneous conducting layer with the molecular size thickness of BEDO-TTF. The electronic length with phase memory is given at the mesoscopic scale, which provides for the first time evidence of the 2D coherent charge transport in the conducting LB films.Comment: 5 pages, 1 Table and 5 figure

    A Two-dimensional Superconductor in a Tilted Magnetic Field - new states with finite Cooper-pair momentum

    Varying the angle Theta between applied field and the conducting planes of a layered superconductor in a small interval close to the plane-parallel field direction, a large number of superconducting states with unusual properties may be produced. For these states, the pair breaking effect of the magnetic field affects both the orbital and the spin degree of freedom. This leads to pair wave functions with finite momentum, which are labeled by Landau quantum numbers 0<n<\infty. The stable order parameter structure and magnetic field distribution for these states is found by minimizing the quasiclassical free energy near H_{c2} including nonlinear terms. One finds states with coexisting line-like and point-like order parameter zeros and states with coexisting vortices and antivortices. The magnetic response may be diamagnetic or paramagnetic depending on the position within the unit cell. The structure of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states at Theta=0 is reconsidered. The transition n->\infty of the paramagnetic vortex states to the FFLO-limit is analyzed and the physical reason for the occupation of higher Landau levels is pointed out.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figure

    [Extract] The Coral Reef Expert Group (CREG) was one of eight expert groups, which all followed a prescribed process to recommend a design for their thematic component. The tasks of the expert groups included: ‱ Synopsis of the theme, to include discussion on current state, primary drivers, pressures and responses using DPSIR framework. ‱ Review of all current monitoring and modelling activities relevant to the expert group theme. ‱ Identify candidate indicators that can be monitored and would provide information about trend, status or forecasting of value or the system. ‱ Evaluation of the adequacy and confidence of current monitoring and modelling of candidate indicators, determined by their ability to meet the objectives of the RIMReP and management needs provided by the Authority. ‱ Identification and discussion of gaps and opportunities in current monitoring and modelling of such indicators. ‱ Evaluation of new monitoring technologies for their potential to increase efficiency or statistical power and their compatibility with long-term datasets. ‱ Recommendations for monitoring design including consideration of primary indicators, continuity of data sets, how the design addresses management needs, modification to existing programs, costing and transition strategies.An accessible copy of this report is not yet available from this repository, please contact [email protected] for more information

    Physiological quality, content and activity of antioxidants in soybean seeds artificially aged.

    ABSTRACT - The objective of this study was to evaluate physiological quality, content, and activity of antioxidants, in soybean seeds subjected to accelerated aging during different periods. Seeds of cultivars BRS 258, BRS 262 and BRS 268, subjected to accelerated aging during 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours and non-aged seeds were used. After each aging period, the seed were evaluated by tests of: germination; first count and tetrazolium. The total of phenolic compounds, total flavonoides, total of isoflavones, and activity for eliminating ABTS°+ radicals were quantified. There were differences among cultivars according to vigor and viability only after seeds were aged. Cultivars BRS 158 and BRS 268 have shown better seed physiological quality in each aging period; however, not presenting higher amounts of isoflavones and efficiency in removing free radicals. For all cultivars, the values for total of phenolic compounds, as well as total of flavonoids have shown quadratic positive behavior; the values for isoflavones remained constant and the vigor and viability showed contrary trend to activity of antioxidant agents. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade fisiolĂłgica, o conteĂșdo e a atividade de agentes antioxidantes presentes em sementes de soja envelhecidas durante diferentes perĂ­odos. Foram utilizadas sementes das cultivares BRS 258, BRS 262 e BRS 268, envelhecidas durante 12, 24, 36 e 48 h e sementes nĂŁo envelhecidas. ApĂłs cada perĂ­odo de envelhecimento, as sementes foram avaliadas pelo testes de: germinação; primeira contagem e tetrazĂłlio. Foram quantificados: compostos fenĂłlicos totais; flavonĂłides totais; total de isoflavonas e atividade eliminadora do radical ABTS°+. Houve diferença entre as cultivares em relação ao vigor e viabilidade somente quando foram envelhecidas. BRS 158 e BRS 268 apresentaram melhor qualidade fisiolĂłgica de sementes em cada perĂ­odo de envelhecimento, porĂ©m, nĂŁo apresentaram maior quantidade de isoflavonas e eficiĂȘncia no sequestro dos radicais livres. Para todas as cultivares, os valores de compostos fenĂłlicos totais, assim como os flavonĂłides totais, apresentaram comportamento quadrĂĄtico positivo; os valores das isoflavonas permaneceram constantes e o vigor e a viabilidade apresentaram tendĂȘncia contrĂĄria Ă  atividade dos agentes antioxidantes

    Parkinson's disease age at onset genome-wide association study : Defining heritability, genetic loci, and α-synuclein mechanisms

    Background Increasing evidence supports an extensive and complex genetic contribution to PD. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have shed light on the genetic basis of risk for this disease. However, the genetic determinants of PD age at onset are largely unknown. Objectives To identify the genetic determinants of PD age at onset. Methods Using genetic data of 28,568 PD cases, we performed a genome-wide association study based on PD age at onset. Results We estimated that the heritability of PD age at onset attributed to common genetic variation was similar to 0.11, lower than the overall heritability of risk for PD (similar to 0.27), likely, in part, because of the subjective nature of this measure. We found two genome-wide significant association signals, one at SNCA and the other a protein-coding variant in TMEM175, both of which are known PD risk loci and a Bonferroni-corrected significant effect at other known PD risk loci, GBA, INPP5F/BAG3, FAM47E/SCARB2, and MCCC1. Notably, SNCA, TMEM175, SCARB2, BAG3, and GBA have all been shown to be implicated in alpha-synuclein aggregation pathways. Remarkably, other well-established PD risk loci, such as GCH1 and MAPT, did not show a significant effect on age at onset of PD. Conclusions Overall, we have performed the largest age at onset of PD genome-wide association studies to date, and our results show that not all PD risk loci influence age at onset with significant differences between risk alleles for age at onset. This provides a compelling picture, both within the context of functional characterization of disease-linked genetic variability and in defining differences between risk alleles for age at onset, or frank risk for disease.     Cell Specific eQTL Analysis without Sorting Cells

    The functional consequences of trait associated SNPs are often investigated using expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) mapping. While trait-associated variants may operate in a cell-type specific manner, eQTL datasets for such cell-types may not always be available. We performed a genome-environment interaction (GxE) meta-analysis on data from 5,683 samples to infer the cell type specificity of whole blood cis-eQTLs. We demonstrate that this method is able to predict neutrophil and lymphocyte specific cis-eQTLs and replicate these predictions in independent cell-type specific datasets. Finally, we show that SNPs associated with Crohn’s disease preferentially affect gene expression within neutrophils, including the archetypal NOD2 locus
