Objective: To evaluate the results of ART (clinical pregnancies and baby home rates) in couples infected with HBV, HCV, HIV or mixed in a Referral center. Patients: The study is a retrospective case-control study comprising 1587 cycles/1064 couples in the control group and 237 cycles/164 couples in the infected group, submitted to in vitro fertilization, intracytoplasmic sperm injection and embryo transfer. Two branches from the infected group were created: the HIV subgroup, comprising couples with one or both partners infected with HIV-1 (84 cycles/67 couples), and the HCV subgroup, including at least one partner infected with HCV (45 cycles/29 couples). Results: The infected group presented higher infertility duration (P < 0.001) and so did the HCV subgroup (P < 0.001). Tubal infertility was increased in the infected group (P < 0.001), and in the HIV (P < 0.001) and HCV (P = 0.01) subgroups. Oocytes and oocytes in metaphase II numbers were lower in the infected group, but not in the HIV and HCV subgroups. Clinical pregnancy rate was lower in the infected group (25.74%) when compared to the control (34.66%), probably due to the contribution of HCV individuals (17.78%), but not of HIV (28.57%). Baby home rate was lower in the infected group (21.52%) relative to the control group (28.42%), but no differences were found in the HIV (27.38%) and HCV (15.56%) subgroups. Conclusions: Despite the low clinical pregnancy rate in the HCV subgroup, baby home rates did not change from control. These data seem promising for couples with viral infections who wish to conceive.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Design Methodology for Heavy-Lift Unmanned Aerial Vehicles with Coaxial Rotors

    Get PDF
This work presents a novel design methodology for multirotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). To specifically address the design of vehicles with heavy lift capabilities, we have extended existing design methodologies to include coaxial rotor systems which have exhibit the best thrust-to-volume ratio for operation of UAVs in urban environments. Such coaxial systems, however, come with decreased aerodynamic efficiency and the design approach developed in this work can account for this. The proposed design methodology and included market studies have been demonstrated for the development of a multi-parcel delivery drone that can deliver up to four packages using a novel morphing concept. Flight test results in this paper serve to validate the predictions of thrust and battery life of the coaxial propulsion system suggesting errors in predicted flight time of less than 5 percent

Upwelling regime off the Cabo Frio region in Brazil and impact on acoustic propagation

    Get PDF
This work introduces a description of the complex upwelling regime off the Cabo Frio region in Brazil and shows that ocean modeling, based on the feature-oriented regional modeling system (FORMS) technique, can produce reliable predictions of sound speed fields for the corresponding shallow water environment. This work also shows, through the development of simulations, that the upwelling regime can be responsible for the creation of shadow coastal zones, in which the detection probability is too low for an acoustic source to be detected. The development of the FORMS technique and its validation with real data, for the particular region of coastal upwelling off Cabo Frio, reveals the possibility of a sustainable and reliable forecast system for the corresponding (variable in space and time) underwater acoustic environment. Dynamic critical exponents of the Ising model with multispin interactions

We revisit the short-time dynamics of 2D Ising model with three spin interactions in one direction and estimate the critical exponents z,z, θ,\theta, β\beta and ν\nu. Taking properly into account the symmetry of the Hamiltonian we obtain results completely different from those obtained by Wang et al.. For the dynamic exponent zz our result coincides with that of the 4-state Potts model in two dimensions. In addition, results for the static exponents ν\nu and β\beta agree with previous estimates obtained from finite size scaling combined with conformal invariance. Finally, for the new dynamic exponent θ\theta we find a negative and close to zero value, a result also expected for the 4-state Potts model according to Okano et al.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, corrected Abstract mistypes, corrected equation on page 4 (Parameter Q

Colite a CMV Mimetizando Tumor Rectal num Doente com VIH Não Diagnosticado

Introduction: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common opportunistic agent in HIV-infected patients. It can affect the entire gastrointestinal tract, but frequently involves the oesophagus and the colon. Case Report: We report the case of a 70-year-old female, ultimately diagnosed with HIV infection, whose inaugural clinical manifestation was CMV colitis with endoscopic findings resembling a rectal tumour in which initial histological evaluation was not able to provide a proper diagnosis. Discussion/Conclusion: Since clinical presentation is variable and histopathological yield without immunohistochemical analysis is poor, recognizing CMV infection in the absence of known risk factors may be difficult. It is crucial to consider this entity with suspicious lesions or when initial evaluation, either clinical or histopathological, is inconclusive, thus avoiding potentially debilitating and superfluous treatment or life-threatening complications.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

HEI teaching mobility: looking for dynamics in a seven-year period

    Get PDF
Higher Education Institutions are currently embracing mobility as an imperative goal, particularly and most impressively in the European Union countries where programs such as Erasmus+ strongly encourage students and staff to participate. This exploratory research aims to characterize teaching mobility in one university, identify facilitators, determine outcomes of repeated mobility, and provide clues on mobility dynamics over time. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from application forms and final reports submitted by 107 outgoing and 58 incoming teachers in one university between 2009 and 2016. It was observed that teaching mobility covers diversified profiles (e.g., gender, seniority, and fields of study). 23 out of 71 outgoing teachers participated in more than one mobility program during that period. A deeper analysis on the mobility champions reveals both individual and team initiatives. The results provide some interesting data on facilitators and consequences of teaching mobility.publishe
