Genomic history of coastal societies from eastern South America

Sambaqui (shellmound) societies are among the most intriguing archaeological phenomena in pre-colonial South America, extending from approximately 8,000 to 1,000 years before present (yr bp) across 3,000 km on the Atlantic coast. However, little is known about their connection to early Holocene hunter-gatherers, how this may have contributed to different historical pathways and the processes through which late Holocene ceramists came to rule the coast shortly before European contact. To contribute to our understanding of the population history of indigenous societies on the eastern coast of South America, we produced genome-wide data from 34 ancient individuals as early as 10,000 yr bp from four different regions in Brazil. Early Holocene hunter-gatherers were found to lack shared genetic drift among themselves and with later populations from eastern South America, suggesting that they derived from a common radiation and did not contribute substantially to later coastal groups. Our analyses show genetic heterogeneity among contemporaneous Sambaqui groups from the southeastern and southern Brazilian coast, contrary to the similarity expressed in the archaeological record. The complex history of intercultural contact between inland horticulturists and coastal populations becomes genetically evident during the final horizon of Sambaqui societies, from around 2,200 yr bp, corroborating evidence of cultural change

Multiple Myeloma Treatment Guidelines by the Portuguese Group of Multiple Myeloma

The treatment of multiple myeloma has profoundly changed with the introduction of several innovative therapies. The optimization of therapeutic sequencing through the combined use of the various drugs developed in recent years and the attention given to the characteristics of patients have allowed the reduction of toxicities and increased survival and quality of life of patients with multiple myeloma. These treatment recommendations from the Portuguese Multiple Myeloma Group offer guidance for first-line treatment and progression/relapse situations. These recommendations are given highlighting the data that justify each choice and referring to the respective levels of evidence that support these options. Whenever possible, the respective national regulatory framework is presented. These recommendations constitute an advance towards the best treatment of multiple myeloma in Portugal.publishersversionpublishe

COP16, metas voluntárias e reforma do Código Florestal: o desmatamento no Brasil e a mitigação da mudança global do clima

Assim como outros países, o Brasil assumiu na 15ª Conferência das Partes, em Copenhague(2009), compromissos voluntários de controle das emissões de gases de efeito estufa, oficializados na COP16, em Cancun (2010). Paralelamente, ganham vigor propostas de reformar o Código Florestal brasileiro, as quais legitimam desmatamentos passados e flexibilizam as regras para desmatamentos futuros. A adoção das alterações propostas para o Código Florestal brasileiro dificultam o cumprimento dos compromissos voluntários assumidos pelo Brasil perante as demais nações, no âmbito do regime internacional sobre mudança global do clima.Carlos Rubens Henrique Tomé Silv

Formação do regime internacional de mudança global do clima pós-2012 : o diálogo Globe G8+5 sobre mudança do clima e a posição oficial brasileira

A extensão, a gravidade e a urgência do fenômeno estão a demandar da comunidade internacional solução imediata e eficaz. O Brasil tem participado ativamente das negociações do regime internacional sobre o tema, em várias esferas. Uma delas é o Diálogo G8+5 sobre Mudança do Clima, promovido pela Globe International. Entre 2006 e 2008, a entidade realizou cinco Fóruns de Legisladores, que produziram relatórios e recomendações políticas aos líderes do G8. O propósito desta monografia é comparar as conclusões desses trabalhos com a posição oficial defendida pelo Brasil nas negociações formais nas Nações Unidas. A hipótese que procuramos confirmar é a de que esses dois parâmetros convergem em seus aspectos fundamentais
