    Alteration and alterability of the anorthosite from Angola

    Siliceous rocks are widely used as dimension stone but the last decades have registered an increase rate of their alteration when exposed to polluted environments. Anorthosites were treated by acidified solutions of HCl, HN03 and H2S04 simulating acid rain and the response was recorded through different experiments such as on the surface of the polished rock and on the surface of uncovered thin sections. The main components, plagioclase and olivine, both responded in similar ways to each acid solution, although following different trends; while plagioclase develops a thin layer which acts as protection to the mineral, olivine at first undergoes alteration due to leaching of magnesium and iron and in a following stage, is mechanically removed from the rock. The action of warm water on the rock was tested through the use of the Soxhlet extractor which caused changes on the rock colour and leaching of several cations from its components

    Sound and complete axiomatizations of coalgebraic language equivalence

    Coalgebras provide a uniform framework to study dynamical systems, including several types of automata. In this paper, we make use of the coalgebraic view on systems to investigate, in a uniform way, under which conditions calculi that are sound and complete with respect to behavioral equivalence can be extended to a coarser coalgebraic language equivalence, which arises from a generalised powerset construction that determinises coalgebras. We show that soundness and completeness are established by proving that expressions modulo axioms of a calculus form the rational fixpoint of the given type functor. Our main result is that the rational fixpoint of the functor FTFT, where TT is a monad describing the branching of the systems (e.g. non-determinism, weights, probability etc.), has as a quotient the rational fixpoint of the "determinised" type functor Fˉ\bar F, a lifting of FF to the category of TT-algebras. We apply our framework to the concrete example of weighted automata, for which we present a new sound and complete calculus for weighted language equivalence. As a special case, we obtain non-deterministic automata, where we recover Rabinovich's sound and complete calculus for language equivalence.Comment: Corrected version of published journal articl

    Heavy-ion Physics at a Fixed-Target Experiment Using the LHC Proton and Lead Beams (AFTER@LHC): Feasibility Studies for Quarkonium and Drell-Yan Production

    We outline the case for heavy-ion-physics studies using the multi-TeV lead LHC beams in the fixed-target mode. After a brief contextual reminder, we detail the possible contributions of AFTER@LHC to heavy-ion physics with a specific emphasis on quarkonia. We then present performance simulations for a selection of observables. These show that Υ(nS)\Upsilon(nS), J/ψJ/\psi and ψ(2S)\psi(2S) production in heavy-ion collisions can be studied in new energy and rapidity domains with the LHCb and ALICE detectors. We also discuss the relevance to analyse the Drell-Yan pair production in asymmetric nucleus-nucleus collisions to study the factorisation of the nuclear modification of partonic densities and of further quarkonia to restore their status of golden probes of the quark-gluon plasma formation.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

    The ODU/SLAC superconducting rf-dipole cavity is under consideration for the crab-crossing system in the upcoming LHC luminosity upgrade. While the proposed cavity complies well within the rf-parameters and multipolar component restrictions for the LHC system, cavity imperfections arising from cavity fabrication, welding and frequency tuning may have a significant effect in these parameters.     Cooperation enhanced by inhomogeneous activity of teaching for evolutionary Prisoner's Dilemma games

    Evolutionary Prisoner's Dilemma games with quenched inhomogeneities in the spatial dynamical rules are considered. The players following one of the two pure strategies (cooperation or defection) are distributed on a two-dimensional lattice. The rate of strategy adoption from a randomly chosen neighbors are controlled by the payoff difference and a two-value pre-factor ww characterizing the players whom the strategy learned from. The reduced teaching activity of players is distributed randomly with concentrations ν\nu at the beginning and fixed further on. Numerical and analytical calculations are performed to study the concentration of cooperators as a function of ww and ν\nu for different noise levels and connectivity structures. Significant increase of cooperation is found within a wide range of parameters for this dynamics. The results highlight the importance of asymmetry characterizing the exchange of master-follower role during the strategy adoptions.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, corrected typo

    In this paper, a modified Chaplygin gas model of unifying dark energy and dark matter with exotic equation of state p=BρAραp=B\rho-\frac{A}{\rho^{\alpha}} which can also explain the recent accelerated expansion of the universe is investigated by the means of constraining the location of the peak of the CMBR spectrum. We find that the result of CMBR measurements does not exclude the nonzero value of parameter BB, but allows it in the range 0.35B0.025-0.35\lesssim B\lesssim0.025.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Cannabinoid receptors in the inflammatory cells of canine atopic dermatitis

    Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of the most common cutaneous inflammatory and pruritic diseases in dogs. Considering its multifactorial nature, AD can be a challenging disease to manage, and the therapeutic strategy must often be multimodal. In recent years, research has been moving toward the use of natural products which have beneficial effects on inflammation and itching, and no side effects. Cannabinoid receptors have been demonstrated to be expressed in healthy and diseased skin; therefore, one of the potential alternative therapeutic targets for investigating AD is the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Objective: To immunohistochemically investigate the expression of the cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2R), and the cannabinoid-related receptors G protein-coupled receptor 55 (GPR55), transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) and ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) in mast cells (MCs), macrophages, dendritic cells (DCs), T cells, and neutrophils of the skin of dogs with AD. Animals: Samples of skin tissues were collected from eight dogs with AD (AD-dogs). Materials and methods: The immunofluorescent stained cryosections of the skins of 8 dogs with AD having antibodies against CB2R, GPR55, TRPV1, TRPA1 were semiquantitatively evaluated. The inflammatory cells were identified using antibodies against tryptase (mast cells), ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1 (IBA1) (macrophages/DCs), CD3 (T cells), and calprotectin (neutrophils). The proportions of MCs, macrophages/DCs, T cells, and neutrophils expressing CB2R, GPR55, TRPV1 and TRPA1 were evaluated. Results: The cells of the inflammatory infiltrate showed immunoreactivity (IR) for all or for some of the cannabinoid and cannabinoid-related receptors studied. In particular, MCs and macrophages/DCs showed CB2R-, GPR55-, TRPA1-, and TRPV1-IR; T cells showed CB2R-, GPR55- and TRPA1-IR, and neutrophils expressed GPR55-IR. Co-localization studies indicated that CB2R-IR was co-expressed with TRPV1-, TRPA1-, and GPR55-IR in different cellular elements of the dermis of the AD-dogs. Conclusions and clinical importance: Cannabinoid receptor 2, and cannabinoid-related receptors GPR55, TRPV1 and TRPA1 were widely expressed in the inflammatory infiltrate of the AD-dogs. Based on the present findings, the ECS could be considered to be a potential therapeutic target for dogs with AD, and may mitigate itch and inflammation

    Promotores hormonais de crescimento de plantas (PHCP) têm sido utilizados na agricultura, especialmente cinetina (KIN, citocinina), ácido giberélico (GA3, giberelina), e ácido indolbutírico (IBA, auxina). O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar doses e métodos de aplicação de um produto contendo PHCP (0,09 g L-1 de KIN; 0,05 g L-1 de GA3; 0,05 g L-1 de IBA) e os seus efeitos no crescimento de plântulas de trigo. Dois experimentos independentes foram conduzidos em casa de vegetação. O primeiro foi desenvolvido em papel Germitest® e o segundo em solo. Em ambos os casos, foram utilizados delineamentos inteiramente casualizados. O primeiro ensaio, com 10 repetições, foi conduzido em arranjo fatorial 2 × 2 × 4, sendo dois genótipos de trigo, duas doses de PHCP aplicadas nas sementes, e quatro períodos de crescimento das plântulas, totalizando 160 unidades experimentais. O segundo ensaio continha quatro repetições, com tratamentos dispostos no arranjo fatorial 2 × 2 × 2, sendo dois genótipos de trigo, duas doses de PHCP aplicadas nas sementes, e duas doses de PHCP aplicadas nas folhas, totalizando 32 unidades experimentais. Foram avaliados os crescimentos radicular (número de raízes/plântula e comprimento total/plântula) e foliar (comprimento, largura e área). A aplicação do PHCP nas sementes atrasou o crescimento inicial das raízes e a expansão da área foliar. Porém, este efeito inibitório foi revertido com o avanço da idade das plântulas. A aplicação combinada de PHCP nas sementes e nas folhas ocasionou um efeito antagônico, com sistemática redução do crescimento de raízes das plântulas trigo

    Dynamics and hysteresis in square lattice artificial spin-ice

    Dynamical effects under geometrical frustration are considered in a model for artificial spin ice on a square lattice in two dimensions. Each island of the spin ice has a three-component Heisenberg-like dipole moment subject to shape anisotropies that influence its direction. The model has real dynamics, including rotation of the magnetic degrees of freedom, going beyond the Ising-type models of spin ice. The dynamics is studied using a Langevin equation solved via a second order Heun algorithm. Thermodynamic properties such as the specific heat are presented for different couplings. A peak in specific heat is related to a type of melting-like phase transition present in the model. Hysteresis in an applied magnetic field is calculated for model parameters where the system is able to reach thermodynamic equilibrium.Comment: Revised versio
