Tunable Magnonic Thermal Hall Effect in Skyrmion Crystal Phases of Ferrimagnets
We theoretically study the thermal Hall effect by magnons in skyrmion crystal
phases of ferrimagnets in the vicinity of the angular momentum compensation
point (CP). To this end, we start by deriving the equation of motion for
magnons in the background of an arbitrary equilibrium spin texture, which gives
rise to the fictitious electromagnetic field for magnons. As the net spin
density varies, the resultant equation of motion interpolates between the
relativistic Klein-Gordon equation at CP and the nonrelativistic
Schr{\"o}dinger-like equation away from it. In skyrmion crystal phases, the
right- and the left-circularly polarized magnons with respect to the order
parameter are shown to form the Landau levels separately within the uniform
skyrmion-density approximation. For an experimental proposal, we predict that
the magnonic thermal Hall conductivity changes its sign when the ferrimagnet is
tuned across CP, providing a way to control heat flux in spin-caloritronic
devices on the one hand and a feasible way to detect CP of ferrimagnets on the
other hand.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 pages of supplemental materia

Factors Affecting the Work-life Balance of Flight Instructors
In recent years, work-life balance has become a key area of concern for employees and organizations all over the world. Employees’ work-life balance has a direct impact on their quality of life, work, and personal well-being. While many researchers have conducted studies investigating the factors affecting work-life balance for various group of employees—e.g., remote workers, female bank employees, corporate managers, physicians and clinicians, etc., work-life balance for flight instructors has never been studied. Flight instructors provide critical service for the aviation industry by teaching students how to fly aircrafts through classroom, simulator, and live flight instruction. They are required to have a pilot\u27s license and instructor certification. Although flight instructors usually do not fly more than eight hours a day, their work schedules can be irregular and unpredictable. They may also be required to work during weekends and evening hours. Naturally, balancing work and family responsibilities is not easy for flight instructors. This research will investigate the factors affecting work-life balance for flight instructors. Data will be collected using an online questionnaire and respondents will be selected through convenience sampling. Data analysis will be carried out by using confirmatory factor analysis. This work-in-progress poster contributes to the aviation industry by providing valuable insight into how flight instructors perceive the quality of their work-life balance. Results of this paper should benefit readers better understand many critical aspects of flight instructors’ duties and responsibilities. Results should also help increasing flight instructors’ productivity, well-being, and engagement, and reducing their stress and absenteeism
Real Estate Prices in Beijing, 1644 to 1840
This paper provides the first estimates of housing price movements for Beijing in late pre-modern China. We hand-collect from archival sources transaction prices and other house attribute information from the 498 surviving house sale contracts for Beijing during the first two centuries of the Qing Dynasty (1644–1840), a long period without major wars, political turmoil, or significant institutional change in the Chinese capital. We use hedonic methods to construct a real estate price index for Beijing for the period. The regression analysis explains a major proportion of the variance of housing prices. We find that house prices grew steadily for the first half-century of the Qing Dynasty and declined afterwards in both nominal and real terms through the late eighteenth century. Nominal prices grew starting in the late eighteenth century and declined from the early nineteenth century through 1840. But these price changes occurred with contemporaneous price changes in basic measures of the cost of living: there was little change in real terms to the end of our period
Securing industrial control system environments: the missing piece
Cyberattacks on industrial control systems (ICSs) are no longer matters of anticipation. These systems are continually subject to malicious attacks without much resistance. Network breaches, data theft, denial of service, and command and control functions are examples of common attacks on ICSs. Despite available security solutions, safety, security, resilience, and performance require both private public sectors to step-up strategies to address increasing security concerns on ICSs. This paper reviews the ICS security risk landscape, including current security solution strategies in order to determine the gaps and limitations for effective mitigation. Notable issues point to a greater emphasis on technology security while discounting people and processes attributes. This is clearly incongruent with; emerging security risk trends, the biased security strategy of focusing more on supervisory control and data acquisition systems, and the emergence of more sector-specific solutions as against generic security solutions. Better solutions need to include approaches that follow similar patterns as the problem trend. These include security measures that are evolutionary by design in response to security risk dynamics. Solutions that recognize and include; people, process and technology security enhancement into asingle system, and addressing all three-entity vulnerabilities can provide a better solution for ICS environments
Magnonic topological insulators in antiferromagnets
Extending the notion of symmetry protected topological phases to insulating antiferromagnets (AFs) described in terms of opposite magnetic dipole moments associated with the magnetic Neel order, we establish a bosonic counterpart of topological insulators in semiconductors. Making use of the Aharonov-Casher effect, induced by electric field gradients, we propose a magnonic analog of the quantum spin Hall effect (magnonic QSHE) for edge states that carry helical magnons. We show that such up and down magnons form the same Landau levels and perform cyclotron motion with the same frequency but propagate in opposite direction. The insulating AF becomes characterized by a topological Z(2) number consisting of the Chern integer associated with each helical magnon edge state. Focusing on the topological Hall phase for magnons, we study bulk magnon effects such as magnonic spin, thermal, Nernst, and Ettinghausen effects, as well as the thermomagnetic properties of helical magnon transport both in topologically trivial and nontrivial bulk AFs and establish the magnonic Wiedemann-Franz law. We show that our predictions are within experimental reach with current device and measurement techniques

Asymmetric triplex metallohelices with high and selective activity against cancer cells
Small cationic amphiphilic α-helical peptides are emerging as agents for the treatment of cancer and infection, but they are costly and display unfavourable pharmacokinetics. Helical coordination complexes may offer a three-dimensional scaffold for the synthesis of mimetic architectures. However, the high symmetry and modest functionality of current systems offer little scope to tailor the structure to interact with specific biomolecular targets, or to create libraries for phenotypic screens. Here, we report the highly stereoselective asymmetric self-assembly of very stable, functionalized metallohelices. Their anti-parallel head-to-head-to-tail ‘triplex’ strand arrangement creates an amphipathic functional topology akin to that of the active sub-units of, for example, host-defence peptides and p53. The metallohelices display high, structure-dependent toxicity to the human colon carcinoma cell-line HCT116 p53++, causing dramatic changes in the cell cycle without DNA damage. They have lower toxicity to human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MDA-MB-468) and, most remarkably, they show no significant toxicity to the bacteria methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
