The effects of herring-roe lyophilized powder on lipid metabolism

AbstractHerring-roe, which contains large amounts of docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, has anti-dyslipidemia effects. Here, we evaluated the effects of herring-roe on lipid metabolism in 33 adult subjects in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. We divided the subjects into a test group that ingested herring-roe lyophilized powder (herring-roe powder) and a placebo group that ingested non-herring-roe powder, with each member of each group ingesting 15 g daily for 8 weeks. Hematological tests and body composition measurements were performed before and after 4, 6, and 8 weeks of the study period. Although no significant differences in low density lipoprotein were observed, high density lipoprotein was found to be increased in subjects who ingested herring-roe powder. In addition, the level of free fatty acid was significantly improved in the herring-roe powder group. These results suggest that ingestion of herring-roe could influence lipid metabolism

China's economic growth and notable increase in the export of capital to Brazil have given rise to academic works on the particularities of Chinese strategies in the country. More than explain the political reasons and economic synergies that made it possible, this paper aims to focus on the diplomatic-legal strategies that support Chinese investment in Brazil. The specific objective is to understand the relation between the commitments in the bilateral agreements signed by the countries and the goals of the Chinese State in its own state planning documents. To do so, the paper is structured from a qualitative analysis of the regulatory instruments at the bilateral level and at the domestic level in China and their provisions regarding renewable energy, between 2010 and 2020. The methodology used includes the use of the Atlas.ti© Software to identify the main phrases from the documents, to systematize eventual patterns of context, content and format of these regulatory instruments. The result of the analysis contributes to the specialized literature by shedding light on the importance of Brazilian public and private players, to be aware of Chinese national plans and strategies to better understand the basis and regulation of this investment in Brazil.

Enhancing Overland Flow Infiltration through Sustainable Well-Managed Thinning: Contour-Aligned Felled Log Placement in a Chamaecyparis obtusa Plantation

Contour felling is a restoration method used to decrease overland flow (OF) and soil erosion in the world. However, the impact of thinning and the placement of felled logs on OF remains inconclusive. Low ground cover and soil permeability promote OF in Chamaecyparis obtusa (Siebold et Zucc.) Endl plantations, making thinning a method for reducing runoff. We examined the relationship between OF and ground cover in a C. obtusa plantation in Japan. Event-based runoff was monitored in three plots from 2016 to 2021, with 40% thinning conducted in 2019. In plot T1, logs were randomly scattered, and, in T2, logs followed contour lines, while control plots stayed the same. After thinning, both treatment plots showed lower OF than the control plot. The ANCOVA test shows a significant slope reduction in treatment plots compared to the control plot from pre-thinning to post-thinning (T1: 0.67 to 0.26, T2: 0.66 to 0.12, p < 0.001, Tukey HSD test). However, in plot T2, OF remained stable for two years post-thinning, affirming the enduring effectiveness of contour-aligned log placement. This study backs the notion that aligning fallen logs with contour lines boosts long-term OF infiltration, supporting sustainable forest and soil management

Predicting the course of hematopoietic neoplasm through oral bacterial examination

Many medical institutions have recently conducted studies on the relationship between patients with hematopoietic neoplasms and oral cavity. Statistical analysis of the bacterial populations was performed in this study to identify how oral microflora and health conditions (e.g., dental caries and periodontal diseases) affect the prognosis of patients with hematopoietic neoplasms. Patients undergoing inpatient treatment from January to December 2020 at the Department of Hematology at Showa University, Japan, who required perioperative oral management were included in the study. The oral health of the patients was examined at the initial dental visit, and oral bacterial samples were collected from the tongue, buccal mucosa, and palate of 47 patients who consented to participate after receiving an explanation about the study. Statistical analyses performed after dividing the subjects into two groups following the treatment course showed that Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Gemella sanguinis were significantly more common in the poor-course group. However, no significant difference in bacterial examination results was noted among the four groups (myeloid neoplasm chemotherapy, myeloid neoplasm hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), lymphoid neoplasm chemotherapy, and lymphoid neoplasm HSCT groups) classified based on disease and treatment method. The detection rate of bacteria potentially causing infectious diseases at the initial dental examination tended to be higher in this study in the poor-course group. The findings of the current study suggest that early detection of pathogenic bacteria after commencing hematology treatment could predict the poor-course that may lead to mortality or severe infections
