    Nanovectors Design for Theranostic Applications in Colorectal Cancer

    Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a diffused disease with limited therapeutic options, none of which are often curative. Based on the molecular markers and targets expressed by the affected tissues, numerous novel approaches have been developed to study and treat this disease. In particular, the field of nanotechnology offers an astonishingly wide array of innovative nanovectors with high versatility and adaptability for both diagnosis and therapy (the so called \u201ctheranostic platforms\u201d). However, such complexity can make the selection of a specific nanocarrier model to study a perplexing endeavour for the biomedical scientist or clinician not familiar with this field of inquiry. This review offers a comprehensive overview of this wide body of knowledge, in order to outline the essential requirements for the clinical viability evaluation of a nanovector model in CRC. In particular, the differences among the foremost designs, their specific advantages, and technological caveats will be treated, never forgetting the ultimate endpoint for these systems development: the clinical practice

    Mathematics anxiety, working memory, and mathematics performance in secondary-school children

    Mathematics anxiety (MA) has been defined as \u201ca feeling of tension and anxiety that interferes with the manipulation of numbers and the solving of math problems in a wide variety of ordinary life and academic situations\u201d. Previous studies have suggested that a notable proportion of children in primary and secondary school suffer from MA, which is negatively correlated with calculation skills. The processing efficiency and attentional control theories suggest that working memory (WM) also plays an important part in such anxious feelings. The present study aimed to analyze the academic achievement and cognitive profiles of students with high math anxiety (HMA) and low math anxiety (LMA). Specifically, 32 students with HMA and 34 with LMA matched for age, gender, generalized anxiety, and vocabulary attending sixth to eighth grades were selected from a larger sample. The two groups were tested on reading decoding, reading comprehension, mathematics achievement, and on verbal short-term memory and WM. Our findings showed that HMA students were weak in several measures of mathematics achievement, but not in reading and writing skills, and that students with HMA reported lower scores on short-term memory and WM performances (with associated difficulties in inhibiting irrelevant information) than children with LMA. In addition, a logistic regression showed that weaknesses in inhibitory control and fact retrieval were the strongest variables for classifying children as having HMA or LMA

    Telerehabilitation for neurological motor impairment: a systematic review and meta-analysis on quality of life, satisfaction, and acceptance in stroke, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease

    Telerehabilitation (TR) seems to be a viable and feasible solution to face the rehabilitative challenges posed by neurological impairments and to improve patients’ quality of life (QoL). This review aims to synthesize and analyze the evidence on the impact of physiotherapy intervention through TR on QoL in patients with stroke, Parkinson’s disease (PD), and multiple sclerosis (MS), together with an evaluation of their satisfaction and technology acceptance levels. Through a systematic search of the literature and a screening process, treatment effects were assessed with meta-analyses using the standardized mean difference, setting the confidence interval at 95%. We included 28 studies in the review, which were analyzed for methodological quality, whereas 16 studies were included in the meta-analyses. The results suggest a significant improvement in QoL in patients who underwent TR. We were unable to perform analyses for satisfaction and technology acceptance outcomes due to insufficient data. Overall, motor TR has a positive impact on the QoL of patients with neurological diseases, especially in stroke patients; although caution is needed in the interpretation of the results due to the high heterogeneity found. For PD and MS, TR seems to yield comparable results to in-person treatment

    Microbe-assisted seedling crop improvement by a seaweed extract to address fucalean forest restoration

    In the Mediterranean, Cystoseira sensu lato (s.l.) (Phaeophyceae) forests have sharply declined and restoration measures are needed to compensate for the loss. Assisted regeneration through the outplanting of seedlings grown ex-situ has proven to be a sustainable option. Optimizing mesocosm culture can maximize survival of the most critical embryonic stages and reduce long-term maintenance costs. Host-microbiome interactions could also play a crucial role in seedling development and welfare. In this context, we aimed to advance a cultivation protocol that stimulates the growth and fitness of Ericaria amentacea (Phaeophyceae) seedlings and identify the associated microbial biofilm communities. Seedlings were cultured in 6 treatments [i.e., filtered seawater (SW, C, Control), von Stoch-enriched SW (VS), VS + algal extract (VSA), algal extract-enriched SW: A1< A2< A3]. After the field, A2 seedlings had the highest cover (1372 ± 53.66 mm2), which was 1.8 and 1.9 times greater than in VS and VSA, respectively. The addition of the algal extract and nutrients significantly affected the structure and composition of the microbial community that shifted over time in each culture medium. We identified a treatment-specific microbial fingerprint. After the mesocosm phase, A2 was characterized by 4 unique taxa: Postechiella, Winogradskyella, Roseovarius and Arenibacter (Bacteria). Given the success of A2 seedlings, we propose the probiotic consortia candidates characterized by the unique treatment-taxa in conjunction with the shared taxon Psychroserpens (Bacteria, present in A1, A2, VSA, VS) and the reminder community. Within the holobiont concept, the effect of algal extract or nutrients on the algae and/or biofilm could have important consequences for tuning the overall interaction networks. Our study has shown that macroalgal restoration could benefit from both the use of commercial algal extract and tailored nutrient enrichment in ex-situ cultures and the identification of probiotic consortia candidates that promote seedling growth

    Evidence of noncovalent complexes in some natural extracts: Ceylon tea and mate extracts

    AbstractConsidering the high complexity of natural extracts, because of the presence of organic molecules of different chemical nature, the possibility of formation of noncovalent complexes should be taken into account. In a previous investigation, the formation of bimolecular complexes between caffeine and catechins in green tea extracts (GTE) has been experimentally proven by means of mass spectrometric and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. The same approaches have been employed in the present study to evaluate the presence of bimolecular complexes in Ceylon tea and mate extracts. The obtained results show that in the case of Ceylon tea extracts, protonated theaflavin is detectable, together with theaflavin/caffein complexes, while caffeine/catechin complexes, already detected in green tea, are still present but at lower concentration. This aspect is evidenced by the comparison of precursor ion scans performed on protonated caffeine for the two extracts. The spectra obtained in these conditions for GTE and Ceylon tea show that the complexes of caffeine with epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), highy abundant in the case of GTE (signal‐to‐chemical noise ratio in the range 50‐100), are negligible (signal‐to‐chemical noise ratio in the range 2‐3) in the case of Ceylon tea. Mate extracts show the formation of bimolecular complexes involving caffeine but not catechins, and chlorogenic acid becomes responsible for other complex formation. Under positive ion and negative ion conditions, accurate mass measurements allow the identification of malealdehyde, chlorogenic acid, caffeine, two isomers of dicaffeoylquinic acid, rutin, and kaempferol‐3‐O‐rutinoside. These data indicate that the formation of complexes in natural extracts is a common behavior, and their presence must be considered in the description of natural extracts and, consequently, in their biological activity

    Decision support system for emergency management of oil spill accidents in the Mediterranean Sea

    This paper presents an innovative web-based decision support system to facilitate emergency management in the case of oil spill accidents, called WITOIL (Where Is The Oil). The system can be applied to create a forecast of oil spill events, evaluate uncertainty of the predictions, and calculate hazards based on historical meteo-oceanographic datasets. To compute the oil transport and transformation, WITOIL uses the MEDSLIK-II oil spill model forced by operational meteo-oceanographic services. Results of the modeling are visualized through Google Maps. A special application for Android is designed to provide mobile access for competent authorities, technical and scientific institutions, and citizens

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Previous work on the direct Speed–Intensity Association (SIA) on comparative judgment tasks involved spatially distributed responses over spatially distributed stimuli with high motivational significance like facial expressions of emotions. This raises the possibility that the inferred stimulus-driven regulation of lateralized motor reactivity described by SIA, which was against the one expected on the basis of a valence-specific lateral bias, was entirely due to attentional capture from motivational significance (beyond numerical cognition). In order to establish the relevance of numerical cognition on the regulation of attentional capture we ran two complementary experiments. These involved the same direct comparison task on stimulus pairs that were fully comparable in terms of their analog representation of intensity but with different representational domain and motivational significance: symbolic magnitudes with low motivational significance in experiment 1 vs. emotions with rather high motivational significance in experiment 2. The results reveal a general SIA and point to a general mechanism regulating comparative judgments. This is based on the way spatial attention is captured toward locations that contain the stimulus which is closest in term of relative intensity to the extremal values of the series, regardless from its representational domain being it symbolic or emotiona
