The world has undergone a change. Al! countries as well as various areas have experienced enormous changes. The results of the Iast census in Brasil have been published and its content points to the enormous efforts that will be required from social scientists to reinterprete this country's pace in the world. The difficulty that 1 am facing today is the same, but in the opposite sense. For, if 1 intend to make a discourse, not only on Latín America, but on the world, 1 do it starting from Latín America. Indeed, al! theorizations about the world are - in the end- speculations with a geographic reference point.

Today, one can't talk merely of technical milieu but of technico-scientific milieu. The use of nature and its resulting transformations are increasingly dependent upon knowledge ; and space itself is loaded with science and technology. Along with universalization and unification of techniques, labour and capital, space itself becomes global and each fraction of it is internationalized. Peripheral regions are incorporated ; subspaces attain economical specialization ; new regional complementarities appear; circulation and information are major data. Migrations get more massive and urbanization gets more concentrated. National territory is unified through the development of transport and communications; but still there is desarticulation at the decision level. The State, financial sector and big firms assume most of the new regulations but the role of « invisible classes » in structuring society and space is increasing

A big data approach to explore medical imaging repositories based on DICOM

    Get PDF
Medical imaging repositories based on the DICOM format such as Picture Archiving and Communication Systems have a huge potential from a big data perspective. The study reported by this paper aimed to verify on how the big data lifecycle processes, from production to consumption might be implemented to take advantage of the DICOM standard and respective data sources. After identifying the different processes (i.e., data collection, integration, filtering, anonymization and enrichment, and knowledge extraction) the study demonstrate their implementation using an open-source application able to access the DICOM metadata independently of the medical imaging modalities and equipment manufacturers.publishe

Cultural Astronomy: A possibility for teacher training

This presentation reports on part of a study carried out aiming to search for the contribution of the research in Cultural Astronomy to the teacher training. First, we sought to establish an overview of the existing literature in Cultural Astronomy, in order to answer the following question: how is the subject Cultural Astronomy being addressed in the scientific publications on Astronomy Education? We offer a review of the publications in journals, symposia and the BTD (Thesis and dissertations repository) of CAPES - Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel in Brazil. BTD is a platform designed to access theses, dissertations and other scientific outcomes in Brazil. It is part of the journal’s portal of the Institution. We selected papers from Brazilian authors as well as from the international community. Afterwards we filtered the database to papers that addressed the training of science teachers. We identified papers related to indigenous and Afro-Brazilian cultures, Incan, Mayan, African and Asian cultures, amongst others. The data were analyzed according to Bardin’s content analysis. The papers were classified in dissertations and theses. Then we went through a filter according to the year of publication, author, researchers’ advisors, name of the graduate program, title of the work, higher education institution, geographical region and state, keywords, cited bibliographic references, theoretical foundations, most cited researchers, data collection technique, methodological analysis, thematic focus and specific contents of Cultural Astronomy. This survey shows that research in Cultural Astronomy is still in its initial steps; only a Few authors are active in this area relative to the growing output in the teaching of astronomy in general, especially in Brazil. We can thus say that it is relevant to include elements of the study of astronomy by Indigenous, Afro-Brazilian, and other cultures in the curriculum of teacher training because this cultural wealth has a lot to offer us in terms of intercultural relations and the study of the universe as done in these various cultures

    Opaque perfect lenses

The response of the ``perfect lens'', consisting of a slab of lossless material of thickness dd with ϵ=μ=−1\epsilon=\mu=-1 at one frequency ω0\omega_0 is investigated. It is shown that as time progresses the lens becomes increasingly opaque to any physical TM line dipole source located a distance d0<d/2d_0<d/2 from the lens and which has been turned on at time t=0t=0. Here a physical source is defined as one which supplies a bounded amount of energy per unit time. In fact the lens cloaks the source so that it is not visible from behind the lens either. For sources which are turned on exponentially slowly there is an exact correspondence between the response of the perfect lens in the long time constant limit and the response of lossy lenses in the low loss limit. Contrary to the usual picture where the field intensity has a minimum at the front interface we find that the field diverges to infinity there in the long time constant limit.Comment: The 7th International Conference on the Electrical transport and Optical Properties of Inhomogenous Media (ETOPIM7
