Sympathetic cooling of trapped fermions by bosons in the presence of particle losses
We study the sympathetic cooling of a trapped Fermi gas interacting with an
ideal Bose gas below the critical temperature of the Bose-Einstein
condensation. We derive the quantum master equation, which describes the
dynamics of the fermionic component, and postulating the thermal distribution
for both gases we calculate analytically the rate at which fermions are cooled
by the bosonic atoms. The particle losses constitute an important source of
heating of the degenerate Fermi gas. We evaluate the rate of loss-induced
heating and derive analytical results for the final temperature of fermions,

Braneworld inflation from an effective field theory after WMAP three-year data
In light of the results from the WMAP three-year sky survey, we study an
inflationary model based on a single-field polynomial potential, with up to
quartic terms in the inflaton field. Our analysis is performed in the context
of the Randall-Sundrum II braneworld theory, and we consider both the
high-energy and low-energy (i.e. the standard cosmology case) limits of the
theory. We examine the parameter space of the model, which leads to both
large-field and small-field inflationary type solutions. We conclude that small
field inflation, for a potential with a negative mass square term, is in
general favored by current bounds on the tensor-to-scalar perturbation ratio

Antiresonance and interaction-induced localization in spin and qubit chains with defects
We study a spin chain with an anisotropic XXZ coupling in an external field.
Such a chain models several proposed types of a quantum computer. The chain
contains a defect with a different on-site energy. The interaction between
excitations is shown to lead to two-excitation states localized next to the
defect. In a resonant situation scattering of excitations on each other might
cause decay of an excitation localized on the defect. We find that destructive
quantum interference suppresses this decay. Numerical results confirm the

Further constraints on the optical transmission spectrum of HAT-P-1b
We report on novel observations of HAT-P-1 aimed at constraining the optical
transmission spectrum of the atmosphere of its transiting Hot-Jupiter
exoplanet. Ground-based differential spectrophotometry was performed over two
transit windows using the DOLORES spectrograph at the Telescopio Nazionale
Galileo (TNG). Our measurements imply an average planet to star radius ratio
equal to =(0.11590.0005). This result is consistent
with the value obtained from recent near infrared measurements of this object
but differs from previously reported optical measurements being lower by around
4.4 exoplanet scale heights. Analyzing the data over 5 different spectral bins
600\AA wide we observed a single peaked spectrum (3.7 level)
with a blue cut-off corresponding to the blue edge of the broad absorption wing
of sodium and an increased absorption in the region in between 6180-7400\AA. We
also infer that the width of the broad absorption wings due to alkali metals is
likely narrower than the one implied by solar abundance clear atmospheric
models. We interpret the result as evidence that HAT-P-1b has a partially clear
atmosphere at optical wavelengths with a more modest contribution from an
optical absorber than previously reported.Comment: Accepted by Ap
A Flexible Implementation of a Matrix Laurent Series-Based 16-Point Fast Fourier and Hartley Transforms
This paper describes a flexible architecture for implementing a new fast
computation of the discrete Fourier and Hartley transforms, which is based on a
matrix Laurent series. The device calculates the transforms based on a single
bit selection operator. The hardware structure and synthesis are presented,
which handled a 16-point fast transform in 65 nsec, with a Xilinx SPARTAN 3E

The gender of retirement in a double-ageing country: Perspectives and experiences of retired women and men in Portugal
This article aimed to explore the perspectives and experiences of women and men at the stage in their lives following professional retirement, enriching the present and future of a continuously ageing Portuguese society. In order to better capture the diversity and complexity of each individual’s experiences, a qualitative methodology was used. Semi-structured individual interviews were carried out with sixteen retired people, eight women and eight men, aged between 59 and 88 years old. A thematic analysis allowed us to identify five themes in the interviewees’ discourses. We concluded that gender may be a source of heterogeneity at this stage of life, suggesting that these findings should be analysed in the scope of a life course perspective, and highlighting the impact that the different trajectories of women and men have, as well as the historical and social context in which they take place.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The CORALIE survey for southern extra-solar planets. X. A Hot Jupiter orbiting HD73256
Recent radial-velocity measurements obtained with the CORALIE spectrograph on
the 1.2-m Euler Swiss telescope at La Silla unveil the presence of a new
Jovian-mass Hot Jupiter around HD 73256. The 1.85-M_Jup planet moves on an
extremely short-period (P=2.5486 d), quasi-circular orbit. The best Keplerian
orbital solution is presented together with an unsuccessful photometric
planetary-transit search performed with the SAT Danish telescope at La Silla.
Over the time span of the observations, the photometric follow-up of the
candidate has nevertheless revealed a P=14-d photometric periodicity
corresponding to the rotational period of the star. This variation as well as
the radial-velocity jitter around the Keplerian solution are shown to be

Searching for Planets in the Hyades II: Some Implications of Stellar Magnetic Activity
The Hyades constitute a homogeneous sample of stars ideal for investigating
the dependence of planet formation on the mass of the central star. Due to
their youth, Hyades members are much more chromospherically active than stars
traditionally surveyed for planets using high precision radial velocity (RV)
techniques. Therefore, we have conducted a detailed investigation of whether
magnetic activity of our Hyades target stars will interfere with our ability to
make precise RV searches for substellar companions. We measure chromospheric
activity (which we take as a proxy for magnetic activity) by computing the
equivalent of the R'HK activity index from the Ca II K line. is not
constant in the Hyades: we confirm that it decreases with increasing
temperature in the F stars, and also find it decreases for stars cooler than
mid-K. We examine correlations between simultaneously measured R'HK and RV
using both a classical statistical test and a Bayesian odds ratio test. We find
that there is a significant correlation between R'HK and the RV in only 5 of
the 82 stars in this sample. Thus, simple Rprime HK-RV correlations will
generally not be effective in correcting the measured RV values for the effects
of magnetic activity in the Hyades. We argue that this implies long timescale
activity variations (of order a few years; i.e., magnetic cycles or growth and
decay of plage regions) will not significantly hinder our search for planets in
the Hyades if the stars are closely monitored for chromospheric activity. The
trends in the RV scatter (sigma'_v) with , vsini, and P_rot for our stars
is generally consistent with those found in field stars in the Lick planet
search data, with the notable exception of a shallower dependence of sigma'_v
