Entropy-based measure of structural order in water
We analyze the nature of the structural order established in liquid TIP4P
water in the framework provided by the multi-particle correlation expansion of
the statistical entropy. Different regimes are mapped onto the phase diagram of
the model upon resolving the pair entropy into its translational and
orientational components. These parameters are used to quantify the relative
amounts of positional and angular order in a given thermodynamic state, thus
allowing a structurally unbiased definition of low-density and high-density
water. As a result, the structurally anomalous region within which both types
of order are simultaneously disrupted by an increase of pressure at constant
temperature is clearly identified through extensive molecular-dynamics

Fast UPLC/PDA determination of squalene in Sicilian P.D.O. pistachio from Bronte: optimization of oil extraction method and analytical characterization
A fast reversed-phase UPLC method was developed for squalene determination in Sicilian pistachio
samples that entry in the European register of the products with P.D.O. In the present study the SPE
procedure was optimized for the squalene extraction prior to the UPLC/PDA analysis. The precision
of the full analytical procedure was satisfactory and the mean recoveries were 92.8 + 0.3 % and
96.6 + 0.1 % for 25 and 50 mg L-1 level of addition, respectively. Selected chromatographic
conditions allowed a very fast squalene determination; in fact it was well separated in ~ 0.54 min
with good resolution. Squalene was detected in all the pistachio samples analyzed and the levels
ranged from 55.45 to 226.34 mg . kg-1. Comparing our results with those of other studies it emerges
that squalene contents in P.D.O. Sicilian pistachio samples, generally, were higher than those
measured for other samples of different geographic origins
Pion radii in nonlocal chiral quark model
The electromagnetic radius of the charged pion and the transition radius of
the neutral pion are calculated in the framework of the nonlocal chiral quark
model. It is shown in this model that the contributions of vector mesons to the
pion radii are noticeably suppressed in comparison with a similar contribution
in the local Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The form-factor for the process
gamma*pi+pi- is calculated for the -1 GeV^2<q^2<1.6 GeV^2. Our results are in
satisfactory agreement with experimental data.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Breakup Density in Spectator Fragmentation
Proton-proton correlations and correlations of protons, deuterons and tritons
with alpha particles from spectator decays following 197Au + 197Au collisions
at 1000 MeV per nucleon have been measured with two highly efficient detector
hodoscopes. The constructed correlation functions, interpreted within the
approximation of a simultaneous volume decay, indicate a moderate expansion and
low breakup densities, similar to assumptions made in statistical
multifragmentation models.

Temperatures of Exploding Nuclei
Breakup temperatures in central collisions of 197Au + 197Au at bombarding
energies E/A = 50 to 200 MeV were determined with two methods. Isotope
temperatures, deduced from double ratios of hydrogen, helium, and lithium
isotopic yields, increase monotonically with bombarding energy from 5 MeV to 12
MeV, in qualitative agreement with a scenario of chemical freeze-out after
adiabatic expansion. Excited-state temperatures, derived from yield ratios of
states in 4He, 5Li, 6Li, and 8Be, are about 5 MeV, independent of the
projectile energy, and seem to reflect the internal temperature of fragments at
their final separation from the system.

Time Scales in Spectator Fragmentation
Proton-proton correlations and correlations of p-alpha, d-alpha, and t-alpha
from spectator decays following Au + Au collisions at 1000 AMeV have been
measured with an highly efficient detector hodoscope. The constructed
correlation functions indicate a moderate expansion and low breakup densities
similar to assumptions made in statistical multifragmentation models. In
agreement with a volume breakup rather short time scales were deduced employing
directional cuts in proton-proton correlations.

Statistical Multifragmentation of Non-Spherical Expanding Sources in Central Heavy-Ion Collisions
We study the anisotropy effects measured with INDRA at GSI in central
collisions of Xe+Sn at 50 A.MeV and Au+Au at 60, 80, 100 A.MeV incident energy.
The microcanonical multifragmentation model with non-spherical sources is used
to simulate an incomplete shape relaxation of the multifragmenting system. This
model is employed to interpret observed anisotropic distributions in the
fragment size and mean kinetic energy. The data can be well reproduced if an
expanding prolate source aligned along the beam direction is assumed. An either
non-Hubblean or non-isotropic radial expansion is required to describe the
fragment kinetic energies and their anisotropy. The qualitative similarity of
the results for the studied reactions suggests that the concept of a
longitudinally elongated freeze-out configuration is generally applicable for
central collisions of heavy systems. The deformation decreases slightly with

Thermal and Chemical Freeze-out in Spectator Fragmentation
Isotope temperatures from double ratios of hydrogen, helium, lithium,
beryllium, and carbon isotopic yields, and excited-state temperatures from
yield ratios of particle-unstable resonances in 4He, 5Li, and 8Be, were
determined for spectator fragmentation, following collisions of 197Au with
targets ranging from C to Au at incident energies of 600 and 1000 MeV per
nucleon. A deviation of the isotopic from the excited-state temperatures is
observed which coincides with the transition from residue formation to
multi-fragment production, suggesting a chemical freeze-out prior to thermal
