Get PDF
This paper examines the rate and determinants of adoption of improved rice quality enhancing technologies among a randomly selected sample of 150 farmers and 18 rice processors from six rice producing areas of Niger State. Data were collected through interview schedule using questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and regression model were adopted to analyze data. Results show that adoption of quality enhancing technologies was low among the selected sample of these rice value chain actors. The adoption indices of on-farm and post-harvest quality enhancing practices were 0.46 and 0.37 respectively. Some socioeconomic attributes including: Age, level of education, contact with extension, access to credit and level of commercialization were statistically significant determining factors (P≤0.05) influencing adoption at farm level, while post-harvest technology adoption was determined by level of education, access to credit and membership of cooperatives. Promotion of quality enhanced technologies among these actors in the rice value chain is recommended

A probable case of right atrial myxoma presenting with features of restrictive cardiomyopathy

Cardiac tumors are very rare and most frequently benign. Myxomas are the most common primary cardiac tumors accounting for about 50% of cases. The clinical presentation of atrial myxomas depends on size, anatomical location and their effects on the surrounding structures rather than the histological type. Restrictive cardiomyopathy can present with features of heart failure with typical massive ascites out of proportion to peripheral oedema known as egg on stick appearance. We present a case of a probable right atrial myxoma in a 20year old lady mimicking restrictive cardiomyopathy. Case report: Mrs. HD, a 20-year old Fulani lady was referred to us with 3 years history of progressive abdominal swelling, dyspnea on exertion and easy fatiguability. No orthopnea, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea, chest pain, palpitation or syncope. Relevant examination findings include a chronically ill looking young lady, with egg on stick appearance and mild pitting pedal edema. She had tachycardia, blood pressure 90/70mmHg & elevated Jugular venous pressure. The liver was palpable about 4cm below the right costal margin and there was massive ascites demonstrable by fluid thrill. Trans- thoracic echocardiography revealed huge, well-defined right atrial mass measuring 64 x 35 x 56.8 mm attached to the superior wall of the atrium on apical four chamber view. Conclusion:Atrial mass should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a patient presenting with features of restrictive cardiomyopathy. Echocardiography and histology are required for definitive diagnosis

Techniques for maximizing the extraction of protein from the neem seed (Indica azadirachta A. Juss) were investigated. Extractants used were sodium chloride and sodium sulphate solutions of varying concentration and pH. Maximum extractions of 17.86 g of extractable protein was obtained from 1 kg of crude protein, using 0.5 M NaCl solution at pH of 7.5. All the extracts were devoid of the usual neem smell and its bitter taste. As the pH increased from 7.0 to 7.5 there was steady increase in the quantity of extractable protein by sodium chloride solutions. However a decrease in the quantities of extractableproteins was observed at pH of 8.0 to 10 with sodium chloride solution. As the pH increased from 7.0 to 7.5 on the other hand, the quantities of the extract with sodium sulphate solutions decreased. While at pH of 8.0 to 9.5 the quantity of extractable protein increased, and the least quantity was obtained at pH of 10. 0.5 M NaCl at pH of 7.5 was found to be a better extractant for neem seed protein

Necrotic enteritis is rarely reported because it is often misdiagnosed as coccidiosis due to similarity in clinical and pathological features. A field outbreak of necrotic enteritis in a flock of 13 weeks old 4,500 commercial pullets was investigated, the onset of the disease, morbidity and mortality rates were recorded. Post mortem examinations were conducted and gross lesions were documented. Tissues were collected and fixed in 10 % neutral buffered formalin and processed for histopathological examinations. Clinical signs observed were ruffled feathers, weakness, somnolence, loss of weight and diarrhoea; while the gross lesions observed were emaciated carcasses, lean abdominal fat, enlarged, pale and haemorrhagic liver; enlarged, mottled and congested spleen; mucus and diphtheritic membrane on the jejunal mucosa and enlarged kidneys. The histopathological findings of the intestine were diffused necrotic epithelial cells with marked mononuclear cells infiltration in the mucosa with severe oedema fluid. The necrotic enteritis was diagnosed based on clinical signs, pathology as well as isolation and identification of Clostridium perfringes. Triplesulfa® (sulfadimidine sodium, sulfadiazine sodium and sulfamerazine sodium); Tridox® L.A (20% Oxytetracycline long acting) and Enterocillin® (Amoxycillintrihydrate and Colistin sulphate) were ineffective, while copper sulphate at 1g/5L of drinking water was found to be effective for the treatment of the disease. The haematological values indicated lymphocytosis due to damage of the tissue caused by C. perfringes and the toxins produced. Benuang (Octomeles sumatrana Miq) wood less attractive to industrial carpentry, because of Benuang wood has a low at strength level (strength class IV - V). Densification of wood is one solution, which is the timber compaction process that aims to improve the strength and durability of the wood. There are two factors for treatment in this study that include temperature factors felts (1700C, 1800C and 1900C) and Time Felts (50 minutes and 60 minutes). Samples made of from Benuang with wood measuring 30 cm (L) x 8 cm (W) x 4 cm (H), then steamed in an autoclave and hot pressed (hot press) with a target thickness of 30% and the pressure felt by 60 kg/cm2. Then created a test sample for testing. The parameters measured are physical properties (color and touch wood impression, moisture content, density and dimensional changes) and mechanical properties (static bending persistence / Modulus of Elasticity, strength of bending fracture / Modulus of Rupture, and firmness press parallel fiber / Cruishing Maximum Strength). The design that used in this study is a 3x2 factorial experimental design in a completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 replications. Results showed that the densification process on wood Benuang generally not been able to increase the strength of the timber, that is still in the same class with the timber control (strenght class IV-V). But partially strength there is still best value that on the showed densification timber with temperature 1800C with clamp time for 60 minutes, with decrease in water content of 43.12%, increase in value density of 27,22%, dimensional change impairment of 7,57%, MOE impairment of 71,61%, MOR values decrease by 61,93% and MCS impairment of 18,41%. The control of the main cycle parameters in supercritical CO2 (sCO2) systems during off-design and transient operation is crucial for advancing their technological readiness level. In smaller scale power units (<0.5–5 MW), costs and complexity constraints limit the number of auxiliary components in the power loop, making the design of the control system even more challenging. Among the possible strategies, the regulation of system inventory, which consists in varying the CO2 fluid mass in the power loop to achieve a given control target, represents a promising alternative. Such technique however poses several technical challenges that are still to be fully understood. To fill this gap, this work presents a comprehensive steady-state and transient analysis of inventory control systems, referring in particular to a 50 kW sCO2 test facility being commissioned at Brunel University. Stability implications (e.g. pressure gradients in the loop) and the effects of variable inventory tank size are discussed. Tank volumes 3 times higher than the one of the power loop (including the receiver) can lead to a higher controllability range (±30% of the nominal turbine inlet temperature) and an extended availability of the control action (slower tank discharge). A PI controller is also designed to regulate the turbine inlet temperature around the target of 465 °C in response to waste heat variations.European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No. 680599 for the I-ThERM project; EPSRC Grant No. EP/P004636 for the OPTEMIN project and Grant No, EP/V001795/1 for the SCOTWAHR project

The fourth ventricle is usually affected in posterior cranial fossa tumours and other intracranial and ventricular disorders. Therefore, accurate measurement of the fourth ventricle will go a long way in evaluating braindisorders and decision making prior to neurosurgical procedures. This, therefore, places high premium on the accuracy in the technique and equipment used in obtaining a good Computerised Tomography (CT) Scan of the brain. To provide baseline data for measurements of normal fourth ventricle using computed tomographic Scan. Measurement was made with Dragon V3.1.1. A total of 652 scan examinations of subjects were analyzed in this study. 434 (65.79%) of the subjects were males while 217 (34.21%) were females. (M: F ratio = 2:1).The mean length of the fourth ventricles was 9.55mm and mean width was 12.86mm. Maximum length was 13.95mm and minimum length was 5.1mm. Least width was 2.65mm and greatest width was 17.28mm. Thus, the difference between the lengths of the fourth ventricles was not statistically significant (p.0.05), so also there was no statistically significant difference (p> 0.05) between the width of the fourth ventricles in males and females. In conclusion, this study has provided reference ranges for the normal values of the length and width of the fourth ventricle in male and female Nigerians. Keywords: Cephalometry, assessment, fourth ventricles, CT, Nigeria
