    Automatic structures, rational growth and geometrically finite hyperbolic groups

    We show that the set SA(G)SA(G) of equivalence classes of synchronously automatic structures on a geometrically finite hyperbolic group GG is dense in the product of the sets SA(P)SA(P) over all maximal parabolic subgroups PP. The set BSA(G)BSA(G) of equivalence classes of biautomatic structures on GG is isomorphic to the product of the sets BSA(P)BSA(P) over the cusps (conjugacy classes of maximal parabolic subgroups) of GG. Each maximal parabolic PP is a virtually abelian group, so SA(P)SA(P) and BSA(P)BSA(P) were computed in ``Equivalent automatic structures and their boundaries'' by M.Shapiro and W.Neumann, Intern. J. of Alg. Comp. 2 (1992) We show that any geometrically finite hyperbolic group has a generating set for which the full language of geodesics for GG is regular. Moreover, the growth function of GG with respect to this generating set is rational. We also determine which automatic structures on such a group are equivalent to geodesic ones.     Linguistic DNA: Investigating Conceptual Change in Early Modern English Discourse

    This article describes the background and premises of the AHRC-funded project, ‘The Linguistic DNA of Modern Western Thought’. We offer an empirical, encyclopaedic approach to historical semantics regarding ‘conceptual history’, i.e. the history of concepts that shape thought, culture and society in a particular period. We relate the project to traditional work in conceptual and semantic history and define our object of study as the discursive concept, a category of meaning encoded linguistically as a cluster of expressions that co-occur in discourse. We describe our principal data source, EEBO-TCP, and introduce our key research interests, namely, the contexts of conceptual change, the semantic structure of lexical fields and the nature of lexicalisation pressure. We outline our computational processes, which build upon the theoretical definition of discursive concepts, to discover the linguistically encoded forms underpinning the discursive concepts we seek to identify in EEBO-TCP. Finally, we share preliminary results via a worked example, exploring the discursive contexts in which paradigmatic terms of key cultural concepts emerge. We consider the extent to which particular genres, discourses and users in the early modern period make paradigms, and examine the extent to which these contexts determine the characteristics of key concepts

    An image representation based convolutional network for DNA classification

    The folding structure of the DNA molecule combined with helper molecules, also referred to as the chromatin, is highly relevant for the functional properties of DNA. The chromatin structure is largely determined by the underlying primary DNA sequence, though the interaction is not yet fully understood. In this paper we develop a convolutional neural network that takes an image-representation of primary DNA sequence as its input, and predicts key determinants of chromatin structure. The method is developed such that it is capable of detecting interactions between distal elements in the DNA sequence, which are known to be highly relevant. Our experiments show that the method outperforms several existing methods both in terms of prediction accuracy and training time

    Double beta decay experiments

    The present status of double beta decay experiments are reviewed. The results of the most sensitive experiments, NEMO-3 and CUORICINO, are discussed. Proposals for future double beta decay experiments are considered.     Evaluating invasion risk for freshwater fishes in South Africa

    South Africa, as a signatory of the Convention on Biological Diversity, has an obligation to identify, prioritise and manage invasive species and their introduction pathways. However, this requires knowledge of the introduction pathways, factors influencing establishment success, invasive potential, current distributions and ecological impacts. Objectives: To evaluate the Fish Invasiveness Screening Kit (FISK) to predict the invasion risk posed by fish species proposed for introduction into South Africa. Method: FISK assessments were compiled for species whose invasion status in South Africa was known. A Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was conducted to calibrate the FISK for South Africa. The calibrated FISK was used to evaluate the risk that three species recently proposed for importation for aquaculture could become invasive in South Africa. Results: A FISK score of 14 was identified as the threshold to delineate between species that could become invasive in South Africa and those that are unlikely to become invasive. Of the three species evaluated, Silurus glanis had a high risk of becoming invasive in South Africa, Lates calcarifer was likely to be invasive and Oncorhynchus tshawytscha was unlikely to be invasive in South Africa. Conclusion: FISK was demonstrated to be a useful risk assessment tool to evaluate the invasion risk posed by species proposed for use in aquaculture. For the large number of fish imported for the pet trade, a rapid screening assessment to flag potentially high risk species was recommended prior to a full FISK assessment for flagged species.EM201

    An online analytical processing multi-dimensional data warehouse for malaria data

    Malaria is a vector-borne disease that contributes substantially to the global burden of morbidity and mortality. The management of malaria-related data from heterogeneous, autonomous, and distributed data sources poses unique challenges and requirements. Although online data storage systems exist that address specific malaria-related issues, a globally integrated online resource to address different aspects of the disease does not exist. In this article, we describe the design, implementation, and applications of a multidimensional, online analytical processing data warehouse, named the VecNet Data Warehouse (VecNet-DW). It is the first online, globally-integrated platform that provides efficient search, retrieval and visualization of historical, predictive, and static malaria-related data, organized in data marts. Historical and static data are modelled using star schemas, while predictive data are modelled using a snowflake schema. The major goals, characteristics, and components of the DW are described along with its data taxonomy and ontology, the external data storage systems and the logical modelling and physical design phases. Results are presented as screenshots of a Dimensional Data browser, a Lookup Tables browser, and a Results Viewer interface. The power of the DW emerges from integrated querying of the different data marts and structuring those queries to the desired dimensions, enabling users to search, view, analyse, and store large volumes of aggregated data, and responding better to the increasing demands of users

For new ventures, procuring capital is a notoriously difficult process. To succeed, an entrepreneurial team must overcome investor uncertainty about the quality of their product/service/idea and market, as well as their own capability to execute. This thesis puts forward the hypothesis that there are multiple venture investor "types," or "personalities," defined by the way in which they weight the importance of product/idea/service/market (horse) vs. entrepreneurial team (jockey) during the decision-making process. Therefore, an entrepreneurial team should match the strengths of their business with the right investor type to maximize chances for funding. To test this hypothesis, we ran an empirical study which mimicked the first two stages of the venture investment process - executive summary review and entrepreneurial pitch assessment. The experimental results suggest that investors do seem to report varied preferences on the importance of "horse" vs. "jockey." In addition, investor personality may dictate decision-making at the executive summary stage. However, the overall quality of a business' pitch can have significant influence on investor opinion and "willingness to invest" regardless of investor personality.by Alexander Williams.S.M

    Value proposition development of early stage computational fluid dynamics analysis in automotive product development

    Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2009.Includes bibliographical references (p. 63-64).Concurrent engineering initiatives and the closely related principle of front-loading development processes - identifying and solving problems early rather than waiting for traditional development and test processes to uncover them - have been shown to be highly effective in improving product development performance. This often means shifting to new experimentation technologies that can be used much earlier in the development process than traditional technologies, delivering performance assessments much faster. Thus problems within new design ideas are exposed much sooner, allowing for cost-effective problem solving techniques without having to rewind significant parts of the development process. Front-loading accelerates innovation by permitting new ideas to be tested and refined faster than traditional techniques, allowing them to be incorporated into products without the risks often associated with the use of unproven ideas. Traditional methods might still be needed for fine-tuning a design, but new rapid-feedback technologies have demonstrated their value when used within their limitations. Front-loading has gained acceptance in many vehicle product development organizations, but one field in which it has not yet been introduced for early-stage design assessments and problem solving is air flow analysis. The earliest stages of design for a new vehicle focus largely on the shape and character of the vehicle's surfaces, which in turn have a significant influence on many aspects of the vehicle's performance.(cont.) Thus the introduction of new experimentation technologies like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) requires a great deal more consideration due to their impact on these critical early stages of product development, but the value of these methods and changes can be demonstrated.     T and S dualities and The cosmological evolution of the dilaton and the scale factors

    Cosmologically stabilizing radion along with the dilaton is one of the major concerns of low energy string theory. One can hope that T and S dualities can provide a plausible answer. In this work we study the impact of S and T duality invariances on dilaton gravity. We have shown various instances where physically interesting models arise as a result of imposing the mentioned invariances. In particular S duality has a very privileged effect in that the dilaton equations partially decouple from the evolution of the scale factors. This makes it easy to understand the general rules for the stabilization of the dilaton. We also show that certain T duality invariant actions become S duality invariance compatible. That is they mimic S duality when extra dimensions stabilize.Comment: Corrected a misleading interpretation of the S duality transformation and a wrong comment on d=10.     Robust Entanglement in Atomic Systems via Lambda-Type Processes

    It is shown that the system of two three-level atoms in Λ\Lambda configuration in a cavity can evolve to a long-lived maximum entangled state if the Stokes photons vanish from the cavity by means of either leakage or damping.
