    Characterization of elastic scattering near a Feshbach resonance in rubidium 87

    The s-wave scattering length for elastic collisions between 87Rb atoms in the state |f,m_f>=|1,1> is measured in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance near 1007 G. Experimentally, the scattering length is determined from the mean-field driven expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a homogeneous magnetic field. The scattering length is measured as a function of the magnetic field and agrees with the theoretical expectation. The position and the width of the resonance are determined to be 1007.40 G and 0.20 G, respectively.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures minor revisions: added Ref.6, included error bar

    Hydrodynamic behavior in expanding thermal clouds of Rb-87

    We study hydrodynamic behavior in expanding thermal clouds of Rb-87 released from an elongated trap. At our highest densities the mean free path is smaller than the radial size of the cloud. After release the clouds expand anisotropically. The cloud temperature drops by as much as 30%. This is attributed to isentropic cooling during the early stages of the expansion. We present an analytical model to describe the expansion and to estimate the cooling. Important consequences for time-of-flight thermometry are discussed.Comment: 7 pages with 2 figure

    Energy-Time Efficiency in Aerial Swarm Deployment

    Abstract A major challenge in swarm robotics is efficiently deploying robots into unknown environments, minimising energy and time costs. This is especially important with small aerial robots which have extremely limited flight autonomy. This paper compares three deployment strategies characterised by nominal computation, memory, communication and sensing requirements, and hence are suitable for flying robots. Energy consumption is decreased by reducing unnecessary flight following two premises: 1) exploiting environmental information gathered by the robots; 2) avoiding diminishing returns and reducing interference between robots. Using a 3-D dynamics simulator we examine energy and time metrics, and also scalability effects. Results indicate that a novel strategy that controls the density of flying robots is most promising in reducing swarm energy costs while maintaining rapid search times. Furthermore, we highlight the energy-time tradeoff and the importance of measuring both metrics, and also the significance of electronics power in calculating total energy consumption, even if it is small relative to locomotion power.

    Estimation of air quality degradation due to Saharan dust at Nouakchott, Mauritania, from horizontal visibility data

    It is now irrefutable that air pollution caused by large amounts of Total Suspended Particulates (TSP) and respiratory particulates or Particulate Matter less than 10 mu m in aerodynamic diameter (PM10) has numerous undesired consequences on human health. Air quality degradation far from the African continent, in the US and in Europe, caused by high concentrations of African dust, is seen as a major threat even though most of these countries are very distant from the Sahara. Surprisingly, no estimates of TSP or PM10 levels near the Saharan dust source are available. Based on horizontal visibility observations which are reduced by the presence of dust in the atmosphere, TSP and PM10 levels are estimated throughout the year 2000 at Nouakchott-Airport, Mauritania, using relations found in the literature. It appears that concentrations of particles are significant both in terms magnitude and frequency, as the 24-hour PM10 thresholds established by the US EPA National Ambient Air Quality Standards and the EU Limits Values for Air Quality were exceeded 86 and 137 times, respectively. The average annual concentration is far above air quality standards and estimated at 159 mu g m(-3) for TSP and 108 mu g m(-3) for PM10. These very high particulate levels are likely to represent an important public health hazard and should be considered as a major environmental risk
