    Get PDF
In this paper, a green method is reported for the synthesis and characterization of zinc nanoparticles using Ipomoea asarifolia leaf extract as reducing and capping agent together with polyethylene glycol (PEG-10000) as stabilizing agent. The biosynthesized zinc nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM); and were used as adsorbent for the removal of Bromophenol blue (BPB), and Eriochrome black T (EBT) dyes. Isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics of the adsorption process were studied with the view to understand the adsorption mechanism. The adsorption isotherms were closely described by Freundlich isotherm model with correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.99. The adsorption kinetics data were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order rate model with high regression coefficient (0.998). The intra particle diffusion of BPB anId EBT on ZnNPs represents the rate-limiting step. The adsorption capacity increases with the increase in temperature (from 298 to 318K) and thermodynamic calculations suggested that the adsorption of the dyes onto ZnNPs is an endothermic process with ΔH values of 10.78kJ/mol for BPB and 14.14 kJ/mol for EBT respectively. Keywords: Adsorption, Bromophenol blue, Eriochrome black T, Ipomoea asarifolia, Zinc nanoparticle

Optimization of gas turbines for sustainable turbojet propulsion

    Get PDF
AbstractGas-turbines are widely used to power aero planes because they are light, compact with a high power-to-weight ratio. In the turbo jet engine, the main operating variables are: compressor pressure ratio rp and turbine inlet temperature (TIT). These variables affect the specific thrust and specific fuel consumption (SFC), which represent the main performance parameters. In addition to the analytical work, a computer program of the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) was used for analysis and optimization. The analysis shows that the specific thrust strongly depends on turbine inlet temperature (TIT), where a 10% decrease in TIT results in 6.7% decrease in specific thrust and 6.8% decrease in SFC. Furthermore, the value of optimum pressure ratio rf for maximum specific thrust increases with TIT. A 10% decrease from design TIT results in 11.43% decrease in rf. The value of optimum pressure ratio for the turbojet engine operating at Ma=0.8 and altitude Alt=13000m, and TIT=1700K was found to be 14

Undoped zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were prepared by a sol-gel method. The effect of annealing temperature from 500 to 700°C on the structural and optical properties of the films was studied. The films nanostructure characterized by the X-ray diffraction method showed that the films were single phase ZnO with wurtzite structure. The surface morphology studied using the field emission scanning electron microscope showed that the thickness of the films increased with the increment of annealing temperature. The grain size of the films increased with the increment of the annealing temperature. The film surface roughness measured using the atomic force microscope showed that the surface roughness of the film decreased (from 2.3 to 1.02 nm ), when the annealing temperature increased from 500 to 600°C then it increased to 3.06 nm at 700°C. The optical properties were studied by the UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results showed that the films had high transmittance (above 80%) in the visible range and the exciton absorption occurred at a wavelength of 379 nm. The energy gap decreased with the increment of annealing temperature

This study was carried out to determine the response of Japanese quails experimentally infected with Newcastle disease virus (NDV) kudu 113 strain using a haemagglutination inhibition test and the ability of the species to transmit the infection to chickens. The administration of kudu 113 strain of Newcastle disease virus (108.5 /ml) orally at 0.1ml/quail in the infected group (group B) resulted in an antibody response with a geometric mean titre of 23.79 on day 32 when compared to non-infected quails (group A) which did not show (p>0.05) evidence of Newcastle disease antibodies throughout the experiment and also differed significantly (p<0.05) from group B, indicating that oral inoculation of the virus was successful and the birds were infected. Clinical signs of ND were first observed in the quails 7 days post-infection (pi) with effects on egg production and egg quality. The transmission of the velogenic NDV from the quails (group B) to the sentinel chickens was clinically evident 4 days after they were placed in close contact with the infected quails. There was 100% mortality in the sentinel chickens between 4 to 7 days post contact. Thus, quails could serve as a potential source of ND for chickens

    Get PDF
Legal policy is an official policy that is enforced by either adding new laws or by replacing old laws with new ones in order for a country to accomplish its goals. In environmental context, attention to legal policy becomes crucial, especially when associated with massive mining that takes place in some areas. In other words, mining activity in all its forms and operational methods is bound to be influenced by government's environmental policies, including those in the form of laws and regulations. Since environment and mining affect each other, they are inseparable. The substances of environmental policies affect policies in the mining sector. Hence this normative study aims to do a mapping of environmental policies in regards to tin mining in Bangka Belitung. The data collection technique employed in this qualitative study was literature review, with laws and regulations as its primary data. This study used two approaches, namely statute approach and conceptual approach

A region’s development planning should be carried out by referring to the strategic issues faced by the region. Thus, strategic issues become the basis upon which regional governments formulate their policies and work programs. This study examined how each region in Bangka Belitung Islands Province positioned strategic issues of ecology in its regional development planning. The current writers examined eight regional governments’ Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RMTDP) documents; one of which belongs to the provincial government, while the rest belongs to the regency/city governments. This study found that ecological issues comprised an average 17.6% of the strategic issues in all of the planning documents, the highest of which was found in Belitung Regency’s planning document. In addition, the analysis revealed that the general focus of the strategic ecological issues was environmental damage, which was reported by three of the regions as a result of mining activities. This study provides an illustration of how each regional government is committed to take ecological issues seriously and include them in the strategic issues at the regional level

Article 28H and section (4) of Article 33 in the Indonesian Constitution guarantee every citizen the right to a good and healthy environment with green economy. In order to implement it, the government issued Law No. 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management. The environmental regulations that became the umbrella act are facing challenges both in substance and implementation. Substantially, questions remain whether the green constitution has been incarnated in this regulation, and how it positions itself as the umbrella act for a number of regulations. In implementation, the challenges include the availability of legislations, from government regulations to technical policy, and its implementation in regional level, both at the provincial and regency levels in Bangka Belitung Islands. In each regime, the environmental issues have always been a part of strategic issues. This research focused on identifying environmental regulations from upstream to downstream, and how they are implemented in the context of environmental issues due to tin mining in Bangka Belitung. Data were obtained through literature review using statute and conceptual approaches
