Current-mediated synchronization of a pair of beating non-identical flagella

The basic phenomenology of experimentally observed synchronization (i.e., a stochastic phase locking) of identical, beating flagella of a biflagellate alga is known to be captured well by a minimal model describing the dynamics of coupled, limit-cycle, noisy oscillators (known as the noisy Kuramoto model). As demonstrated experimentally, the amplitudes of the noise terms therein, which stem from fluctuations of the rotary motors, depend on the flagella length. Here we address the conceptually important question which kind of synchrony occurs if the two flagella have different lengths such that the noises acting on each of them have different amplitudes. On the basis of a minimal model, too, we show that a different kind of synchrony emerges, and here it is mediated by a current carrying, steady-state; it manifests itself via correlated "drifts" of phases. We quantify such a synchronization mechanism in terms of appropriate order parameters QQ and QSQ_{\cal S} - for an ensemble of trajectories and for a single realization of noises of duration S{\cal S}, respectively. Via numerical simulations we show that both approaches become identical for long observation times S{\cal S}. This reveals an ergodic behavior and implies that a single-realization order parameter QSQ_{\cal S} is suitable for experimental analysis for which ensemble averaging is not always possible.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

    A quantum volume hologram

We propose a new scheme for parallel spatially multimode quantum memory for light. The scheme is based on counter-propagating quantum signal wave and strong classical reference wave, like in a classical volume hologram, and therefore can be called a quantum volume hologram. The medium for the hologram consists of a spatially extended ensemble of atoms placed in a magnetic field. The write-in and read-out of this quantum hologram is as simple as that of its classical counterpart and consists of a single pass illumination. In addition we show that the present scheme for a quantum hologram is less sensitive to diffraction and therefore is capable of achieving higher density of storage of spatial modes as compared to previous proposals. A quantum hologram capable of storing entangled images can become an important ingredient in quantum information processing and quantum imaging.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

Educating the Approaches to Intellectual Property as the Trends of Application of Subjective Good Faith in Russian Law

In Russian law, the term "good faith" ("good conscience") refers to different concepts: "honest practice" and "ignorance of the fact when such ignorance generates legal consequences." The article investigate  the educational aspects of distinguishing  objective and subjective good faith. The questions of application of the rules on subjective good faith to the relations arising in connection with the establishment, circulation and protection of civil rights are considered. The analysis of the content of the legal regime of objects of absolute property rights (things, property security, share in the right of common property, corporate rights) allowed us to conclude that the consideration of the rules on subjective good faith is a natural, necessary element of the legal regime of any object of civil turnover, and the real question is only the recognition of such an element of the legal regime by the rule of law and the definition of the features of its application

Unconditional steady-state entanglement in macroscopic hybrid systems by coherent noise cancellation

The generation of entanglement between disparate physical objects is a key ingredient in the field of quantum technologies, since they can have different functionalities in a quantum network. Here we propose and analyze a generic approach to steady-state entanglement generation between two oscillators with different temperatures and decoherence properties coupled in cascade to a common unidirectional light field. The scheme is based on a combination of coherent noise cancellation and dynamical cooling techniques for two oscillators with effective masses of opposite signs, such as quasi-spin and motional degrees of freedom, respectively. The interference effect provided by the cascaded setup can be tuned to implement additional noise cancellation leading to improved entanglement even in the presence of a hot thermal environment. The unconditional entanglement generation is advantageous since it provides a ready-to-use quantum resource. Remarkably, by comparing to the conditional entanglement achievable in the dynamically stable regime, we find our unconditional scheme to deliver a virtually identical performance when operated optimally.Comment: Final version; 6 pages, 3 figures + Supplemental Materia
