A standardised method for measuring in situ denitrification in shallow aquifers: numerical validation and measurements in riparian wetlands
A tracer test to examine in situ denitrification in shallow groundwater by a piezometer with a packer system used bromide as a tracer of dilution and acetylene (10%) to block the denitrification process at the nitrous oxide stage. During the test, dissolved oxygen, nitrate (NO3-), bromide (Br-), nitrous oxide (N2O) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured. To calibrate the experimental method, comparison with numerical simulations of the groundwater transfer were carried out, taking into account the environmental characteristics. The method was tested by measurements undertaken in different environmental conditions (geology, land use and hydrology) in two riparian wetlands. Denitrification rates measured by this method ranged from 5.7 10-6 g N-NO3-L-1 h-1 to 1.97 10-3 g N-NO3-L-1 h-1 The method is applicable in shallow aquifers with a permeability from 10-2 to 10-4m s-1
The {\L}ojasiewicz exponent of a set of weighted homogeneous ideals
We give an expression for the {\L}ojasiewicz exponent of a set of ideals
which are pieces of a weighted homogeneous filtration. We also study the
application of this formula to the computation of the {\L}ojasiewicz exponent
of the gradient of a semi-weighted homogeneous function (\C^n,0)\to (\C,0)
with an isolated singularity at the origin.Comment: 15 page
Lojasiewicz exponent of families of ideals, Rees mixed multiplicities and Newton filtrations
We give an expression for the {\L}ojasiewicz exponent of a wide class of
n-tuples of ideals in \O_n using the information given by a
fixed Newton filtration. In order to obtain this expression we consider a
reformulation of {\L}ojasiewicz exponents in terms of Rees mixed
multiplicities. As a consequence, we obtain a wide class of semi-weighted
homogeneous functions for which the
{\L}ojasiewicz of its gradient map attains the maximum possible
value.Comment: 25 pages. Updated with minor change
The effect of inelastic processes on tunneling
We study an electron that interacts with phonons or other linear or nonlinear
excitations as it resonantly tunnels. The method we use is based on mapping a
many-body problem in a large variational space exactly onto a one-body problem.
The method is conceptually simpler than previous Green's function approaches,
and allows the essentially exact numerical solution of much more general
problems. We solve tunneling problems with transverse channels, multiple sites
coupled to phonons, and multiple phonon degrees of freedom and excitations.Comment: 12 pages, REVTex, 4 figures in compressed tar .ps forma
Singularities and Topology of Meromorphic Functions
We present several aspects of the "topology of meromorphic functions", which
we conceive as a general theory which includes the topology of holomorphic
functions, the topology of pencils on quasi-projective spaces and the topology
of polynomial functions.Comment: 21 pages, 1 figur
Strong Discontinuities in the Complex Photonic Band Structure of Transmission Metallic Gratings
Complex photonic band structures (CPBS) of transmission metallic gratings
with rectangular slits are shown to exhibit strong discontinuities that are not
evidenced in the usual energetic band structures. These discontinuities are
located on Wood's anomalies and reveal unambiguously two different types of
resonances, which are identified as horizontal and vertical surface-plasmon
resonances. Spectral position and width of peaks in the transmission spectrum
can be directly extracted from CPBS for both kinds of resonances.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, REVTeX version
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) agonists decrease lipoprotein lipase secretion and glycated LDL uptake by human macrophages
AbstractLipoprotein lipase (LPL) acts independently of its function as triglyceride hydrolase by stimulating macrophage binding and uptake of native, oxidized and glycated LDL. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are nuclear receptors expressed in monocyte/macrophages, where they control cholesterol homeostasis. Here we study the role of PPARs in the regulation of LPL expression and activity in human monocytes and macrophages. Incubation of human monocytes or macrophages with PPARα or PPARγ ligands increases LPL mRNA and intracellular protein levels. By contrast, PPAR activators decrease secreted LPL mass and enzyme activity in differentiated macrophages. These actions of PPAR activators are associated with a reduced uptake of glycated LDL and could influence atherosclerosis development associated with diabetes

Acoustic Phonon-Assisted Resonant Tunneling via Single Impurities
We perform the investigations of the resonant tunneling via impurities
embedded in the AlAs barrier of a single GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. In the
characteristics measured at 30mK, the contribution of individual donors
is resolved and the fingerprints of phonon assistance in the tunneling process
are seen. The latter is confirmed by detailed analysis of the tunneling rates
and the modeling of the resonant tunneling contribution to the current.
Moreover, fluctuations of the local structure of the DOS (LDOS) and Fermi edge
singularities are observed.Comment: accepted in Phys. Rev.
Scanning probe method for mapping the intensity and emission spectrum of semiconductor laser structures
Scanning probe method is proposed that allows to visualize regions of light emission on the cleavage surface of semiconductor lasers with a subwavelength resolution. The method is based on detecting under vacuum conditions of a shift in the resonant frequency of the probe related with the cantilever or probe tip heating by laser radiation
