    Unveiling the inner morphology and gas kinematics of NGC 5135 with ALMA

    The local Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC5135, thanks to its almost face-on appearance, a bulge overdensity of stars, the presence of a large-scale bar, an AGN and a Supernova Remnant, is an excellent target to investigate the dynamics of inflows, outflows, star formation and AGN feedback. Here we present a reconstruction of the gas morphology and kinematics in the inner regions of this galaxy, based on the analysis of Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) archival data. To our purpose, we combine the available \sim100 pc resolution ALMA 1.3 and 0.45 mm observations of dust continuum emission, the spectroscopic maps of two transitions of the CO molecule (tracer of molecular mass in star forming and nuclear regions), and of the CS molecule (tracer of the dense star forming regions) with the outcome of the SED decomposition. By applying the 3D^{\rm 3D}BAROLO software (3D-Based Analysis of Rotating Object via Line Observations), we have been able to fit the galaxy rotation curves reconstructing a 3D tilted-ring model of the disk. Most of the observed emitting features are described by our kinematic model. We also attempt an interpretation for the emission in few regions that the axisymmetric model fails to reproduce. The most relevant of these is a region at the northern edge of the inner bar, where multiple velocity components overlap, as a possible consequence of the expansion of a super-bubble.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, resubmitted to MNRAS after moderate revision

    The VANDELS survey: Dust attenuation in star-forming galaxies at z=34\mathbf{z=3-4}

    We present the results of a new study of dust attenuation at redshifts 3<z<43 < z < 4 based on a sample of 236236 star-forming galaxies from the VANDELS spectroscopic survey. Motivated by results from the First Billion Years (FiBY) simulation project, we argue that the intrinsic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of star-forming galaxies at these redshifts have a self-similar shape across the mass range 8.28.2 \leq log(M/M)10.6(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) \leq 10.6 probed by our sample. Using FiBY data, we construct a set of intrinsic SED templates which incorporate both detailed star formation and chemical abundance histories, and a variety of stellar population synthesis (SPS) model assumptions. With this set of intrinsic SEDs, we present a novel approach for directly recovering the shape and normalization of the dust attenuation curve. We find, across all of the intrinsic templates considered, that the average attenuation curve for star-forming galaxies at z3.5z\simeq3.5 is similar in shape to the commonly-adopted Calzetti starburst law, with an average total-to-selective attenuation ratio of RV=4.18±0.29R_{V}=4.18\pm0.29. We show that the optical attenuation (AVA_V) versus stellar mass (MM_{\star}) relation predicted using our method is consistent with recent ALMA observations of galaxies at 2<z<32<z<3 in the \emph{Hubble} \emph{Ultra} \emph{Deep} \emph{Field} (HUDF), as well as empirical AVMA_V - M_{\star} relations predicted by a Calzetti-like law. Our results, combined with other literature data, suggest that the AVMA_V - M_{\star} relation does not evolve over the redshift range 0<z<50<z<5, at least for galaxies with log(M/M)9.5(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) \gtrsim 9.5. Finally, we present tentative evidence which suggests that the attenuation curve may become steeper at log(M/M)9.0(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) \lesssim 9.0.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Further investigations into the single metal deposition (SMD II) technique for the detection of latent fingermarks

    Single metal deposition (SMD II), a recently proposed method for the development of latent fingermarks, was investigated by systematically altering aspects of the procedure to assess their effect on the level of development and contrast achieved. Gold nanoparticle size, temperature of the deposition solution bath, and orbital shaking during detection were shown to affect the levels of development and contrast obtained. Gold nanoparticles of diameter 15–21 nm were found to be most effective for satisfactory visualisation of latent fingermarks, while solutions that were applied at room temperature were found to adequately balance the ratio between the contrast of the fingermark ridge detail and the level of background staining achieved. Finally, optimum levels of development and contrast were obtained through constant agitation of both solution baths at approximately 50 RPM throughout the submersion time. SMD II was also tested on a large variety of substrate types and shown to be effective on a range of porous, non-porous, and semi-porous surfaces; however, the detection quality can be significantly influenced by the substrate nature. This resulted in the production of dark grey, white, or gold coloured fingermarks on different surfaces, as well as reversed detection on certain types of plastic, similarly seen through the use of vacuum metal deposition. © 2016 Elsevier Ireland Lt

    Study Effect of Gandaria Fruit Concentration on Seaweed (Eucheuma cottonii) Jelly Candy

    The purpose of the research was to determine the chemical, physical and organoleptic characteristics of jelly candy with the addition of gandaria flesh. This study used a single randomized complete design with 5 treatment level and 2 replications. The treatment levels in this study were: P1 (Meat Gandaria), P2 (25% Meat Gandaria), P3 (50% Meat Gandaria), P4 (75% Meat Gandaria), P5 (100% Meat Gandaria). The results showed that the treatment using doubles flesh was better than the others because it had a water content (16,70%), ash content (0,92%), total sugar (23,71%), pH (5,25%), total acid (8,05%). The seaweed jelly candy turned out to be preferred by panelists in all categories of hedonic of taste (2,65%), aroma (2,35%), color (2,65%), texture (2,7%), general acceptance (2,9%), level of acidity (2,35%)

    In vivo passage of Salmonella Typhimurium results in minor mutations in the bacterial genome and increases in vitro invasiveness

    International audienceAbstractEggs and raw or undercooked egg-containing food items are frequently identified as the bacterial source during epidemiolocal investigation of Salmonella outbreaks. Multi-locus variable number of tandem repeats analysis (MLVA) is a widely used Salmonella typing method enabling the study of diversity within populations of the same serotype. In vivo passage, however, has been linked with changes in MLVA type and more broadly the Salmonella genome. We sought to investigate whether in vivo passage through layer hens had an effect on MLVA type as well as the bacterial genome and whether any mutations affected bacterial virulence. Layer hens were infected with either Salmonella Typhimurium DT9 (03-24-11-11-523) as part of a single infection or were co-infected with an equal amount of Salmonella Mbandaka. Salmonella shedding in both single and co-infected birds was variable over the course of the 16-week experiment. Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Mbandaka were identified in feces of co-infected birds. Salmonella colonies isolated from fecal samples were subtyped using MLVA. A single change in SSTR-6 was observed in Salmonella Typhimurium strains isolated from co-infected birds. Isolates of Salmonella Typhimurium of both the parent (03-24-11-11-523) and modified (03-24-12-11-523) MLVA type were sequenced and compared with the genome of the parent strain. Sequence analysis revealed that in vivo passaging resulted in minor mutation events. Passaged isolates exhibited significantly higher invasiveness in cultured human intestinal epithelial cells than the parent strain. The microevolution observed in this study suggests that changes in MLVA may arise more commonly and may have clinical significance

    BMI Screening Tool to Identify Elementary School Children at Risk for Obesity

    Obesity is a public health epidemic and is as relevant in the pediatric population as it is in adults. The purpose of this DNP project was to develop a clinical practice guideline (CPG) that would use existing evidence to support the development of body mass index (BMI) screening in primary schools for the early detection of childhood obesity. Globally, more than 41 million children were obese or overweight by 2018. Due to incidence rates, developing an effective strategy to address childhood obesity is critical. The practice-focused question asked whether the evidence supported the development of a CPG for implementing BMI screening in elementary schools. For the literature review, multiple public data sources were used to search key terms. For this project, the conceptual model of nursing and health policy was used to identify areas of practice that work and those needing improvement. Using Bloom’s taxonomy as a guide, steps were followed until the CPG was developed to assist practitioners in early identification and treatment of childhood obesity in the identified school district in Illinois. Findings from literature review were used to develop the practice guideline. The guideline was co-developed by the school nurse and was reviewed by 22 anonymous expert panelists using the AGREE II tool. Objectives were met by evaluating the practice problem, analyzing the current system that was in place, applying knowledge into practice, creating a new system, then ultimately explaining and educating the school staff on the new system for possible implementation. This project was designed to help schools become partners with parents and healthcare providers to identify BMI concerns early, leading to social change for children, their families, communities, and institutions

    DonorNet and the Potential Effects on Organ Utilization

    The evolution of communication as donor data flows from organ procurement organization to transplant centers has evolved with the incorporation of DonorNet 2007 ® into the UNet SM system. The ensuing study looks at DonorNet's impact on this process. We established defined time periods for comparison purposes. The study looked at match number for organ placement and overall organ utilization with a focus on ischemia time and graft outcomes. The results of the study demonstrate no significant change in the median match number of organ placement in liver or kidney transplantation. Changes in discard rates were varied amongst transplanted organs and there were noticeable changes in organ sharing with an increase in local allocation for kidney and liver and an ensuing decrease in regional and national distribution. There were no significant differences in the outcomes of livers and kidneys with low offer numbers compared with those with high offer numbers. Overall the study suggests a modest impact by DonorNet on organ placement and utilization, but a longer term study would need to be done to fully evaluate its impact.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/79141/1/j.1600-6143.2010.03036.x.pd
