Data science of stroke imaging and enlightenment of the penumbra.
Imaging protocols of acute ischemic stroke continue to hold significant uncertainties regarding patient selection for reperfusion therapy with thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy. Given that patient inclusion criteria can easily introduce biases that may be unaccounted for, the reproducibility and reliability of the patient screening method is of utmost importance in clinical trial design. The optimal imaging screening protocol for selection in targeted populations remains uncertain. Acute neuroimaging provides a snapshot in time of the brain parenchyma and vasculature. By identifying the at-risk but still viable penumbral tissue, imaging can help estimate the potential benefit of a reperfusion therapy in these patients. This paper provides a perspective about the assessment of the penumbral tissue in the context of acute stroke and reviews several neuroimaging models that have recently been developed to assess the penumbra in a more reliable fashion. The complexity and variability of imaging features and techniques used in stroke will ultimately require advanced data driven software tools to provide quantitative measures of risk/benefit of recanalization therapy and help aid in making the most favorable clinical decisions
El Management como práctica: una aproximación a la naturaleza del trabajo directivo
En el presente trabajo se realiza una reflexión sobre la naturaleza del trabajo directivo –management–, a la luz de los tres modos posibles de conocimiento: la teoría, la práctica y la técnica. Puntualmente, se analiza el trabajo de tres autores: Henry Mintzberg, Ikujiro Nonaka y Alasdair MacIntyre, con el fin de mostrar cómo la evolución del estudio teórico de esta disciplina ha ido evidenciando su carácter eminentemente práctico. Mintzberg aporta una excelente introducción al fenómeno, ya que combina muy bien la observación práctica con la reflexión sobre lo que hacen los realmente directivos. Nonaka, por su parte, resalta el dinamismo de la empresa: su capacidad de innovar, de crear y compartir conocimiento. Finalmente, MacIntyre reivindica la perspectiva aristotélica en el estudio de la vida organizacional, con su revitalización de la noción de práctica. Se concluye resaltando que concebir el trabajo directivo como una práctica abre paso a una teoría normativa de la acción y su influencia en las organizaciones.This article reflects on the nature of managerial work, which historically has been approached as a theory, a practice, or a technique. The work of three authors, Henry Mintzberg, Ikujiro Nonaka and Alasdair MacIntyre, is analyzed in order to show how the evolution of this discipline’s theoretical study demonstrates its eminently practical nature. Mintzberg provides an excellent introduction to the phenomenon, perceptively combining practical observation with reflection on what managers actually do. Nonaka, on the other hand, highlights the dynamism of the business firm and its ability to innovate, create and share knowledge. Finally, MacIntyre revives the Aristotelian perspective in the study of organizational life, revitalizing the idea of practice. We conclude by emphasizing that conceiving of managerial work as a practice implies the acceptance of a normative theory of organizations

Perfusion Angiography in Acute Ischemic Stroke
Visualization and quantification of blood flow are essential for the diagnosis and treatment evaluation of cerebrovascular diseases. For rapid imaging of the cerebrovasculature, digital subtraction angiography (DSA) remains the gold standard as it offers high spatial resolution. This paper lays out a methodological framework, named perfusion angiography, for the quantitative analysis and visualization of blood flow parameters from DSA images. The parameters, including cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral blood volume (CBV), mean transit time (MTT), time-to-peak (TTP), and Tmax, are computed using a bolus tracking method based on the deconvolution of the time-density curve on a pixel-by-pixel basis. The method is tested on 66 acute ischemic stroke patients treated with thrombectomy and/or tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and also evaluated on an estimation task with known ground truth. This novel imaging tool provides unique insights into flow mechanisms that cannot be observed directly in DSA sequences and might be used to evaluate the impact of endovascular interventions more precisely
Initial Hubble Diagram Results from the Nearby Supernova Factory
The use of Type Ia supernovae as distance indicators led to the discovery of
the accelerating expansion of the universe a decade ago. Now that large second
generation surveys have significantly increased the size and quality of the
high-redshift sample, the cosmological constraints are limited by the currently
available sample of ~50 cosmologically useful nearby supernovae. The Nearby
Supernova Factory addresses this problem by discovering nearby supernovae and
observing their spectrophotometric time development. Our data sample includes
over 2400 spectra from spectral timeseries of 185 supernovae. This talk
presents results from a portion of this sample including a Hubble diagram
(relative distance vs. redshift) and a description of some analyses using this

Computational fluid dynamics modeling of symptomatic intracranial atherosclerosis may predict risk of stroke recurrence.
BackgroundPatients with symptomatic intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS) of ≥ 70% luminal stenosis are at high risk of stroke recurrence. We aimed to evaluate the relationships between hemodynamics of ICAS revealed by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models and risk of stroke recurrence in this patient subset.MethodsPatients with a symptomatic ICAS lesion of 70-99% luminal stenosis were screened and enrolled in this study. CFD models were reconstructed based on baseline computed tomographic angiography (CTA) source images, to reveal hemodynamics of the qualifying symptomatic ICAS lesions. Change of pressures across a lesion was represented by the ratio of post- and pre-stenotic pressures. Change of shear strain rates (SSR) across a lesion was represented by the ratio of SSRs at the stenotic throat and proximal normal vessel segment, similar for the change of flow velocities. Patients were followed up for 1 year.ResultsOverall, 32 patients (median age 65; 59.4% males) were recruited. The median pressure, SSR and velocity ratios for the ICAS lesions were 0.40 (-2.46-0.79), 4.5 (2.2-20.6), and 7.4 (5.2-12.5), respectively. SSR ratio (hazard ratio [HR] 1.027; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.004-1.051; P = 0.023) and velocity ratio (HR 1.029; 95% CI, 1.002-1.056; P = 0.035) were significantly related to recurrent territorial ischemic stroke within 1 year by univariate Cox regression, respectively with the c-statistics of 0.776 (95% CI, 0.594-0.903; P = 0.014) and 0.776 (95% CI, 0.594-0.903; P = 0.002) in receiver operating characteristic analysis.ConclusionsHemodynamics of ICAS on CFD models reconstructed from routinely obtained CTA images may predict subsequent stroke recurrence in patients with a symptomatic ICAS lesion of 70-99% luminal stenosis
SkyMapper Southern Survey: First Data Release (DR1)
We present the first data release (DR1) of the SkyMapper Southern Survey, a
hemispheric survey carried out with the SkyMapper Telescope at Siding Spring
Observatory in Australia. Here, we present the survey strategy, data
processing, catalogue construction and database schema. The DR1 dataset
includes over 66,000 images from the Shallow Survey component, covering an area
of 17,200 deg in all six SkyMapper passbands , while the full area
covered by any passband exceeds 20,000 deg. The catalogues contain over 285
million unique astrophysical objects, complete to roughly 18 mag in all bands.
We compare our point-source photometry with PanSTARRS1 DR1 and note an
RMS scatter of 2%. The internal reproducibility of SkyMapper photometry is on
the order of 1%. Astrometric precision is better than 0.2 arcsec based on
comparison with Gaia DR1. We describe the end-user database, through which data
are presented to the world community, and provide some illustrative science

PESSTO monitoring of SN 2012hn: further heterogeneity among faint type I supernovae
We present optical and infrared monitoring data of SN 2012hn collected by the
Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey for Transient Objects (PESSTO). We show that SN
2012hn has a faint peak magnitude (MR ~ -15.7) and shows no hydrogen and no
clear evidence for helium in its spectral evolution. Instead, we detect
prominent Ca II lines at all epochs, which relates this transient to previously
described 'Ca-rich' or 'gap' transients. However, the photospheric spectra
(from -3 to +32 d with respect to peak) of SN 2012hn show a series of
absorption lines which are unique, and a red continuum that is likely intrinsic
rather than due to extinction. Lines of Ti II and Cr II are visible. This may
be a temperature effect, which could also explain the red photospheric colour.
A nebular spectrum at +150d shows prominent CaII, OI, CI and possibly MgI lines
which appear similar in strength to those displayed by core-collapse SNe. To
add to the puzzle, SN 2012hn is located at a projected distance of 6 kpc from
an E/S0 host and is not close to any obvious starforming region. Overall SN
2012hn resembles a group of faint H-poor SNe that have been discovered recently
and for which a convincing and consistent physical explanation is still
missing. They all appear to explode preferentially in remote locations offset
from a massive host galaxy with deep limits on any dwarf host galaxies,
favouring old progenitor systems. SN 2012hn adds heterogeneity to this sample
of objects. We discuss potential explosion channels including He-shell
detonations and double detonations of white dwarfs as well as peculiar

Very high-energy observations of the two high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects 1ES 1218+304 and H 1426+428
We present results of very-high-energy gamma-ray observations (E > 160 GeV)
of two high-frequency-peaked BL Lac (HBL) objects, 1ES 1218+304 and H 1426+428,
with the Solar Tower Atmospheric Cherenkov Effect Experiment (STACEE). Both
sources are very-high-energy gamma-ray emitters above 100 GeV, detected using
ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. STACEE observations of 1ES 1218+304 and H
1426+428 did not produce detections; we present 99% CL flux upper limits for
both sources, assuming spectral indices measured mostly at higher energies
