Lifting asymptotic degeneracies with the Mirror TBA
We describe a qualitative feature of the AdS_5 x S^5 string spectrum which is
not captured by the asymptotic Bethe ansatz. This is reflected by an enhanced
discrete symmetry in the asymptotic limit, whereby extra energy degeneracy
enters the spectrum. We discuss how finite size corrections should lift this
degeneracy, through both perturbative (Luscher) and non-perturbative
approaches (the Mirror TBA), and illustrate this explicitly on two such

Comparison of three rapid and easy bacterial DNA extraction methods for use with quantitative real-time PCR
The development of fast and easy on-site molecular detection and quantification methods for hazardous microbes on solid surfaces is desirable for several applications where specialised laboratory facilities are absent. The quantification of bacterial contamination necessitates the assessment of the efficiency of the used methodology as a whole, including the preceding steps of sampling and sample processing. We used quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qrtPCR) for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus to measure the recovery of DNA from defined numbers of bacterial cells that were subjected to three different DNA extraction methods: the QIAamp® DNA Mini Kit, Reischl et al.’s method and FTA® Elute. FTA® Elute significantly showed the highest median DNA extraction efficiency of 76.9% for E. coli and 108.9% for S. aureus. The Reischl et al. method and QIAamp® DNA Mini Kit inhibited the E. coli qrtPCR assay with a 10-fold decrease of detectable DNA. None of the methods inhibited the S. aureus qrtPCR assay. The FTA® Elute applicability was demonstrated with swab samples taken from the International Space Station (ISS) interior. Overall, the FTA® Elute method was found to be the most suitable to selected criteria in terms of rapidity, easiness of use, DNA extraction efficiency, toxicity, and transport and storage conditions
The low-energy limit of AdS(3)/CFT2 and its TBA
We investigate low-energy string excitations in AdS3 × S3 × T4. When the worldsheet is decompactified, the theory has gapless modes whose spectrum at low energies is determined by massless relativistic integrable S matrices of the type introduced by Al. B. Zamolodchikov. The S matrices are non-trivial only for excitations with identical worldsheet chirality, indicating that the low-energy theory is a CFT2. We construct a Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) for these excitations and show how the massless modes’ wrapping effects may be incorporated into the AdS3 spectral problem. Using the TBA and its associated Y-system, we determine the central charge of the low-energy CFT2 to be c = 6 from calculating the vacuum energy for antiperiodic fermions — with the vacuum energy being zero for periodic fermions in agreement with a supersymmetric theory — and find the energies of some excited states

TransmissionThere is evidence of a broad range of COVID-19 transmission mitigation measures in action; these were generally well received by participants, who reported high levels of compliance.There is evidence of competing requirements of COVID-19 specific and established construction health and safety regulations. For example, and as may be expected, social distancing proved problematic in situations where proximity working is required. Creative measures were used to mitigate risk where social distancingwasn’t feasible for example adapting tools and processes or using teams who cohabited. Whilst participants reported reductions in serious safety incidents on sites, the prevalence of minor incidents increased. For example, face coverings were cited as an inhibitor of effective communication between workers. The availability of remote working arrangements to some construction workers led tosome participants reporting the presence of an ‘us-them’ culture

The AdS 3 × S 3 × S 3 × S 1 worldsheet S matrix
We investigate type IIB strings on AdS 3 × S 3 × S 3 × S 1 with mixed Ramond–Ramond and Neveu–Schwarz–Neveu–Schwarz flux. By suitably gauge-fixing the closed string Green–Schwarz action of this theory, we derive the off-shell symmetry algebra and its representations. We use these to determine the non-perturbative worldsheet S matrix of fundamental excitations in the theory. The analysis involves both massive and massless modes in complete generality. The S matrix we find involves a number of phase factors, which in turn satisfy crossing equations that we also determine. We comment on the nature of the heaviest modes of the theory, but leave their identification either as composites or bound-states to a future investigation

Occupational cancer in Britain: Statistical methodology
An approach using the attributable fraction (AF) has been developed to estimate the current burden of occupational cancer in Britain. The AF combines the relative risk (RR) associated with exposure with the proportion exposed. For each cancer–exposure pairing, the RR is selected from key epidemiological literature such as an industry, or population-based study, meta-analysis or review. The CARcinogen EXposure (CAREX) database provides point estimates for the number of workers exposed to a range of carcinogens; alternative sources are national surveys such as the Labour Force Survey and Census of Employment. The number of workers exposed are split between high and low exposure levels matched to appropriate RRs from the literature. The relevant period for cancer development during which exposure occurred is defined as the risk exposure period (REP). Estimation of the numbers ever exposed over the REP takes into account the changes in the number of people employed in primary and manufacturing industry and service sectors in Britain where appropriate, and adjustment is made for staff turnover over the period and for life expectancy. National estimates of the population ever of working age during the REP are used for the proportion denominator. Strategies have been developed to combine exposure AFs correctly while avoiding double counting and minimising bias. The AFs are applied to national cancer deaths and registrations to obtain occupation-attributable cancer numbers. The methods are adaptable for other diseases and other geographies, and are also adaptable to more sophisticated modelling if better exposure and dose–response data are available
