Nonlinear optics with stationary pulses of light
We show that the recently demonstrated technique for generating stationary
pulses of light [Nature {\bf 426}, 638 (2003)] can be extended to localize
optical pulses in all three spatial dimensions in a resonant atomic medium.
This method can be used to dramatically enhance the nonlinear interaction
between weak optical pulses. In particular, we show that an efficient Kerr-like
interaction between two pulses can be implemented as a sequence of several
purely linear optical processes. The resulting process may enable coherent
interactions between single photon pulses.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
The Communication Library DIALOG for iFDAQ of the COMPASS Experiment
Modern experiments in high energy physics impose
great demands on the reliability, the efficiency, and the data rate
of Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ). This contribution focuses on
the development and deployment of the new communication library
DIALOG for the intelligent, FPGA-based Data Acquisition System
(iFDAQ) of the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The iFDAQ
utilizing a hardware event builder is designed to be able to readout
data at the maximum rate of the experiment. The DIALOG library is a
communication system both for distributed and mixed environments,
it provides a network transparent inter-process communication layer.
Using the high-performance and modern C++ framework Qt and its
Qt Network API, the DIALOG library presents an alternative to
the previously used DIM library. The DIALOG library was fully
incorporated to all processes in the iFDAQ during the run 2016.
From the software point of view, it might be considered as a
significant improvement of iFDAQ in comparison with the previous
run. To extend the possibilities of debugging, the online monitoring
of communication among processes via DIALOG GUI is a desirable
feature. In the paper, we present the DIALOG library from several
insights and discuss it in a detailed way. Moreover, the efficiency
measurement and comparison with the DIM library with respect to
the iFDAQ requirements is provided
The Fast Read-out System for the MAPMTs of COMPASS RICH-1
A fast readout system for the upgrade of the COMPASS RICH detector has been
developed and successfully used for data taking in 2006 and 2007. The new
readout system for the multi-anode PMTs in the central part of the photon
detector of the RICH is based on the high-sensitivity MAD4
preamplifier-discriminator and the dead-time free F1-TDC chip characterized by
high-resolution. The readout electronics has been designed taking into account
the high photon flux in the central part of the detector and the requirement to
run at high trigger rates of up to 100 kHz with negligible dead-time. The
system is designed as a very compact setup and is mounted directly behind the
multi-anode photomultipliers. The data are digitized on the frontend boards and
transferred via optical links to the readout system. The read-out electronics
system is described in detail together with its measured performances.Comment: Proceeding of RICH2007 Conference, Trieste, Oct. 2007. v2: minor

Fast photon detection for the COMPASS RICH detector
The COMPASS experiment at the SPS accelerator at CERN uses a large scale Ring
Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) to identify pions, kaons and protons in a
wide momentum range. For the data taking in 2006, the COMPASS RICH has been
upgraded in the central photon detection area (25% of the surface) with a new
technology to detect Cherenkov photons at very high count rates of several 10^6
per second and channel and a new dead-time free read-out system, which allows
trigger rates up to 100 kHz. The Cherenkov photons are detected by an array of
576 visible and ultra-violet sensitive multi-anode photomultipliers with 16
channels each. The upgraded detector showed an excellent performance during the
2006 data taking.Comment: Proceeding of the IPRD06 conference (Siena, Okt. 06
Tracking with heavily irradiated silicon detectors operated at cryogenic temperatures
In this work we show that a heavily irradiated double-sided silicon microstrip detector recovers its performance when operated at cryogenic temperatures. A DELPHI microstrip detector, irradiated to a fluence of p/cm, no longer operational at room temperature, cannot be distinguished from a non-irradiated one when operated at ~K. Besides confirming the previously observed `Lazarus effect' in single diodes, these results establish for the first time, the possibility of using standard silicon detectors for tracking applications in extremely demanding radiation environments
Search for the exotic Resonance in 340GeV/c -Nucleus Interactions
We report on a high statistics search for the resonance in
-nucleus collisions at 340GeV/c. No evidence for this resonance is
found in our data sample which contains 676000 candidates above
background. For the decay channel and the
kinematic range 0.150.9 we find a 3 upper limit for the
production cross section of 3.1 and 3.5 b per nucleon for reactions with
carbon and copper, respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, modification of ref. 43 and 4
Measurement of the Omega_c Lifetime
We present the measurement of the lifetime of the Omega_c we have performed
using three independent data samples from two different decay modes. Using a
Sigma- beam of 340 GeV/c we have obtained clean signals for the Omega_c
decaying into Xi- K- pi+ pi+ and Omega- pi+ pi- pi+, avoiding topological cuts
normally used in charm analysis. The short but measurable lifetime of the
Omega_c is demonstrated by a clear enhancement of the signals at short but
finite decay lengths. Using a continuous maximum likelihood method we
determined the lifetime to be tau(Omega_c) = 55 +13-11(stat) +18-23(syst) fs.
This makes the Omega_c the shortest living weakly decaying particle observed so
far. The short value of the lifetime confirms the predicted pattern of the
charmed baryon lifetimes and demonstrates that the strong interaction plays a
vital role in the lifetimes of charmed hadrons.Comment: 15 pages, including 7 figures; gzipped, uuencoded postscrip
