    Electron impact on K+: mechanisms for extreme ultraviolet submission

    A series of R-matrix calculations on K+ is used to derive electron excitation and ionization cross sections. The excitation cross section to the 4s and 3d levels leading to the K+ 60.1, 60.8 and 61.3nm emission lines shows poor agreement with the cross beam experiment of Zapesochny et al (1986, Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 90 1972 [Sov. Phys. JETP 63 1155]). Cross sections are also presented for exciting the 4p, 5s and 4d levels, the autoionizing 3s open-shell levels, and for ionization. It is shown how pseudoresonances in the calculated cross section can be eliminated by increasing the target basis.</p

    We report calculations of energy levels, radiative rates, collision strengths, and effective collision strengths for transitions among the lowest 25 levels of the n <= 5 configurations of He~II. The general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package (GRASP) and Dirac atomic R-matrix code (DARC) are adopted for the calculations. Radiative rates, oscillator strengths, and line strengths are reported for all electric dipole (E1), magnetic dipole (M1), electric quadrupole (E2), and magnetic quadrupole (M2) transitions among the 25 levels. Furthermore, collision strengths and effective collision strengths are listed for all 300 transitions among the above 25 levels over a wide energy (temperature) range up to 9 Ryd (10**5.4 K).     High Potential of a Transposon mPing as a Marker System in japonica × japonica Cross in Rice

    Although quantitative traits loci (QTL) analysis has been widely performed to isolate agronomically important genes, it has been difficult to obtain molecular markers between individuals with similar phenotypes (assortative mating). Recently, the miniature inverted-repeat transposable element mPing was shown to be active in the japonica strain Gimbozu EG4 where it had accumulated more than 1000 copies. In contrast, most other japonicas, including Nipponbare, have 50 or fewer mPing insertions in their genome. In this study we have exploited the polymorphism of mPing insertion sites to generate 150 PCR markers in a cross between the closely related japonicas, Nipponbare × Gimbozu (EG4). These new markers were distributed in genic regions of the whole genome and showed significantly higher polymorphism (150 of 183) than all other molecular markers tested including short sequence repeat markers (46 of 661). In addition, we performed QTL analysis with these markers using recombinant inbred lines derived from Nipponbare × Gimbozu EG4, and successfully mapped a locus involved in heading date on the short arm of chromosome 6. Moreover, we could easily map two novel loci involved in the culm length on the short arms of chromosomes 3 and 10
