Networks of Gratitude: Structures of Thanks and User Expectations in Workplace Appreciation Systems
Appreciation systems--platforms for users to exchange thanks and praise--are
becoming common in the workplace, where employees share appreciation, managers
are notified, and aggregate scores are sometimes made visible. Who do people
thank on these systems, and what do they expect from each other and their
managers? After introducing the design affordances of 13 appreciation systems,
we discuss a system we call Gratia, in use at a large multinational company for
over four years. Using logs of 422,000 appreciation messages and user surveys,
we explore the social dynamics of use and ask if use of the system addresses
the recognition problem. We find that while thanks is mostly exchanged among
employees at the same level and different parts of the company, addressing the
recognition problem, managers do not always act on that recognition in ways
that employees expect.Comment: in Tenth International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media, 201

Learning-Related Values in Young Children’s Storybooks: An Investigation in the United States, China, and Mexico
This research examined the prevalence of learning-related values in children’s storybooks in the United States, China, and Mexico. Storybooks ( N = 157) were randomly selected from government-recommended booklists in each country. Trained coders assessed the prevalence of learning-related beliefs (e.g., malleability of ability), motivated cognitions (e.g., achievement orientation), and behaviors (e.g., effort) in the storybooks. A set of MANOVAs revealed that Chinese (vs. American and Mexican) storybooks contained more instances of learning-related beliefs and behaviors. For example, Chinese storybooks included more instances of achievement-related goals and behaviors, relative to storybooks in the United States and Mexico. With the exception of achievement goals and helplessness, the prevalence of learning-related qualities was largely similar in the United States and Mexico
Towards a Semantic Gas Source Localization under Uncertainty
Towards a Semantic Gas Source Localization under Uncertainty.Communications in Computer and Information Science book series (CCIS, volume 855), doi:10.1007/978-3-319-91479-4_42This work addresses the problem of efficiently and coherently
locating a gas source in a domestic environment with a mobile
robot, meaning efficiently the coverage of the shortest distance as possible
and coherently the consideration of different gas sources explaining
the gas presence. The main contribution is the exploitation, for the
first time, of semantic relationships between the gases detected and the
objects present in the environment to face this challenging issue. Our
proposal also takes into account both the uncertainty inherent in the
gas classification and object recognition processes. These uncertainties
are combined through a probabilistic Bayesian framework to provide a
priority-ordered list of (previously observed) objects to check. Moreover
the proximity of the different candidates to the current robot location
is also considered by a cost function, which output is used for planning
the robot inspection path. We have conducted an initial demonstration
of the suitability of our gas source localization approach by simulating
this task within domestic environments for a variable number of objects,
and comparing it with an greedy approach.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional AndalucĂa Tech

High In-content InGaN layers synthesized by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy: growth conditions, strain relaxation and In incorporation kinetics
We report the interplay between In incorporation and strain relaxation
kinetics in high-In-content InxGa1-xN (x = 0.3) layers grown by plasma-assisted
molecular-beam epitaxy. For In mole fractions x = 0.13-0.48, best structural
and morphological quality is obtained under In excess conditions, at In
accumulation limit, and at a growth temperature where InGaN decomposition is
active. Under such conditions, in situ and ex situ analysis of the evolution of
the crystalline structure with the growth thickness points to an onset of
misfit relaxation after the growth of 40 nm, and a gradual relaxation during
more than 200 nm which results in an inhomogeneous strain distribution along
the growth axis. This process is associated with a compositional pulling
effect, i.e. indium incorporation is partially inhibited in presence of
compressive strain, resulting in a compositional gradient with increasing In
mole fraction towards the surface
Dynamic images to address conceptual nodes about mechanical waves: Example materials and preliminary results of the experimentation of the teacher training module IMAGONDE
In the framework of the 2002-03 project “Fisica per la Formazione Culturale - FORMazione Insegnanti” funded by Italy ministry of Education, a set of training materials, focused on mechanical waves, has been developed. The core
of the materials is represented by animated images purposely designed in order to: 1) address intrinsically dynamic aspects of one-dimensional impulses/waves propagation on a string; 2) have the trainees reflect upon students’ difficulties in reading/interpreting static images (as the ones which are featured in common textbooks)
and animations. In this paper we discuss example materials concerning transversal impulses on strings to address conceptual nodes such as: 1) configuration of the string at a given time and its abstract representation; 2) displacement vs. time graph of a string element and its abstract representation; 3) relationships between the two abstract representations; 4) modelization of mechanical wave propagation in one dimension. Moreover the results of the experimentation of the training materials in the framework of the Post Graduate School to Became Physics Teacher in Secondary Schools are presented and commented
