Mahathir's leadership communication for social change on Indian community in Malaysia: Indian Hindu spiritual values
This research focuses on Mahathir’s leadership communication in creating social changes among Indians in Malaysia. Various studies were conducted on leadership communication but researches which touches on the leadership communication
between a leader of a majority community (Malay) and his/her followers from the minority group (Indian) from the cultural perspective are limited. Therefore, this study investigates the leadership communication of Mahathir from the Indian perspective. The researcher interviewed Indians in Malaysia including leaders and commoners based on purposive sampling method. A total of 23 informants have been
recruited as the study informants. Data were collected through interviewing, notetaking and audio recording. Descriptive accounts of the Indians’ responses towards Mahathir’s leadership communication for social changes from the Indian perspective were explored and presented using the transformational leadership theory. Based on the thematic analysis, five themes were emerged to answer the aims of the study; Indians leadership communication conception, Mahathir’s leadership communication, the influence of Indian culture towards Mahathir’s leadership communication,
leadership communication for social change, responses to Mahathir’s leadership communication and the expectation of Indians towards leadership communication. Based on the findings of this study, a leadership communication model from the Indian perspective is developed which could be used as a reference in managing the Indians who are the minority community. This study provides an insight of leadership
communication towards bringing social change, particularly focusing on the relationship of a leader and his followers from the minority community
The Relationship between Perceived Teachers’ Self-disclosure and Out-ofclassroom Communication among Malaysian Undergraduates in a Private Institution of Higher Learning
This quantitative study was conducted to determine whether a significant relationship exists between perceived teachers’ self-disclosure and students’ out of classroom communication with teachers in a Malaysian private institution of higher learning. A survey consisting of two questionnaires, namely the Perceived Teacher’s Self-Disclosure scale designed by Cayanus and Martin (2008) as well as Knapp and Martin’s (2002) Out-of-Classroom Communication Scale were collected from 144 final year undergraduates from a Malaysian private institution of higher learning. Using the SPSS, the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, independent-samples t-test and one-way between-groups ANOVA with post-hoc tests were used to analyze the data. The findings indicated a positive relationship between the dimensions of amount and relevance in perceived teachers’ self-disclosure and students’ out of classroom communication. There was no significant difference recorded between gender, with perceived teachers’ self-disclosure and students’ out of classroom communication. Besides, there was also no significant difference recorded between age, with perceived teachers’ self-disclosure and students’ out of classroom communication. The study concludes that Malaysian undergraduates’ perceptions towards teachers’ self-disclosure influences the out of classroom communication with teachers
Exploring Mahathir’s Leadership Communication Attributes from Indian Community Perspective
Literatures proposed that culture does influence the success of leadership communication. Mahathir as the longest serving Prime Minister of Malaysia was criticised to be a leader who promotes the
betterment of the majority community that he represented and marginalised the Indians. Despite of that, the Indians in Malaysia showed advancement in various sectors including politics, economy and social.Therefore, this exploratory study aims to bridge the gap by investigating the attributes that link between Mahathir’s leadership communication and Indian community. Data were collected through a series of intensive interviews with 15 informants consists of Indian political, non-governmental organisation and community representatives. Based on the thematic analysis, two main attributes that strongly link to
Indian culture were identified: leadership communication conception (Sattava Guna) and characteristics of good leadership communication (Sattava characteristics). This study has contributed to enhance understanding about the leadership communication concept from the Indians’ perspective. It provides some insights on the Indian’s cultural conceptions of inter-ethnic leadership communication

Mahathir's leadership communication: exploring the Indians’ political and nongovernmental organisations experience
In general, there were many studies have been conducted analysing leadership communication from
the majority’s group but fewer studies were conducted from the minority’s perspective. Mahathir
was perceived as a leader who merely focused on the development of the majority group (Malay)
and marginalised the minority communal, including the Indians. Interestingly, despite his Ultra Malay
rhetoric, the Indians in Malaysia showed advancement in various sectors including politics,
economics and social. Therefore, this exploratory study aims to fill in the gap by investigating the
influence of Mahathir’s leadership communication from Indians political leaders and NGOs
perspective in Malaysia. The transformational leadership theory was used to investigate the
phenomena. In-depth interview was utilised to get an insight of the experiences of this Indians
communities on Mahathir’s leadership communication. Data were collected through a series of
intensive interviews with 12 informants consists of Malaysian based Indian political leaders and
representatives of non-governmental organisations. Thematic analysis was used to identify, analyse
and create themes from the data collected. Based on the analysis, three themes were identified;
characteristics of Mahathir’s leadership communication, Mahathir as the Indian community
transformer, and the expected leadership communication qualities of the Indians. This study has
contributed to enhance understanding about the impacts of leadership communication from the
minority community perspective. Further, it was found that the Indians are significantly affected by
Mahathir’s leadership communication

Komunikasi kepimpinan Mahathir Mohamad dari perspektif agama Hindu
Penyelidikan kualitatif ini bermatlamat untuk meneroka pengaruh komunikasi kepimpinan Mahathir
Mohamad dari sudut pandangan budaya masyarakat India di Malaysia. Mahathir dianggap sebagai
seorang pemimpin yang hanya memberi tumpuan kepada pembangunan masyarakat Melayu atau
masyarakat majoriti yang diwakilinya sehingga beliau dilabel sebagai ultra Melayu. Menariknya, walaupun
Mahathir Mohamad dikatakan mengetepikan masyarakat bukan bumiputera khususnya masyarakat India,
tetapi masyarakat India merekodkan pembangunan atau perubahan yang baik dalam pelbagai bidang.
Dalam pada itu, penyelidikan ini mengandaikan bahawa kemahiran komunikasi kepimpinan Mahathir
Mohamad mempengaruhi masyarakat India ke arah pembangunan di Malaysia. Budaya masyarakat India
yang ditunjangi oleh kepercayaan Hinduisme dipercayai menjadi nilai asas dalam proses komunikasi
kepimpinan Mahathir Mohamad dan masyarakat Hindu di Malaysia. Maka, penyelidikan ini
membincangkan tentang komunikasi kepimpinan Tun Mahathir Mohamad dari perspektif budaya India,
khususnya dari perspektif agama Hindu. Kaedah temubual mendalam digunakan untuk mengumpul data.
Seramai 23 informan telah ditemu bual untuk mengumpul pandangan mereka tentang pimpinan Mahathir
Mohamad. Informan penyelidikan dipilih melalui teknik persampelan bertujuan yang terdiri daripada ahli
politik berbangsa India, ahli badan bukan kerajaan, para akademik, ahli perniagaan dan masyarakat biasa.
Data dianalisa menggunakan kaedah analisis tematik dan tiga tema telah terbentuk iaitu definisi
komunikasi kepimpinan, ciri-ciri komunikasi kepimpinan yang berkesan dan fungsi komunikasi
kepimpinan. Hasil penyelidikan menunjukkan bahawa agama Hindu mempengaruhi persepsi masyarakat
Hindu terhadap komunikasi kepimpinan Mahathir. Penyelidikan ini menyumbang kepada pembentukan
dimensi baharu iaitu penyelidikan komunikasi kepimpinan dalam konteks budaya masyarakat India
Exploring Tun Mahathir’s Leadership Communication: Indian Cultural Perspective
This article aims to discuss Tun Mahathir’s leadership communication from the Indian cultural perspective.Hence, the lived experience of the Indians in Malaysia on the leadership communication of Tun Mahathir was explored.Data were collected through a series of in-depth interviews with 15 informants including Malaysianbased Indian political leaders and ordinary citizens of the community.Three main themes were identified to explain the analysis outcomes: Tun Mahathir’s leadership communication characteristics, the Indian cultural values that influence the perspectives of Indians towards Tun Mahathir’s leadership communication, and Indian community’s responses towards Mahathir’s policies. This finding contributes to a new dimension of leadership communication study from cultural perspective specifically the Indian culture which is a minority group in Malaysia. Furthermore, it was found that the Indian culture particularly the religious values influences Indians’ perception towards Tun Mahathir’s leadership communication. Secondly, it was found that a leader with good understanding of followers’ culture is able to bring development to the community.In addition, this paper also provides an insight to understand the leadership communication within the Indian community in Malaysia
Meneroka pengaruh komunikasi kepemimpinan terhadap kepuasan kerja dalam kalangan kakitangan di institusi pengajian tinggi swasta Malaysia
Penyelidikan ini meneroka pengaruh komunikasi kepimpinan terhadap kepuasan kerja dalam kalangan
kakitangan di institusi pengajian tinggi swasta di Malaysia. Kecenderungan untuk berhenti kerja dalam
kalangan ahli akademik di Malaysia semakin meningkat dan komunikasi kepemimpinan dikenal pasti
sebagai salah satu faktor utama yang menyumbang kepada kepuasan kerja di tempat kerja. Komunikasi
kepemimpinan berkesan dapat meningkatkan kepercayaan dan pemahaman antara pemimpin dengan
pengikut yang dapat memberi inspirasi kepada pengikut supaya sentiasa berusaha untuk mencapai
matlamat organisasi. Teori kepemimpinan transformasional membincangkan bahawa seorang pemimpin
yang memiliki kemahiran komunikasi kepemimpinan berkesan dapat menyumbang kepada pembentukan
budaya kerja atau persekitaran positif di dalam sebuah organisasi yang dapat memotivasi anggota
organisasi untuk maju dalam kerjaya mereka. Metodologi kualitatif digunakan untuk mengumpul data,
khususnya pandangan daripada ahli akademik mengenai pengaruh komunikasi kepemimpinan terhadap
kepuasan kerja. Data dikumpul melalui kaedah temu bual bersama dengan 22 informan. Berdasarkan hasil
analisis tematik, tiga tema dibentuk iaitu; amalan komunikasi kepemimpinan, harapan ahli akademik
terhadap komunikasi kepemimpinan, dan maklum balas anggota staf terhadap komunikasi
kepemimpinan. Dapatan kajian ini menyumbang kepada dimensi baru komunikasi kepemimpinan dalam
konteks pelbagai budaya, khususnya dalam konteks pendidikan tinggi di Malaysia. Penyelidikan ini
mendapati bahawa komunikasi kepemimpinan mempengaruhi kepuasan kerja dalam kalangan staf
akademik. Komunikasi kepimpinan jelas menyumbangkan kepada persekitaran kerja positif dalam
organisasi. Beberapa cadangan berasaskan perspektif teoritikal dan praktikal turut dikemukakan dalam
membina persekitaran komunikasi kepemimpinan yang kondusif di institusi pendidikan tinggi swasta
