Interruption of Medium-Voltage Direct-Currents by Seperation of Contact Elements in Mineral Oil Using an Ultra Fast Electro-Magnetic Actuator
The increasing usage of medium-voltage direct-current in upcoming electrical energy grid topologies requests novel solutions for MVDC switching. The interruption of direct-currents is accomplished by enforcing a current zero crossing by adequate means and preventing reignition due to the recovering dc voltage. This paper evaluates the rapid separation of the contact elements in mineral oil leading to a liquid flow around the contact elements and the switching arc. The energy turnover of dielectric liquids interacting with an electric arc is considerably higher leading to heavily increased arc voltages compared to dielectric gases. This paper confirms results of earlier publications and carries them further towards a possible usage in an MVDC switching or protection device. Thus a contact arrangement surrounded by mineral oil in combination with an ultra fast electro-magnetic actuator is introduced and performed measurements are discussed
Shakedown Analysis of Framed Structures: Strong Duality and Primal-dual Analysis
AbstractThe paper is aimed to illustrate the strong duality between the lower and upper bound formulations of shakedown analysis in a novel way. By the lower or upper bound theorem, shakedown analysis is a well-known direct method to evaluate the load carrying capacity of a structure subjected to cyclic loads. In the paper, the Hölder inequality is uniquely utilized to establish the upper bound formulation from the lower bound formulation. Accordingly, the strong duality between them is revealed by duality theorems. Following that, shakedown analysis is performed by the primal-dual algorithm provided by the computing tool MATLAB. Moreover, elastic-plastic analysis is also conducted for comparisons and validations using the commercial finite-element code ABAQUS. Finally, comparisons with good agreement validate the numerical results presented in the paper
Freeform Extrusion of High Solids Loading Ceramic Slurries, Part I: Extrusion Process Modeling
A novel solid freeform fabrication method has been developed for the manufacture of
ceramic-based components in an environmentally friendly fashion. The method is based on the
extrusion of ceramic slurries using water as the binding media. Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) is
currently being used as the part material and solids loading as high as 60 vol. % has been
achieved. This paper describes a manufacturing machine that has been developed for the
extrusion of high solids loading ceramic slurries. A critical component of the machine is the
deposition system, which consists of a syringe, a plunger, a ram actuated by a motor that forces
the plunger down to extrude material, and a load cell to measure the extrusion force. An
empirical, dynamic model of the ceramic extrusion process, where the input is the commanded
ram velocity and the output is the extrusion force, is developed. Several experiments are
conducted and empirical modeling techniques are utilized to construct the dynamic model. The
results demonstrate that the ceramic extrusion process has a very slow dynamic response, as
compared to other non-compressible fluids such as water. A substantial amount of variation
exists in the ceramic extrusion process, most notably in the transient dynamics, and a constant
ram velocity may either produce a relatively constant steady-state extrusion force or it may cause
the extrusion force to steadily increase until the ram motor skips. The ceramic extrusion process
is also subjected to significant disturbances such as air bubble release, which causes a dramatic
decrease in the extrusion force, and nozzle clogging, which causes the extrusion force to slowly
increase until the clog is released or the ram motor skips.Mechanical Engineerin
Freeform Extrusion of High Solids Loading Ceramic Slurries, Part II: Extrusion Process Control
Part I of this paper provided a detailed description of a novel fabrication machine for high solids
loading ceramic slurry extrusion and presented an empirical model of the ceramic extrusion
process, with ram velocity as the input and extrusion force as the output. A constant force is
desirable in freeform extrusion processes as it correlates with a constant material deposition rate
and, thus, good part quality. The experimental results in Part I demonstrated that a constant ram
velocity will produce a transient extrusion force. In some instances the extrusion force increased
until ram motor skipping occurred. Further, process disturbances, such as air bubble release and
nozzle clogging that cause sudden changes in extrusion force, were often present. In this paper a
feedback controller for the ceramic extrusion process is designed and experimentally
implemented. The controller intelligently adjusts the ram motor velocity to maintain a constant
extrusion force. Since there is tremendous variability in the extrusion process characteristics, an
on-off controller is utilized in this paper. Comparisons are made between parts fabricated with
and without the feedback control. It is demonstrated that the use of the feedback control reduces
the effect of process disturbances (i.e., air bubble release and nozzle clogging) and dramatically
improves part quality.Mechanical Engineerin
Aqueous-Based Extrusion Fabrication of Ceramics on Demand
Aqueous-Based Extrusion Fabrication is an additive manufacturing technique that
extrudes ceramic slurries of high solids loading layer by layer for part fabrication. The
material reservoir in a previously developed system has been modified to allow for
starting and stopping of the extrusion process on demand. Design pros and cons are
examined and a comparison between two material reservoir designs is made. Tests are
conducted to determine the optimal deposition parameters for starting and stopping the
extrudate on demand. The collected test data is used for the development of a deposition
strategy that improves material deposition consistency, including reduced material
buildup at sharp corners. Example parts are fabricated using the deposition strategy and
hardware design.Mechanical Engineerin
Robust Nonlinear Control of Brushless DC Motors in the Presence of Magnetic Saturation
A robust control law is derived and examined for a direct-drive robot arm driven by a brushless DC motor (BLDCM). The complete dynamics of the motor and its interaction with the robot arm are accounted for. This is important, since in a direct-drive servo system the torque generated by the motor is directly transmitted to the load. Effects of magnetic saturation as well as reluctance variations are accounted for, in order to ensure accuracy. The effectiveness of the method is examined through computer simulations. The computational complexity of the overall control scheme is such that it can be readily used for real-time contro
Measurement of Electric Conductivity of Hot Gas in a SF6-circuit Breaker Interrupting Fault Currents
The realization of a new measurement method to determine electric conductivity of hot SF6-gas during interruption fault currents in an original self-blast circuit breaker is presented. The method is based on evaluation of phase shift between sinusoidal kHz-high voltage and current, applied on a sensor. This needs a kHz-resonance voltage generator and adapted sensors as a part of an electromagnetic shielded measurement system to determine time dependent electric conductivity with high resolution
Robust Nonlinear Control of Brushless DC Motors for Direct-Drive Robotic Applications
The control problem associated with brushless DC motors (BLDCMs) for direct-drive robotic applications is considered. In order to guarantee the high-performance operation of BLDCMs in such applications, the effects of reluctance variations and magnetic saturation are accounted for in the model. Such a BLDCM model constitutes a highly coupled and nonlinear dynamic system. Using the transformation theory of nonlinear systems, a feedback control law, which is shown to compensate for the system nonlinearities, is derived. Conditions under which such a control law is possible are presented. The need for the derivation of explicit commutation strategies is eliminated, resulting in reduction of the computations involved. To guarantee the high-performance operation of the system under substantial uncertainties, a robust control law is derived and appended to the overall control structure. The inclusion of the robust controller results in good tracking performance when there are modeling and measurement errors and payload uncertainties. The efficacy of the overall control law is investigated by considering a single-link direct-drive arm actuated by a BLDCM
Prenatal Lead Exposure Risk Assessment by Vermont Maternity Care Providers
Introduction. One percent of women of childbearing age in the U.S. have blood lead levels ≥ 5 ug/dL, which are associated with maternal hypertension during pregnancy, neural tube and cardiac defects in infants, low birth weight, prematurity, and spontaneous abortion. It is unknown whether obstetrics providers in Vermont are screening their pregnant patients for lead levels and educating them on lead exposure risks.
Objective. To gain an understanding of current lead screening practices in Vermont and issue recommendations for disseminating lead screening information.
Methods. We developed and e-mailed a survey to practicing OB/GYN physicians, maternity care focused family medicine physicians, nurse midwives, and professional midwives. The survey assessed current screening practices for lead exposure in their pregnant patients, interest in receiving statewide guidelines, and guideline dissemination preferences.
Results. Of the 41 respondents, 12% currently conduct risk assessments for lead exposure with all of their pregnant patients. Fifty four percent of maternity providers give all of their patients educational materials about lead exposure and risk of toxicity. Seventy one percent of maternity providers think that having guidelines provided by the Vermont Department of Health would encourage them to begin or continue lead exposure screening. The two preferred methods of communicating guidelines to physicians were grand rounds and email whereas non-physician providers preferred email and webinar.
Discussion. The majority of pregnant patients in Vermont are not properly assessed or educated about lead risks. However, there is interest in having statewide standardized lead risk assessment guidelines, with dissemination preferences differing by provider type.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1248/thumbnail.jp

Introduction to and Screening Visit Results of the Multicenter Pediatric Crohn's Disease Growth Study.
BackgroundStatural growth impairment is more common in males with Crohn's disease (CD). We assessed sex differences in height Z score differences and bone age (BA) Z scores and characterized age of menarche in a novel contemporary cohort of pediatric CD patients undergoing screening for enrollment in the multicenter longitudinal Growth Study.MethodsCrohn's disease patients (females with chronological age [CA] 5 years and older and younger than 14 years; males with CA 6 years and older and younger than 16 years) participated in a screening visit for the Growth Study. Height BA-Z scores are height Z scores calculated based on BA. Height CA-Z scores are height Z scores calculated based on CA. The height Z score difference equals height CA-Z score minus height BA-Z score.ResultsOne hundred seventy-one patients (60% male) qualified for this analysis. Mean CA was 12.2 years. Mean height CA-Z score was -0.4, and mean height BA-Z score was 0.4 in females. Mean height CA-Z score was -0.1, and mean height BA-Z score was 0.2 in males. The absolute value of the mean height Z score difference was significantly greater in females (0.8) than males (0.3; P = 0.005). The mean BA-Z score in females (-1.0) was significantly lower than in males (-0.2; P = 0.002). The median CA at menarche was 13.6 (95% CI, 12.6-14.6) years.ConclusionsOur screening visit data suggest that standardized height gain is lower in males with skeletal maturation and delayed puberty is common in females in CD. We are investigating these findings in the ongoing Growth Study
