    Hawking Radiation from Universal Horizons

The persistence of a suitable notion of black hole thermodynamics in Lorentz breaking theories of gravity is not only a non-trivial consistency test for such theories, it is also an interesting investigation {\em per se}, as it might help us identifying the crucial features at the root of these surprising laws governing such purely gravitational objects. In past investigations, controversial findings were presented in this sense. With the aim of settling this issue, we present here two complementary derivations of Hawking radiation in geometries endowed with universal horizons: a novel feature of back holes in Lorentz breaking theories of gravity which reproduces several properties normally characterizing Killing horizons. We find that both the derivations agree on the fact that the Hawking temperature associated to these geometries is set by the generalized universal horizon peeling surface gravity, as required for consistency with extant derivations of the first law of thermodynamics for these black holes. We shall also comment on the compatibility of our results with previous alternative derivations and on their significance for the survival of the generalized second law of black hole thermodynamics in Lorentz breaking theories of gravity

Fried potatoes: Impact of prolonged frying in monounsaturated oils

Fresh potatoes were intermittently deep-fried up to recommended limits (175 °C, 8 h/day, 28 h) in extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), peanut oil (PO) and canola oil (CO), and compared for diverse chemical components and sensorial attributes, aiming to quantify the impact of prolonged frying on potatoes nutrients, and the potential alterations resulting from the use of different monounsaturated-rich oils. Independently of oil type, its degradation promotes time-dependent losses of important potato nutrients, as vitamin C. Regarding the monounsaturated-rich oils tested, potatoes fried in CO had more equilibrated fatty acid profiles, but higher amounts of aldehydes derived from PUFA oxidation, while in EVOO were enriched with phenolic compounds. Acrylamide amounts were not affected by oil type or frying hours. Sensory degradation was gradually perceived by the panellists, except in PO. Prolonged frying should not be studied only on the basis of oil degradation because, even if within regulated limits, it induces loss of important food compounds. The authors acknowledge the financial support from PRODER (Contract n° 53988), co-financed by FAEDER, and from project UID/QUI/50006/2013 – POCI/01/0145/FEDER/007265 with financial support from FCT/MEC through national funds, co-financed by FEDER, under the Partnership Agreement PT2020 and the PhD Grant—SFRH/BD/82285/2011 attributed to Carla S.P.

Population structure of Atlantic swordfish (Xiphias gladius L. 1758) (Teleostea, Xiphiidae) using mitochondrial DNA analysis: implications for fisheries management

Recent studies on Atlantic swordfish (Xiphias gladius L. 1758) genetic structure have demonstrated significant heterogeneity but the precise boundary between populations remains to be identified. In this context, genetic diversity was investigated by PCR–RFLP analysis at the control region of mitochondrial DNA (D–loop) from 274 swordfish specimens collected from five different areas of the Atlantic Ocean. The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed that genetic variation was mainly due to differences within rather than between the studied areas. Additionally, the phylogenetic analysis did not show evident relationships among haplotypes from all areas. However, low but significant FST values were recorded when comparing Equatorial samples with those from the north central and north tropical Atlantic. These results do not support a need for changing the current management boundary for the Atlantic fishery. An X-ray Atlas of Groups of Galaxies

A search was conducted for a hot intragroup medium in 109 low-redshift galaxy groups observed with the ROSAT PSPC. Evidence for diffuse, extended X-ray emission is found in at least 61 groups. Approximately one-third of these detections have not been previously reported in the literature. Most of the groups are detected out to less than half of the virial radius with ROSAT. Although some spiral-rich groups do contain an intragroup medium, diffuse emission is restricted to groups that contain at least one early-type galaxy.Comment: 39 pages, 12 figures, to appear in The Astrophysical Journal Sup

It aimed to , with the development of two experiments : the first , to evaluate the performance of pacam? larvae submitted to two aquarium colors and two light levels and second , evaluate performance, behavior and skin pigmentation pacam? of juvenile Lophiosilurusalexandri subjected to different levels of brightness .In the first experiment, conducted for 25 days, they were used in 1200 larvae distributed in 4 treatments: White aquarium with 0 lux, white tank with 88 Lux, black tank with 0 lux and black tank with 88 Lux. For the second experiment was conducted for 75 days, they were used 160 pacam? juveniles subjected to 4 luminosities: 0 lux, 218 lux, 278 lux and 458 lux. In both experiments the animals were fed four times a day in photoperiod environment with 12 hour of light and 12 hours of dark and constant aeration. In the first experiment, it is indicated for post larvae pacam?s growing use of white and luminosities aquariums between 0 and 88 lux not affect fish performance. In the second experiment, the different luminosities not interfere in pigmentation, growth and kept the low cortisol levels. But it recommends the pacam? of juvenile culture in no light environment because it reduces feed intake and feed conversion favors, which are desirable characteristics to production
