Strong increase in the intensity of the peaks of excited magneto-exciton (ME) states in the photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra recorded for the ground heavy-hole magneto-excitons (of the 1sHH type) has been found in a GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice in strong magnetic field B applied normal to the sample layers. While varying B the intensities of the PLE peaks have been measured as functions of energy separation ΔE\Delta E between excited ME peaks and the ground state of the system. The resonance profiles have been found to have maxima at ΔEmax\Delta E_{\rm max} close to the energy of the GaAs LO-phonon. However, the value of ΔEmax\Delta E_{\rm max} depends on quantum numbers of the excited ME state. The revealed very low quantum efficiency of the investigated sample allows us to ascribe the observed resonance to the enhancement of the non-radiative magneto-exciton relaxation rate arising due to LO-phonon emission. The presented theoretical model, being in a good agreement with experimental observations, provides a method to extract 1sHH magneto-exciton ``in-plane" dispersion from the dependence of ΔEmax\Delta E_{\rm max} on the excited ME state quantum numbers.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

Aerospace, manufacturing, and shipbuilding industries strive to enhance their competitiveness by optimizing material utilization and improving production processes. The investment casting process offers the capability to fabricate intricate and precise components using a diverse range of alloys. However, this method is not without its drawbacks, including high manufacturing costs and a significant rate of defective castings, which can reach up to 30 %. These defects primarily arise from the stresses imposed on the wax patterns and ceramic molds, leading to their distortion. To address this issue, efforts have been made to reduce stress by employing compacted wax powders for the production of investment patterns. However, stress relaxation in the wax patterns remains a concern as it can result in elastic deformation of the compacted material and subsequent alterations in the final product dimensions. To mitigate this issue, a series of tests were conducted with the objective of studying stress relaxation under constant compression strain, as described by the Kohlrausch equation. The obtained results provide valuable insights that enable the prediction of the ultimate dimensions of patterns created using different grades of wax.

Diffusion-induced vortex filament instability in 3-dimensional excitable media

We studied the stability of linear vortex filaments in 3-dimensional (3D) excitable media, using both analytical and numerical methods. We found an intrinsic 3D instability of vortex filaments that is diffusion-induced, and is due to the slower diffusion of the inhibitor. This instability can result either in a single helical filament or in chaotic scroll breakup, depending on the specific kinetic model. When the 2-dimensional dynamics were in the chaotic regime, filament instability occurred via on-off intermittency, a failure of chaos synchronization in the third dimension.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to appear in PRL (September, 1999

Practical free-space quantum key distribution over 1 km

A working free-space quantum key distribution (QKD) system has been developed and tested over an outdoor optical path of ~1 km at Los Alamos National Laboratory under nighttime conditions. Results show that QKD can provide secure real-time key distribution between parties who have a need to communicate secretly. Finally, we examine the feasibility of surface to satellite QKD.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables. Submitted to Physics Review Letters, May 199

Results on K+K^+ and K0K^0 meson production in 4496^{96}_{44}Ru + 4496^{96}_{44}Ru and 4096^{96}_{40}Zr + 4096^{96}_{40}Zr collisions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.528AA GeV, measured with the FOPI detector at GSI-Darmstadt, are investigated as a possible probe of isospin effects in high density nuclear matter. The measured double ratio (K+/K0K^+/K^0)Ru_{Ru}/(K+/K0K^+/K^0)Zr_{Zr} is compared to the predictions of a thermal model and a Relativistic Mean Field transport model using two different collision scenarios and under different assumptions on the stiffness of the symmetry energy. We find a good agreement with the thermal model prediction and the assumption of a soft symmetry energy for infinite nuclear matter while more realistic transport simulations of the collisions show a similar agreement with the data but also exhibit a reduced sensitivity to the symmetry term.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. accepted for publication in Phys. Abundance of Delta Resonances in 58Ni+58Ni Collisions between 1 and 2 AGeV

Charged pion spectra measured in 58Ni-58Ni collisions at 1.06, 1.45 and 1.93 AGeV are interpreted in terms of a thermal model including the decay of Delta resonances. The transverse momentum spectra of pions are well reproduced by adding the pions originating from the Delta-resonance decay to the component of thermal pions, deduced from the high transverse momentum part of the pion spectra. About 10 and 18% of the nucleons are excited to Delta states at freeze-out for beam energies of 1 and 2 AGeV, respectively.Comment: 14 pages, LaTeX with 3 included figures; submitted to Physics Letters

Experimental observation of topological Fermi arcs in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2

Weyl semimetal is a new quantum state of matter [1-12] hosting the condensed matter physics counterpart of relativisticWeyl fermion [13] originally introduced in high energy physics. The Weyl semimetal realized in the TaAs class features multiple Fermi arcs arising from topological surface states [10, 11, 14-16] and exhibits novel quantum phenomena, e.g., chiral anomaly induced negative mag-netoresistance [17-19] and possibly emergent supersymmetry [20]. Recently it was proposed theoretically that a new type (type-II) of Weyl fermion [21], which does not have counterpart in high energy physics due to the breaking of Lorentz invariance, can emerge as topologically-protected touching between electron and hole pockets. Here, we report direct spectroscopic evidence of topological Fermi arcs in the predicted type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2 [22-24]. The topological surface states are confirmed by directly observing the surface states using bulk-and surface-sensitive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and the quasi-particle interference (QPI) pattern between the two putative Fermi arcs in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Our work establishes MoTe2 as the first experimental realization of type-II Weyl semimetal, and opens up new opportunities for probing novel phenomena such as exotic magneto-transport [21] in type-II Weyl semimetals.Comment: submitted on 01/29/2016. Effect of noise on coupled chaotic systems

    Get PDF
Effect of noise in inducing order on various chaotically evolving systems is reviewed, with special emphasis on systems consisting of coupled chaotic elements. In many situations it is observed that the uncoupled elements when driven by identical noise, show synchronization phenomena where chaotic trajectories exponentially converge towards a single noisy trajectory, independent of the initial conditions. In a random neural network, with infinite range coupling, chaos is suppressed due to noise and the system evolves towards a fixed point. Spatiotemporal stochastic resonance phenomenon has been observed in a square array of coupled threshold devices where a temporal characteristic of the system resonates at a given noise strength. In a chaotically evolving coupled map lattice with logistic map as local dynamics and driven by identical noise at each site, we report that the number of structures (a structure is a group of neighbouring lattice sites for whom values of the variable follow certain predefined pattern) follow a power-law decay with the length of the structure. An interesting phenomenon, which we call stochastic coherence, is also reported in which the abundance and lifetimes of these structures show characteristic peaks at some intermediate noise strength.Comment: 21 page LaTeX file for text, 5 Postscript files for figure

Divergence of a genomic island leads to the evolution of melanization in a halophyte root fungus

AbstractUnderstanding how organisms adapt to extreme living conditions is central to evolutionary biology. Dark septate endophytes (DSEs) constitute an important component of the root mycobiome and they are often able to alleviate host abiotic stresses. Here, we investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial association between the DSE Laburnicola rhizohalophila and its host, the native halophyte Suaeda salsa, using population genomics. Based on genome-wide Fst (pairwise fixation index) and Vst analyses, which compared the variance in allele frequencies of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and copy number variants (CNVs), respectively, we found a high level of genetic differentiation between two populations. CNV patterns revealed population-specific expansions and contractions. Interestingly, we identified a ~20 kbp genomic island of high divergence with a strong sign of positive selection. This region contains a melanin-biosynthetic polyketide synthase gene cluster linked to six additional genes likely involved in biosynthesis, membrane trafficking, regulation, and localization of melanin. Differences in growth yield and melanin biosynthesis between the two populations grown under 2% NaCl stress suggested that this genomic island contributes to the observed differences in melanin accumulation. Our findings provide a better understanding of the genetic and evolutionary mechanisms underlying the adaptation to saline conditions of the L. rhizohalophila–S. salsa symbiosis.</jats:p

    Isospin-tracing: A probe of non-equilibrium in central heavy-ion collisions

Four different combinations of 4496^{96}_{44}Ru and 4096^{96}_{40}Zr nuclei, both as projectile and target, were investigated at the same bombarding energy of 400AA MeV using a 4π4 \pi detector. The degree of isospin mixing between projectile and target nucleons is mapped across a large portion of the phase space using two different isospin-tracer observables, the number of measured protons and the t/3He{\rm t}/^{3}{\rm He} yield ratio. The experimental results show that the global equilibrium is not reached even in the most central collisions. Quantitative measures of stopping and mixing are extracted from the data. They are found to exhibit a quite strong sensitivity to the in-medium (n,n) cross section used in microscopic transport calculations.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 3 figures (ps files), submitted to Phys.
