Education in the Empty Quarter: How Have We Fared?
Garreau (1981) used the Arabic term Rub ‘al Khali, or Empty Quarter, to label the Intermountain West portion of the United States. In Saudi Arabia, the Empty Quarter is a large, dry, and relatively unpopulated area with a wealth of energy resources not unlike the Intermountain West. Garreau described changes in the area that were associated with changes in commerce and industry during the 20th century, particularly with respect to mining ventures and the discovery of oil and natural gas in the region. Although Garreau discussed many ways that these changes impacted the people and environment, he did not discuss the actual impact, or predicted impact on the education of children and youth in the region. The purpose of this article is to examine the impact of these changes on the functioning of schools in the Empty Quarter and to propose considerations for improving educational services in the region
Correlation of cosmic-ray intensity and solar activity
The present International Geophysical Year was chosen to include the most likely period of maximum activity of the sun. It is probably too early to tell whether or not the maximum of the current cycle has yet been reached, but it is already certain that the yearly average of the Zurich sunspot numbers for 1957 is much higher than ever before observed.(1) It is therefore of interest to see what has been the effect on cosmic rays
Correlation of cosmic-ray ionization measurements at high altitudes, at sea level, and neutron intensities at mountain tops
Although fluctuations in cosmic rays have been measured at sea level and high altitudes for a number of years, no serious attempt seems to have been made to correlate the two. As a result of a rather long series of balloon flights in the summer of 1951 it now becomes possible to correlate ionization measurements at high and low altitudes. Recent neutron intensity measurements during the same period by Simpson et al. permit a further comparison with this component. There seems to be a good correlation, during this period of observation, between the fluctuations as measured in (1) the ionization at 70,000 ft over North Dakota, (2) the meson component at Cheltenham, Maryland, (3) the meson component at the geomagnetic equator, and (4) the neutron component at mountain tops in Colorado and New Mexico
Evolution of plasma turbulence excited with particle beams
Particles ejected from the Sun that stream through the surrounding plasma of
the solar wind are causing instabilities. These generate wavemodes in a certain
frequency range especially within shock regions, where particles are
accelerated. The aim of this paper is to investigate of amplified Alfvenic
wavemodes in driven incompressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. Results of
different heliospheric scenarios from isotropic and anisotropic plasmas, as
well as turbulence near the critical balance are shown. The energy transport of
the amplified wavemode is governed by the mechanisms of diffusion, convection
and dissipation of energy in wavenumber space. The strength of these effects
varies with energy and wavenumber of the mode in question. Two-dimensional
energy spectra of spherical k-space integration that permit detailed insight
into the parallel and perpendicular development are presented. The evolution of
energy injected through driving shows a strong energy transfer to perpendicular
wavemodes. The main process at parallel wavemodes is the dissipation of energy
in wavenumber space. The generation of higher harmonics along the parallel
wavenumber axis is observed. We find evidence for a critical balance in our
simulations.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

A complex network approach to structural inequality of educational deprivation in a Latin American country
To guarantee the human right to education established by the fourth UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goal, a deep understanding of a big set of non-linear relationships at different scales is need it, as well as to know how they impact on learning outcomes. In doing so, current methods do not provide enough evidence about interactions and, for this reason, some researchers have proposed to model education as a complex system for considering all interactions at individual level, as well as using computer simulation and network analysis to provide a comprehensive look at the educational processes, as well as to predict the outcomes of different public policies.
The highlight of this paper is modeling the structure of the inequality of a national educational system as a complex network from learning outcomes and socio-economic, ethnicity, rurality and type of school funding, for providing a better understanding and measuring of the educational gaps. This new approach might help to integrate insights improving the theoretical framework, as well as to provide valuable information about non-trivial relationships between educational and non-educational variables in order to help policymakers to implement effective solutions for the educational challenge of ensuring inclusive and equitable education.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
The T2K ND280 Off-Axis Pi-Zero Detector
The Pi-Zero detector (P{\O}D) is one of the subdetectors that makes up the
off-axis near detector for the Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) long baseline neutrino
experiment. The primary goal for the P{\O}D is to measure the relevant cross
sections for neutrino interactions that generate pi-zero's, especially the
cross section for neutral current pi-zero interactions, which are one of the
dominant sources of background to the electron neutrino appearance signal in
T2K. The P{\O}D is composed of layers of plastic scintillator alternating with
water bags and brass sheets or lead sheets and is one of the first detectors to
use Multi-Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs) on a large scale.Comment: 17 pages, submitted to NIM
