    Nuclear transport models can reproduce charged-particle-inclusive measurements but are not strongly constrained by them

    Nuclear transport models are important tools for interpretation of many heavy-ion experiments and are essential in efforts to probe the nuclear equation of state. In order to fulfill these roles, the model predictions should at least agree with observed single-particle-inclusive momentum spectra; however, this agreement has recently been questioned. The present work compares the Vlasov-Uehling-Uhlenbeck model to data for mass-symmetric systems ranging from 12C+12C to 139La+139La, and we find good agreement within experimental uncertainties at 0.4A and 0.8A GeV. For currently available data, these uncertainties are too large to permit effective nucleon-nucleon scattering cross sections in the nuclear medium to be extracted at a useful level of precision

    BIM AUTOMATION: ADVANCED MODELING GENERATIVE PROCESS for COMPLEX STRUCTURES

    The new paradigm of the complexity of modern and historic structures, which are characterised by complex forms, morphological and typological variables, is one of the greatest challenges for building information modelling (BIM). Generation of complex parametric models needs new scientific knowledge concerning new digital technologies. These elements are helpful to store a vast quantity of information during the life cycle of buildings (LCB). The latest developments of parametric applications do not provide advanced tools, resulting in time-consuming work for the generation of models. This paper presents a method capable of processing and creating complex parametric Building Information Models (BIM) with Non-Uniform to NURBS) with multiple levels of details (Mixed and ReverseLoD) based on accurate 3D photogrammetric and laser scanning surveys. Complex 3D elements are converted into parametric BIM software and finite element applications (BIM to FEA) using specific exchange formats and new modelling tools. The proposed approach has been applied to different case studies: the BIM of modern structure for the courtyard of West Block on Parliament Hill in Ottawa (Ontario) and the BIM of Masegra Castel in Sondrio (Italy), encouraging the dissemination and interaction of scientific results without losing information during the generative process

    First video documented presence of Mediterranean monk seal in Southern Apulia (Italy)

    Sightings of Endangered monk seal (Monachus monachus) specimens have been increasingly reported along the coasts of its historic Mediterranean distribution over the last two decades, even from countries where the species was considered extinct for about half a century. These encounters have been documented and verified particularly along the coasts of the Adriatic-Ionian basin. The activities carried out in Salento (Southern Apulia, Italy) since 2012, engaging with local protected areas, authorities and different stakeholders (organizations, museums, universities, fishermen’s cooperatives and tourism sectors enterprises) allowed us to record and verify 10 monk seal sightings (from 2009 to 2014) in the area. However, the last sighting with photographic documentation dates back to 1973. In June 2017, after six years of monitoring and awareness of the territory, immediately after the sighting, we received a video evidence of such presence. The footage, and the resulting interview with the witnesses, documented the presence of a Mediterranean monk seal’s specimen, about 2 meters in length, along the coast of Tricase (Lecce, Apulia). This new event has a remarkable importance to the hypothesis that Salento and the Adriatic-Ionian basin might play an important role in the overall conservation of the specie

    VIRTUAL MUSEUMS AS A MEANS FOR PROMOTION AND ENHANCEMENT OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

    Abstract. The use of virtual reality and ICT in the museum context provides a new key to understand and promote Cultural Heritage: thanks to these technologies the user has the opportunity to experience without the need to come into contact with the real objects. For the museum institutions VR and ICT are a valuable tool that allows them to perform different cultural tasks, addressing the public in a much more effective way than has previously been possible. Especially through VR, it is possible to reconstruct the original context of the artworks through the interconnection of contents: the virtual visitor, while viewing the artwork, can consult useful contents for the learning process. Another revolutionary element introduced by the new technologies is linked to the possibility of creating virtual exhibitions through which it is possible to exhibit works that are not accessible or not visible. These reflections and these theoretical principles were the basis for the development of the project proposal presented in these pages, that was born as a collaboration between the R3D Lab of the Museo della Rappresentazione of University of Catania and the CIMS Lab of Carleton University, Ottawa. It consists in the creation of a virtual museum, the Timeless Museum, in order to create an educational experience, able to make the users reflect on topics such as the value of history, the sense of beauty, the relationship with our past and our future, the protection and transmission to future generations of the artistic heritage we have.</p

    Phonon-Assisted Photoluminescence in a Spherical Nanocrystal

    Using the matrix density in the representation of path integrals for an electron, the multiphoton nonlinear absorption light coefficient in the second order of interaction energy with polar optical phonons is derived. This coefficient describes any electron interaction mechanism with phonons. From the interaction mechanism, the main role is played by dimensional resonance when the electron continuously absorbs energy from the field as a result of synchronizing its oscillation with the field. This dimensional resonance is possible when the frequency characterizing the laser field is a multiple of the phonon frequency. Whether a photon is absorbed or emitted, the initial level from where the transition occurs defines the temperature dependence. The absorption spectrum has the form of stripes whose intensity depends on the resonance character. The most pronounced absorption is at the triple resonance, where values of radiation and oscillatory and optical phonon frequencies are equal

    Given a spacelike 2-surface Σ\Sigma in a spacetime NN and a constant future timelike unit vector T0T_0 in R3,1\R^{3,1}, we derive upper and lower estimates of Wang-Yau quasilocal energy E(Σ,X,T0)E(\Sigma, X, T_0) for a given isometric embedding XX of Σ\Sigma into a flat 3-slice in R3,1\R^{3,1}. The quantity E(Σ,X,T0) E(\Sigma, X, T_0) itself depends on the choice of XX, however the infimum of E(Σ,X,T0) E(\Sigma, X, T_0) over T0 T_0 does not. In particular, when Σ\Sigma lies in a time symmetric 3-slice in NN and has nonnegative Brown-York quasilocal mass \mby(\Sigma), our estimates show that infT0E(Σ,X,T0)\inf\limits_{T_0}E(\Sigma, X, T_0) equals \mby (\Sigma). We also study the spatial limit of infT0E(Sr,Xr,T0) \inf\limits_{T_0}E(S_r,X_r,T_0), where SrS_r is a large coordinate sphere in a fixed end of an asymptotically flat initial data set (M,g,p)(M, g, p) and XrX_r is an isometric embeddings of SrS_r into R3R3,1\mathbb{R}^3 \subset \mathbb{R}^{3,1}. We show that if (M,g,p)(M, g, p) has future timelike ADM energy-momentum, then limrinfT0E(Sr,Xr,T0)\lim\limits_{r\to\infty}\inf\limits_{T_0}E(S_r,X_r,T_0) equals the ADM mass of (M,g,p)(M, g, p).Comment: 17 page

    Discontinuous Predicates as Partial Deletion in Cantonese

    Providing novel evidence from discontinuous predicates in Cantonese, this paper argues that partial deletion applies to the word level. A number of disyllabic verbs in Cantonese may appear as discontinuous strings where the two syllables are separated by suffixes and/or phrasal elements. We propose that their derivation involves a conspiracy of multiple operations in Narrow Syntax and in the Phonological Form (PF): (i) verb movement in Narrow Syntax creates copies; (ii) affixes induce a PF syllable deletion rule on the higher copy; (iii) partial Copy Deletion applies to the lower copy. Consequently, partial deletion not only applies to phrasal constituents (Fanselow and Cavar 2002), but also to words/heads. We also maintain a relatively conservative understanding of Copy Deletion by scattering the deletion to a PF deletion rule and Copy Deletion, where the partial effect is due to disruption of the latter by the former
