Ion heating in a plasma focus
Ion acceleration and heating in a plasma focus were investigated by the numerical integration of the three-dimensional equations of motion. The electric and magnetic fields given were derived from experimental data. The results obtained show that during the collapse phase of focus formation, ions are efficiently heated to temperatures of several keV. During the phase of rapid current reduction, ions are accelerated to large velocities in the axial direction. The results obtained with the model are in general agreement with experimental results
Nuclear Receptors as Therapeutic Targets for Neurodegenerative Diseases: Lost in Translation
Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by a progressive loss of neurons that leads to a broad range of disabilities, including severe cognitive decline and motor impairment, for which there are no effective therapies. Several lines of evidence support a putative therapeutic role of nuclear receptors (NRs) in these types of disorders. NRs are ligand-activated transcription factors that regulate the expression of a wide range of genes linked to metabolism and inflammation. Although the activation of NRs in animal models of neurodegenerative disease exhibits promising results, the translation of this strategy to clinical practice has been unsuccessful. In this review we discuss the role of NRs in neurodegenerative diseases in light of preclinical and clinical studies, as well as new findings derived from the analysis of transcriptomic databases from humans and animal models. We discuss the failure in the translation of NR-based therapeutic approaches and consider alternative and novel research avenues in the development of effective therapies for neurodegenerative diseases
Human Capital, Fertility, and Economic Growth
Our model of growth departs from both the Malthusian and neoclassical approaches by including investments in human capital. We assume, crucially, that rates of return on human capital investments rise, rather than, decline, as the stock of human capital increases, until the stock becomes large. This arises because the education sector uses human capital note intensively than either the capital producing sector of the goods producing sector. This produces multiple steady scares: an undeveloped steady stare with little human capital, low rates of return on human capital investments and high fertility, and a developed steady stats with higher rates of return a large, and, perhaps, growing stock of human capital and low fertility. Multiple steady states mean that history and luck are critical determinants of a country's growth experience.
Physical and chemical differentiation of the luminous star-forming region W49A - Results from the JCMT Spectral Legacy Survey
The massive and luminous star-forming region W49A is a well known Galactic
candidate to probe the physical conditions and chemistry similar to those
expected in external starburst galaxies. We aim to probe the physical and
chemical structure of W49A on a spatial scale of ~0.8 pc based on the JCMT
Spectral Legacy Survey, which covers the frequency range between 330 and 373
GHz. The wide 2x2 arcminutes field and the high spectral resolution of the HARP
instrument on JCMT provides information on the spatial structure and kinematics
of the cloud. For species where multiple transitions are available, we estimate
excitation temperatures and column densities. We detected 255 transitions
corresponding to 60 species in the 330-373 GHz range at the center position of
W49A. Excitation conditions can be probed for 16 molecules. The chemical
composition suggests the importance of shock-, PDR-, and hot core chemistry.
Many molecular lines show a significant spatial extent across the maps
including high density tracers (e.g. HCN, HNC, CS, HCO+) and tracers of
UV-irradiation (e.g. CN and C2H). Large variations are seen between the
sub-regions with mostly blue-shifted emission toward the Eastern tail, mostly
red-shifted emission toward the Northern clump, and emission peaking around the
expected source velocity toward the South-west clump. A comparison of column
density ratios of characteristic species observed toward W49A to Galactic PDRs
suggests that while the chemistry toward the W49A center is driven by a
combination of UV-irradiation and shocks, UV-irradiation dominates for the
Northern Clump, Eastern tail, and South-west clump regions. A comparison to a
starburst galaxy and an AGN suggests similar C2H, CN, and H2CO abundances (with
respect to the dense gas tracer 34CS) between the ~0.8 pc scale probed for W49A
and the >1 kpc regions in external galaxies with global star-formation.Comment: Proposed for acceptance in A&A, abstract abridge
Distributed computing system with dual independent communications paths between computers and employing split tokens
This is a distributed computing system providing flexible fault tolerance; ease of software design and concurrency specification; and dynamic balance of the loads. The system comprises a plurality of computers each having a first input/output interface and a second input/output interface for interfacing to communications networks each second input/output interface including a bypass for bypassing the associated computer. A global communications network interconnects the first input/output interfaces for providing each computer the ability to broadcast messages simultaneously to the remainder of the computers. A meshwork communications network interconnects the second input/output interfaces providing each computer with the ability to establish a communications link with another of the computers bypassing the remainder of computers. Each computer is controlled by a resident copy of a common operating system. Communications between respective ones of computers is by means of split tokens each having a moving first portion which is sent from computer to computer and a resident second portion which is disposed in the memory of at least one of computer and wherein the location of the second portion is part of the first portion. The split tokens represent both functions to be executed by the computers and data to be employed in the execution of the functions. The first input/output interfaces each include logic for detecting a collision between messages and for terminating the broadcasting of a message whereby collisions between messages are detected and avoided
Assessing the Proposed IAM, UAW, and USW Merger: Critical Issues and Potential Outcomes
[Excerpt] We examine the many difficult issues facing the IAM, UAW, and USW as they move toward the creation of a single organization. In order to place this merger in con- text, the larger issue of mergers in the American labor movement will be addressed, as will the origins and history of each of the three unions. The specific issues confronting the unions will be examined in three categories — structure, administration, and functions and services. We conclude with an assessment of the current status of the unification effort and the prospects for its realization
Ion observations from geosynchronous orbit as a proxy for ion cyclotron wave growth during storm times
[1] There is still much to be understood about the processes contributing to relativistic electron enhancements and losses in the radiation belts. Wave particle interactions with both whistler and electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves may precipitate or accelerate these electrons. This study examines the relation between EMIC waves and resulting relativistic electron flux levels after geomagnetic storms. A proxy for enhanced EMIC waves is developed using Los Alamos National Laboratory Magnetospheric Plasma Analyzer plasma data from geosynchronous orbit in conjunction with linear theory. In a statistical study using superposed epoch analysis, it is found that for storms resulting in net relativistic electron losses, there is a greater occurrence of enhanced EMIC waves. This is consistent with the hypothesis that EMIC waves are a primary mechanism for the scattering of relativistic electrons and thus cause losses of such particles from the magnetosphere
Testing Gravity in the Outer Solar System: Results from Trans-Neptunian Objects
The inverse square law of gravity is poorly probed by experimental tests at
distances of ~ 10 AUs. Recent analysis of the trajectory of the Pioneer 10 and
11 spacecraft have shown an unmodeled acceleration directed toward the Sun
which was not explained by any obvious spacecraft systematics, and occurred
when at distances greater than 20 AUs from the Sun. If this acceleration
represents a departure from Newtonian gravity or is indicative of an additional
mass distribution in the outer solar system, it should be detectable in the
orbits of Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs). To place limits on deviations from
Newtonian gravity, we have selected a well observed sample of TNOs found
orbiting between 20 and 100 AU from the Sun. By examining their orbits with
modified orbital fitting software, we place tight limits on the perturbations
