Collective pinning of a frozen vortex liquid in ultrathin superconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_7 films
The linear dynamic response of the two-dimensional (2D) vortex medium in
ultrathin YBa_2Cu_3O_7 films was studied by measuring their ac sheet impedance
Z over a broad range of frequencies \omega. With decreasing temperature the
dissipative component of Z exhibits, at a temperature T*(\omega) well above the
melting temperature of a 2D vortex crystal, a crossover from a thermally
activated regime involving single vortices to a regime where the response has
features consistent with a description in terms of a collectively pinned vortex
manifold. This suggests the idea of a vortex liquid which, below T*(\omega),

The fully frustrated XY model with next nearest neighbor interaction
We introduce a fully frustrated XY model with nearest neighbor (nn) and next
nearest neighbor (nnn) couplings which can be realized in Josephson junction
arrays. We study the phase diagram for ( is the ratio
between nnn and nn couplings). When an Ising and a
Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions are present. Both critical
temperatures decrease with increasing . For the array
undergoes a sequence of two transitions. On raising the temperature first the
two sublattices decouple from each other and then, at higher temperatures, each

Possible first order transition in the two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau model induced by thermally fluctuating vortex cores
We study the two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau model of a neutral superfluid in
the vicinity of the vortex unbinding transition. The model is mapped onto an
effective interacting vortex gas by a systematic perturbative elimination of
all fluctuating degrees of freedom (amplitude {\em and} phase of the order
parameter field) except the vortex positions. In the Coulomb gas descriptions
derived previously in the literature, thermal amplitude fluctuations were
neglected altogether. We argue that, if one includes the latter, the vortices
still form a two- dimensional Coulomb gas, but the vortex fugacity can be
substantially raised. Under the assumption that Minnhagen's generic phase
diagram of the two- dimensional Coulomb gas is correct, our results then point
to a first order transition rather than a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition,
provided the Ginzburg-Landau correlation length is large enough in units of a
microscopic cutoff length for fluctuations. The experimental relevance of these

Fluctuation-dissipation theorem and flux noise in overdamped Josephson junction arrays
The form of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for a resistively shunted
Josephson juction array is derived with the help of the method which
explicitely takes into acoount screening effects. This result is used to
express the flux noise power spectrum in terms of frequency dependent sheet
impedance of the array. The relation between noise amplitude and parameters of
the detection coil is analysed for the simplest case of a single-loop coil.Comment: ReVTeX, 8 page
Temperature and Frequency Dependence of Complex Conductance of Ultrathin YBa2Cu3O7-x Films: A Study of Vortex-Antivortex Pair Unbinding
We have studied the temperature dependencies of the complex sheet conductance
of 1-3 unit cell (UC) thick YBa2Cu3O7-x films sandwiched between semiconducting
Pr0.6Y0.4Ba2Cu3O7-x layers at high frequencies. Experiments have been carried
out in a frequency range between: 2 - 30 MHz with one-spiral coil technique,
100 MHz - 1 GHz frequency range with a new technique using the spiral coil
cavity and at 30 GHz by aid of a resonant cavity technique. The real and
imaginary parts of the mutual-inductance between a coil and a film were
measured and converted to complex conductivity by aid of the inversion
procedure. We have found a quadratic temperature dependence of the kinetic
inductance, L_k^-1(T), at low temperatures independent of frequency, with a
break in slope at T^dc_BKT, the maximum of real part of conductance and a large
shift of the break temperature and the maximum position to higher temperatures
with increasing frequency. We obtain from these data the universal ratio
T^dc_BKT/L_k^-1(T^dc_BKT) = 25, 25, and 17 nHK for 1-, 2- and 3UC films,
respectively in close agreement with theoretical prediction of 12 nHK for
vortex-antivortex unbinding transition. The activated temperature dependence of
the vortex diffusion constant was observed and discussed in the framework of
vortex-antivortex pair pinning.

The G0 Experiment: Apparatus for Parity-Violating Electron Scattering Measurements at Forward and Backward Angles
In the G0 experiment, performed at Jefferson Lab, the parity-violating
elastic scattering of electrons from protons and quasi-elastic scattering from
deuterons is measured in order to determine the neutral weak currents of the
nucleon. Asymmetries as small as 1 part per million in the scattering of a
polarized electron beam are determined using a dedicated apparatus. It consists
of specialized beam-monitoring and control systems, a cryogenic hydrogen (or
deuterium) target, and a superconducting, toroidal magnetic spectrometer
equipped with plastic scintillation and aerogel Cerenkov detectors, as well as
fast readout electronics for the measurement of individual events. The overall

Ingress of NaCl in concrete with alkali reactive aggregate: effect on silicon solubility
1/\omega-flux-noise and dynamical critical properties of two-dimensional XY-models
We have numerically studied the dynamic correlation functions in
thermodynamic equilibrium of two-dimensional O(2)-symmetry models with either
bond (RSJ) or site (TDGL) dissipation as a function of temperature T. We find
that above the critical temperature the frequency dependent flux noise

while the dynamic critical exponents and .
Contrary to expectation the TDGL results are in closer agreement with the
experiments in Josephson-junction arrays by Shaw et al., than those from the
RSJ model. We find that these results are related to anomalous vortex diffusion

Complex speech-language therapy interventions for stroke-related aphasia: The RELEASE study incorporating a systematic review and individual participant data network meta-analysis
Background: People with language problems following stroke (aphasia) benefit from speech and language therapy. Optimising speech and language therapy for aphasia recovery is a research priority. Objectives: The objectives were to explore patterns and predictors of language and communication recovery, optimum speech and language therapy intervention provision, and whether or not effectiveness varies by participant subgroup or language domain. Design: This research comprised a systematic review, a meta-analysis and a network meta-analysis of individual participant data. Setting: Participant data were collected in research and clinical settings. Interventions: The intervention under investigation was speech and language therapy for aphasia after stroke. Main outcome measures: The main outcome measures were absolute changes in language scores from baseline on overall language ability, auditory comprehension, spoken language, reading comprehension, writing and functional communication. Data sources and participants: Electronic databases were systematically searched, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Linguistic and Language Behavior Abstracts and SpeechBITE (searched from inception to 2015). The results were screened for eligibility, and published and unpublished data sets (randomised controlled trials, non-randomised controlled trials, cohort studies, case series, registries) with at least 10 individual participant data reporting aphasia duration and severity were identified. Existing collaborators and primary researchers named in identified records were invited to contribute electronic data sets. Individual participant data in the public domain were extracted. Review methods: Data on demographics, speech and language therapy interventions, outcomes and quality criteria were independently extracted by two reviewers, or available as individual participant data data sets. Meta-analysis and network meta-analysis were used to generate hypotheses. Results: We retrieved 5928 individual participant data from 174 data sets across 28 countries, comprising 75 electronic (3940 individual participant data), 47 randomised controlled trial (1778 individual participant data) and 91 speech and language therapy intervention (2746 individual participant data) data sets. The median participant age was 63 years (interquartile range 53-72 years). We identified 53 unavailable, but potentially eligible, randomised controlled trials (46 of these appeared to include speech and language therapy). Relevant individual participant data were filtered into each analysis. Statistically significant predictors of recovery included age (functional communication, individual participant data: 532, n = 14 randomised controlled trials) and sex (overall language ability, individual participant data: 482, n = 11 randomised controlled trials; functional communication, individual participant data: 532, n = 14 randomised controlled trials). Older age and being a longer time since aphasia onset predicted poorer recovery. A negative relationship between baseline severity score and change from baseline (p < 0.0001) may reflect the reduced improvement possible from high baseline scores. The frequency, duration, intensity and dosage of speech and language therapy were variously associated with auditory comprehension, naming and functional communication recovery. There were insufficient data to examine spontaneous recovery. The greatest overall gains in language ability [14.95 points (95% confidence interval 8.7 to 21.2 points) on the Western Aphasia Battery-Aphasia Quotient] and functional communication [0.78 points (95% confidence interval 0.48 to 1.1 points) on the Aachen Aphasia Test-Spontaneous Communication] were associated with receiving speech and language therapy 4 to 5 days weekly; for auditory comprehension [5.86 points (95% confidence interval 1.6 to 10.0 points) on the Aachen Aphasia Test-Token Test], the greatest gains were associated with receiving speech and language therapy 3 to 4 days weekly. The greatest overall gains in language ability [15.9 points (95% confidence interval 8.0 to 23.6 points) on the Western Aphasia Battery-Aphasia Quotient] and functional communication [0.77 points (95% confidence interval 0.36 to 1.2 points) on the Aachen Aphasia Test-Spontaneous Communication] were associated with speech and language therapy participation from 2 to 4 (and more than 9) hours weekly, whereas the highest auditory comprehension gains [7.3 points (95% confidence interval 4.1 to 10.5 points) on the Aachen Aphasia Test-Token Test] were associated with speech and language therapy participation in excess of 9 hours weekly (with similar gains notes for 4 hours weekly). While clinically similar gains were made alongside different speech and language therapy intensities, the greatest overall gains in language ability [18.37 points (95% confidence interval 10.58 to 26.16 points) on the Western Aphasia Battery-Aphasia Quotient] and auditory comprehension [5.23 points (95% confidence interval 1.51 to 8.95 points) on the Aachen Aphasia Test-Token Test] were associated with 20-50 hours of speech and language therapy. Network meta-analyses on naming and the duration of speech and language therapy interventions across language outcomes were unstable. Relative variance was acceptable (< 30%). Subgroups may benefit from specific interventions. Limitations: Data sets were graded as being at a low risk of bias but were predominantly based on highly selected research participants, assessments and interventions, thereby limiting generalisability. Conclusions: Frequency, intensity and dosage were associated with language gains from baseline, but varied by domain and subgroup
Internationalisation and migrant academics: the hidden narratives of mobility
Internationalisation is a dominant policy discourse in higher education today. It is invariably presented as an ideologically neutral, coherent, disembodied, knowledgedriven policy intervention - an unconditional good. Yet it is a complex assemblage of values linked not only to economic growth and prosperity, but also to global citizenship, transnational identity capital, social cohesion, intercultural competencies and soft power (Clifford and Montgomery 2014; De Wit et al. 2015; Kim 2017; Lomer 2016; Stier 2004). Mobility is the sine qua non of the global academy (Sheller 2014). International movements, flows and networks are perceived as valuable transnational and transferable identity capital and as counterpoints to intellectual parochialism. Fluidity metaphors abound as an antidote to stasis e.g. flows, flux and circulations (Urry 2007). For some, internationalisation is conceptually linked to the political economy of neoliberalism and the spatial extension of the market, risking commodification and commercialisation (Matus and Talburt 2009). Others raise questions about what/whose knowledge is circulating and whether internationalisation is a form of re-colonisation and convergence that seeks to homogenise higher education systems (Stromquist 2007). Internationalisation policies and practices, it seems, are complex entanglements of economic, political, social and affective domains. They are mechanisms for driving the global knowledge 2 economy and the fulfilment of personal aspirations (Hoffman 2009). Academic geographical mobility is often conflated with social mobility and career advancement (Leung 2017). However, Robertson (2010: 646) suggested that ‘the romance of movement and mobility ought to be the first clue that this is something we ought to be particularly curious about.
