Large-N mesons
We present an update of our project of computing the meson spectrum and decay
constants in large-N QCD. The results are obtained in the quenched
approximation with the Wilson fermion action for N = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 17
and extrapolated to infinite N. We non-perturbatively determine the
renormalization factors for local quark bilinears that are needed to compute
the decay constants. We extrapolate our SU(7) results to the continuum limit,
employing four different lattice spacings.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, presented at the 31st International Symposium on

G_2 gauge theory at finite temperature
The gauge group being centreless, gauge theory is a good laboratory for
studying the role of the centre of the group for colour confinement in
Yang-Mills gauge theories. In this paper, we investigate pure gauge
theory at finite temperature on the lattice. By studying the finite size
scaling of the plaquette, the Polyakov loop and their susceptibilities, we show
that a deconfinement phase transition takes place. The analysis of the
pseudocritical exponents give strong evidence of the deconfinement transition
being first order. Implications of our findings for scenarios of colour
confinement are discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure
Quantifying rate dependence of hysteretic systems
Hysteresis nonlinearities are formally defined as deterministic, rate-independent operators for a great variety of systems. Rate independence frequently occurs in problems in which the time scales of interest are much longer than the intrinsic time scales of the system. In this paper we propose a measure of rate dependence and numerically evaluate the corresponding metric for two rate-dependent systems, namely, a linearly viscous damper and a class of shape memory materials exhibiting thermomechanical behavior [1]. The rate-independent extended Bouc-Wen model of hysteresis [2] is used to validate the robustness of our rate-independence criterion. On the other hand, the shown rate dependence in shape memory materials working in nonisothermal conditions is associated with the ensuing thermomechanical coupling

Apolarity, Hessian and Macaulay polynomials
A result by Macaulay states that an Artinian graded Gorenstein ring R of
socle dimension one and socle degree b can be realized as the apolar ring of a
homogeneous polynomial f of degree b. If R is the Jacobian ring of a smooth
hypersurface g=0, then b is just equal to the degree of the Hessian polynomial
of g. In this paper we investigate the relationship between f and the Hessian
polynomial of g.Comment: 12 pages. Improved exposition, minor correction
Use of Narbonne vetch grain (Vicia narbonensis) in Charolaise bull feeding: effect on in vitam and post mortem performances and on quality of meat
The addition of Narbonne vetch grain in the diet of 20 Charolaise bulls (420 ± 44 BW), during the finishing period (100 days), was investigated to study the effects on in vitam and post mortem performances and on quality of meat. No significant differences for ADWG ("Vetch" 1.55 kg/d vs. "Control" 1.40 kg/d; P = 0.34), FCR ("Vetch" 7.10 kg/kg vs. "Control" 7.49 kg/kg; P = 0.93) and yield ("Vetch" 60.97% vs. "Control" 62.13%: P = 0.33) were observed. The nutritional and physical characteristics of Longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle showed no significant differences for Crude Protein ("Vetch" 22.47 vs. "Control" 22.36; P = 0.80), Fat ("Vetch" 2.56 vs "Control" 2.49; P = 0.87), Energy ("Vetch" 1130 vs. "Control" 1119; P = 0.79), TBARs ("Vetch" 0.063 vs. "Control" 0.069; P = 0.72), Luminosity ("Vetch" 46.47 vs. "Control" 43.43; P = 0.11), Hue ("Vetch" 0.6 vs. "Control" 0.6; P = 0.16), Chrome ("Vetch" 27.64 vs. "Control" 25.5; P = 0.56), Cooking loss ("Vetch" 26.77% vs. "Control" 28.62%; P = 0.33) and WBS ("Vetch" 3.4 kg f/cm2 vs. "Control" 3.3 kg f/cm2; P = 0.76). These preliminary results show interest towards the vetch grain as a protein source in the finishing period of bulls
Comparison of ionospheric scintillation models with experimental data for satellite navigation applications
A comparison between two of the most used scintillation models and experimental data is presented. The experimental data have been derived from a GPS scintillation monitor developed at Cornell University and placed in Tucuman (Argentina), under the peak of the anomaly. The models used (GISM and WBMOD) have been run for the geophysical conditions corresponding to the measurements. The comparison is done by subdividing the information on the basis of an ionospheric grid of 5°×5° surface square boxes. The comparison has been performed for several local times, from 18 LT until 04 LT. Here, only a few cases of particular interest are shown. The goal is to understand if the models are able to forecast actual scintillation morphology (from the satellite navigation systems point of view) and if they could be used to yield an estimate of scintillation effects on satellite navigation systems
Water extract of Cryphaea heteromalla (Hedw.) D. Mohr bryophyte as a natural powerful source of biologically active compounds
Bryophytes comprise of the mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. Cryphaea heteromalla, (Hedw.) D. Mohr, is a non-vascular lower plant belonging to mosses group. To the date, the most chemically characterized species belong to the liverworts, while only 3.2% and 8.8% of the species belonging to the mosses and hornworts, respectively, have been investigated. In this work, we present Folin–Ciocalteu and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) data related to crude extracts of C. heteromalla obtained by three different extraction solvents: pure water (WT), methanol:water (80:20 v/v) (MET), and ethanol:water (80:20 v/v) (ETH). The water extract proved to be the best solvent showing the highest content of biophenols and the highest ORAC value. The C. heteromalla-WT extract was investigated by HPLC-TOF/MS (High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Time of Flight/Mass Spectrometry) allowing for the detection of 14 compounds, five of which were phenolic compounds, derivatives of benzoic, caffeic, and coumaric acids. Moreover, the C. heteromalla WT extract showed a protective effect against reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation induced by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBH) on the murine NIH-3T3 fibroblast cell line
