    The Galam Model of Minority Opinion Spreading and the Marriage Gap

    In 2002, Serge Galam designed a model of a minority opinion spreading. The effect is expected to lead a conservative minority to prevail if the issue is discussed long enough. Here we analyze the marriage gap, i.e. the difference in voting for Bush and Kerry in 2004 between married and unmarried people. It seems possible to interpret this marriage gap in terms of the Galam model.Comment: 6 page

    Is sexism a gender issue? A motivated social cognition perspective on men’s and women’s sexist attitudes toward own and other gender

    The present research investigated the antecedents of ambivalent sexism (i.e., hostile and benevolent forms) in both men and women toward own and other gender. In two heterogeneous adult samples (Study 1: N = 179 and Study 2: N = 222), it as revealed that gender itself was only a minor predictor of sexist attitudes compared to the substantial impact of individual differences in general motivated cognition (i.e., Need for closure). Analyses further showed that the relationship between Need for closure and sexism was mediated by social attitudes (i.e., right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation), which were differently related to benevolent and hostile forms of sexism. In the discussion it is argued that sexism primarily stems from individual differences in motivated cognitive style, which relates to peoples? perspective on the social world, rather than from group differences between men and women

    The Impediments to Nigeria Understanding Oil Production Volumes, Losses and Potential Solutions

    The issue of the quantity of oil produced or missing has traditionally been played down in Nigeria. This is evident as no one in or outside Nigeria is able to quote a totally reliable production volume or loss figure. The aim of this study is thus to search for the root causes as to why there are difficulties in ascertaining the quantity of crude oil produced or missing per day and for potential solutions. The research assesses the present situation and problems requiring solution concerning Nigerian oil and gas measurement control. This is achieved through an intensive review of each of the notified bodies responsible for Nigeria’s oil and gas measurement control, using secondary resources. The bodies reviewed in this study are the Department of Petroleum Resources and the Weights and Measures Department. The study has identified knowledge impediments among the designated bodies. Also discovered were inadequate measurement equipment and absence of measurement guidelines, thus, no mechanisms were in place to address any mismeasurements or losses that are discovered. Provision of comprehensive training to the regulatory body to provide it with the necessary “teeth” to ensure effective delivery of it regulatory function has therefore been recommended as the key solution

    Top Management Team Diversity: A systematic Review

    Empirical research investigating the impact of top management team (TMT) diversity on executives’ decision making has produced inconclusive results. To synthesize and aggregate the results on the diversity-performance link, a meta-regression analysis (MRA) is conducted. It integrates more than 200 estimates from 53 empirical studies investigating TMT diversity and its impact on the quality of executives’ decision making as reflected in corporate performance. The analysis contributes to the literature by theoretically discussing and empirically examining the effects of TMT diversity on corporate performance. Our results do not show a link between TMT diversity and performance but provide evidence for publication bias. Thus, the findings raise doubts on the impact of TMT diversity on performance

    Initiatives to cultivate character and virtue in moral education at school continue to provoke sceptical responses. Most of those echo familiar misgivings about the notions of character, virtue and education in virtue – as unclear, redundant, old-fashioned, religious, paternalistic, anti-democratic, conservative, individualistic, relative and situation dependent. I expose those misgivings as ‘myths’, while at the same time acknowledging three better-founded historical, methodological and practical concerns about the notions in question

    Turning to God in the Face of Ostracism: Effects of Social Exclusion on Religiousness

    The present research proposes that individuals who are socially excluded can turn to religion to cope with the experience. Empirical studies conducted to test this hypothesis consistently found that socially excluded persons reported (a) significantly higher levels of religious affiliation (Studies 1, 2, and 4) and (b) stronger intentions to engage in religious behaviors (Study 2) than comparable, nonexcluded individuals. Direct support for the stress-buffering function of religiousness was also found, with a religious prime reducing the aggression-eliciting effects of consequent social rejection (Study 5). These effects were observed in both Christian and Muslim samples, revealing that turning to religion can be a powerful coping response when dealing with social rejection. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed
