Evidence for polar jets as precursors of polar plume formation
Observations from the Hinode/XRT telescope and STEREO/SECCHI/EUVI are
utilized to study polar coronal jets and plumes. The study focuses on the
temporal evolution of both structures and their relationship. The data sample,
spanning April 7-8 2007, shows that over 90% of the 28 observed jet events are
associated with polar plumes. EUV images (STEREO/SECCHI) show plume haze rising
from the location of approximately 70% of the polar X-ray (Hinode/XRT) and EUV
jets, with the plume haze appearing minutes to hours after the jet was
observed. The remaining jets occurred in areas where plume material previously
existed causing a brightness enhancement of the latter after the jet event.
Short-lived, jet-like events and small transient bright points are seen (one at
a time) at different locations within the base of pre-existing long-lived
plumes. X-ray images also show instances (at least two events) of
collimated-thin jets rapidly evolving into significantly wider plume-like
structures that are followed by the delayed appearance of plume haze in the
EUV. These observations provide evidence that X-ray jets are precursors of
polar plumes, and in some cases cause brightenings of plumes. Possible

Abstract: Very little attention has been paid to the effect disabilities have on the process of information retrieval, particularly those most likely to be effected, namely the print disabled. By print disabled we mean either blind or dyslexic people. While some attention has been paid to the needs of blind people, little or no attention has been paid to the information seeking needs of dyslexic people. The purpose of this proposed study is to examine the effect of dyslexia on information retrieval and ultimately to develop interfaces and tools which will help such users to improve their information seeking experience

Is head-shaft angle a valuable continuous risk factor for hip migration in cerebral palsy?
BACKGROUND: Reimer's migration percentage (MP) is the most established radiographic risk factor for hip migration in cerebral palsy (CP), and it assists surgical decision-making. The head-shaft angle (HSA) measures the valgus of the head and neck in relation to the shaft and may also be a useful predictor of hip migration at a young age. This study first defined normal values and investigated whether the head-shaft angle (HSA) is a continuous risk factor for hip migration in CP. METHODS: Three hundred and fifty AP pelvic radiographs of 100 consecutive children comprising the hip surveillance programme in our region were analysed for MP and HSA. Inclusion criteria were children with spastic CP and Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels of III-V, along with a minimum follow-up of 5 years. The mean age was 8.8 (range 3-18) years and the mean follow-up time was 7.5 (range 5-10) years. Radiographs of 103 typically developing children (TDC) were selected for the control group. The reliability of the measurements was determined. A random effects analysis was used to assess the relationship between MP and HSA for all data and for MP > 40 %. RESULTS: The TDC cohort had a mean HSA of 157.7° whilst that for the CP cohort was 161.7°. The value declined with age in both groups but remained consistently higher in the CP group. A random effects analysis considering the longitudinal data showed that there was no significant effect of HSA on MP. Similarly, when excluding CP patients with MP < 40 %, there was no significant effect of HSA on MP. CONCLUSIONS: This study found no correlation between HSA and hip migration in children with CP in this age group. Using the HSA as a routine radiographic measure in the management pathway across childhood does not offer any added value. Early enrolment onto the hip surveillance programme could offer a better prediction of hip migration using the HSA at a very young age. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: II retrospective prognostic study
Minimal basilar membrane motion in low-frequency hearing
Low-frequency hearing is critically important for speech and music perception, but no mechanical measurements have previously been available from inner ears with intact low-frequency parts. These regions of the cochlea may function in ways different from the extensively studied high-frequency regions, where the sensory outer hair cells produce force that greatly increases the sound-evoked vibrations of the basilar membrane. We used laser interferometry in vitro and optical coherence tomography in vivo to study the low-frequency part of the guinea pig cochlea, and found that sound stimulation caused motion of a minimal portion of the basilar membrane. Outside the region of peak movement, an exponential decline in motion amplitude occurred across the basilar membrane. The moving region had different dependence on stimulus frequency than the vibrations measured near the mechanosensitive stereocilia. Nonlinear force-free and potential field models of active-region and global coronal fields during the Whole Heliospheric Interval
Between 2008/3/24 and 2008/4/2, the three active regions NOAA active regions
10987, 10988 and 10989 were observed daily by the Synoptic Optical Long-term
Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) Vector Spectro-Magnetograph (VSM) while they
traversed the solar disk. We use these measurements and the nonlinear
force-free magnetic field code XTRAPOL to reconstruct the coronal magnetic
field for each active region and compare model field lines with images from the
Solar Terrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) and Hinode X-ray Telescope
(XRT) telescopes. Synoptic maps made from continuous, round-the-clock Global
Oscillations Network Group (GONG) magnetograms provide information on the
global photospheric field and potential-field source-surface models based on
these maps describe the global coronal field during the Whole Heliospheric
Interval (WHI) and its neighboring rotations. Features of the modeled global
field, such as the coronal holes and streamer belt locations, are discussed in
comparison with extreme ultra-violet and coronagraph observations from STEREO.
The global field is found to be far from a minimum, dipolar state. From the
nonlinear models we compute physical quantities for the active regions such as
the photospheric magnetic and electric current fluxes, the free magnetic energy
and the relative helicity for each region each day where observations permit.
The interconnectivity of the three regions is addressed in the context of the
potential-field source-surface model. Using local and global quantities derived
from the models, we briefly discuss the different observed activity levels of

An investigation into the perspectives of providers and learners on MOOC accessibility
An effective open eLearning environment should consider the target learner’s abilities, learning goals, where learning takes place, and which specific device(s) the learner uses. MOOC platforms struggle to take these factors into account and typically are not accessible, inhibiting access to environments that are intended to be open to all. A series of research initiatives are described that are intended to benefit MOOC providers in achieving greater accessibility and disabled learners to improve their lifelong learning and re-skilling. In this paper, we first outline the rationale, the research questions, and the methodology. The research approach includes interviews, online surveys and a MOOC accessibility audit; we also include factors such the risk management of the research programme and ethical considerations when conducting research with vulnerable learners. Preliminary results are presented from interviews with providers and experts and from analysis of surveys of learners. Finally, we outline the future research opportunities.
