Supersolids in confined fermions on one-dimensional optical lattices

Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that density-density and pairing correlation functions of the one-dimensional attractive fermionic Hubbard model in a harmonic confinement potential are characterized by the anomalous dimension KĻK_\rho of a corresponding periodic system, and hence display quantum critical behavior. The corresponding fluctuations render the SU(2) symmetry breaking by the confining potential irrelevant, leading to structure form factors for both correlation functions that scale with the same exponent upon increasing the system size, thus giving rise to a (quasi)supersolid.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, published versio

Multiple description video coding for stereoscopic 3D

    Get PDF
In this paper, we propose an MDC schemes for stereoscopic 3D video. In the literature, MDC has previously been applied in 2D video but not so much in 3D video. The proposed algorithm enhances the error resilience of the 3D video using the combination of even and odd frame based MDC while retaining good temporal prediction efficiency for video over error-prone networks. Improvements are made to the original even and odd frame MDC scheme by adding a controllable amount of side information to improve frame interpolation at the decoder. The side information is also sent according to the video sequence motion for further improvement. The performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated in error free and error prone environments especially for wireless channels. Simulation results show improved performance using the proposed MDC at high error rates compared to the single description coding (SDC) and the original even and odd frame MDC

The mountainous region of northern Pakistan is seismically active as Indian plate is subducting beneath the Eurasian plate. Various geological phenomena are active due to the mountain building and landslides are one of the most destructive natural disasters in the Karakoram range. The northern part of Pakistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, falling in this region is no exception to that. Attabad was a remote village situated on the right bank of Hunza River at a ground distance of almost 125 km from Gilgit city. The area falls into Darkut-Karakoram metamorphic complex composed of granites, granodiorite, and gneiss. A devastating landslide occurred on 4th January 2010, as mode of circular failure which blocked the Hunza River forming a lake behind. The debris material hit the opposite rock cliff, due to narrow gorge the landslide mass travelled downstream 1.5km with huge debris surges, hitting 8 houses in lower Attabad which came under rubble and 19 people died. Aga Khan Agency for Habitat previously FOCUS Pakistan developed an inventory of active landslides across the KKH in Hunza in 2000-2001, however this landslide was not identified. Later in 2002 after the Astore earthquake initial cracks developed at the top of the slope. The 8th October Kashmir earthquake destabilized and U-shaped demarcation appeared across the slope. Anthropogenic activities like irrigation of lands, seepage of water from rain and snow melt water further destabilized the land. Finally, an earthquake in November 2009 in Hindukush region triggered the landslide and brittle failure occurred on 4th January 2010

A cOIDInunity-based sero-epidemiological survey was undertaken to determine the age-specific prevalence rates of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection in a representative sample of 782 urban black children aged from newborn to 13 years. Among children aged Ā°-5 months, the prevalence ofantiHAV was 68,8% (95% confidence interval (Cl) 60,6 - 77,0%); this fell to a low of2,5% (Cl 0,1 - 4,9%) in those aged 6 - 11 months, implying the presence of maternal antibody in the first few months of life. By the age of2 years, 51,2% (Cl 45,7 - 56,7%) had anti-HAV, by age 4 the prevalence had risen to 81,4% (Cl 75,5 - 87,3%) and by age 6, the prevalence of anti-HAV was almost 100% (Cl 90,5 96,7%), reflecting the poor socio-economic and environmental conditions these children live in. The lowest prevalence of HAV infection among urban black South African children was during infancy, before the age at which the incidence rate rose sharply; e.g. lout of 5 children was already infected with HAV by its 2nd birthday. Vaccination in infancy will therefore have the biggest impact on the spread of HAV. However, before HAV vaccination in infancy is advocated, vaccine immunogenicity in infancy and the possible detrimental effect of maternal antibodies on the immunogenicity ofthe vaccine need clarification

In accordance with Law No. 20 of 2003 which is about the national education system, universities are obliged to provide education, research and community service. One element in the administration of higher education is a lecturer. Profesinalitas lecturers can be seen from the amount of responsibility in implementing Tri Dharma College is teaching, research and service to their community. Based on the Law of the Republic of Indonesia No. 14 of 2005 on Teachers and Lecturers, Article 51 Paragraph (1) Item b, that professors are entitled to promotions and rewards according to their academic performance. Lack of respect among lecturers will be one way in the development of academic management at each college and cultivate academic atmosphere, which in turn can accelerate the development of the scientific community of the present and the future as expected. The success of a teacher is the foundation of the success of a college, so it should be a college manages to trim faculty resources to achieve the earliest possible achievement by directing the concentration. A system to implement C.45 algorithm can be used to classify the performance and determination outstanding lecturers. C.45 algorithm as forming the decision tree in this case is not functioning optimally, but can support decision making in creating a superior faculty in their fields, and the creation of collaboration to mewujudukan quality education

An experimental study of the dual-fuel performance of a small compression ignition diesel engine operating with three gaseous fuels

    Get PDF
A dual-fuel engine is a compression ignition (CI) engine where the primary gaseous fuel source is premixed with air as it enters the combustion chamber. This homogenous mixture is ignited by a small quantity of diesel, the ā€˜pilotā€™, that is injected towards the end of the compression stroke. In the present study, a direct-injection CI engine, was fuelled with three different gaseous fuels: methane, propane, and butane. The engine performance at various gaseous concentrations was recorded at 1500 r/min and quarter, half, and three-quarters relative to full a load of 18.7 kW. In order to investigate the combustion performance, a novel three-zone heat release rate analysis was applied to the data. The resulting heat release rate data are used to aid understanding of the performance characteristics of the engine in dual-fuel mode. Data are presented for the heat release rates, effects of engine load and speed, brake specific energy consumption of the engine, and combustion phasing of the three different primary gaseous fuels. Methane permitted the maximum energy substitution, relative to diesel, and yielded the most significant reductions in CO2. However, propane also had significant reductions in CO2 but had an increased diffusional combustion stage which may lend itself to the modern high-speed direct-injection engine
