    T-odd correlations in charged Kl4 decays

    We analyse the sensitivity to physics beyond the SM of T-odd correlations in Kℓ4K_{\ell 4} decays, which do not involve the lepton polarization. We show that a combined analysis of KÎŒ4+K^+_{\mu 4} and KÎŒ4−K^-_{\mu 4} decays can lead to new constraints about CP violation in ΔS=1\Delta S=1 charged-current interactions, complementary to those obtained from the transverse muon polarization in KÎŒ3K_{\mu 3} and of comparable accuracy.Comment: 6 pages (LaTeX

    Concept development of a Mach 4 high-speed civil transport

    A study was conducted to configure and analyze a 250 passenger, Mach 4 High Speed Civil Transport with a design range of 6500 n.mi. The design mission assumed an all-supersonic cruise segment and no community noise or sonic boom constraints. The study airplane was developed in order to examine the technology requirements for such a vehicle and to provide an unconstrained baseline from which to assess changes in technology levels, sonic boom limits, or community noise constraints in future studies. The propulsion, structure, and materials technologies utilized in the sizing of the study aircraft were assumed to represent a technology availability date of 2015. The study airplane was a derivative of a previously developed Mach 3 concept and utilized advanced afterburning turbojet engines and passive airframe thermal protection. Details of the configuration development, aerodynamic design, propulsion system, mass properties, and mission performance are presented. The study airplane was estimated to weigh approx. 866,000 lbs. Although an aircraft of this size is a marginally acceptable candidate to fit into the world airport infrastructure, it was concluded that the inclusion of community noise or sonic boom constraints would quickly cause the aircraft to grow beyond acceptable limits using the assumed technology levels

    Siderite Dissolution in Mars-analog Brines: Kinetics and Reaction Products

    This study examines siderite (FeCO3) reactivity in MgCl2 and MgSO4 brines with varying salt concentrations (0.01M, 1M, and 3M) at both acidic (pH ∌ 2 and pH ≀ 2) and near-neutral (pH ∌ 7) conditions. We measured aqueous Fe concentrations through time to determine dissolution rates and characterized the solid reaction products with scanning electron microscopy, electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Iron-based siderite dissolution rates at pH 2 were equivalent in the 0.01M and 1M MgSO4 brines and slower in 3M MgSO4; rates in the MgCl2 brines slow systematically with increasing brine concentration for equivalent initial pH values. Fe-based dissolution rates could not be determined in the neutral pH experiments due to precipitation of iron (hydr)oxide phases. After 1 day in acidic brines, abundant etch pits were observed; however, in the neutral experiments, siderite was identified with Raman spectroscopy even after 1 yr of dissolution along with a range of iron (hydr)oxide phases. Scanning electron microscopy imaging of the neutral experiment products found Mg-sulfate brines produced a chaotic surface texture. Therefore, micron-scale textural observations could be used to discriminate between alteration in chloride and sulfate brines. Initial iron release rates were similar in dilute brines, but decreased by less than an order of magnitude in the two highest-concentration pH 2 brine experiments; therefore, siderite-bearing assemblages exposed to acidic fluids, regardless of salinity, would likely dissolve completely over geologically short periods of time, thus erasing siderite and likely other carbonate minerals from the geologic record.Funding was provided by NASA grant #NNX13AG75G and the School of Geosciences at the University of Oklahoma.Ye

    Observation of CP Violation in K(L)->pi+pi-e+e- Decays

    We report the first observation of a manifestly CP violating effect in the K(L)->pi+pi-e+e- decay mode. A large asymmetry was observed in the distribution of these decays in the CP-odd and T-odd angle phi between the decay planes of the e+e- and pi+pi- pairs in the K(L) center of mass system. After acceptance corrections, the overall asymmetry is found to be 13.6+-2.5 (stat) +-1.2 (syst)%.     Comparison of risk patterns in carcinoma and melanoma of the skin in men: a multi-centre case–case–control study

    We directly compared risk factors between 214 histologically confirmed melanomas (CMM), 215 basal-cell carcinomas (BCC) and 139 squamous-cell carcinomas (SCC) in a multiple case–case–control study with 349 controls from patients without dermatological disease admitted to the same hospitals. Subjects with fair hair had a significant risk increase for all types of tumours at a comparable level (ORadj for blonde hair: CMM 2.3; SCC 2.4; BCC 2.3). The effect of pale eyes was significant and similar for CMM and BCC (ORadj 2.6). Intermittent sun exposure measured in hours spent at beach during holidays was significant for both CMM (ORadj 2.6 for more than 7000 lifelong hours) and BCC (ORadj 2.1 for more than 7000 lifelong hours), while SCC exhibited a significant risk increase for chronic exposure to sunlight measured in hours of outdoor work (ORadj 2.2 for more than 6000 lifelong hours). In the case–case comparison using a multinomial logistic regression model, we found a statistically significant risk difference for pale eyes, and number of naevi in the CMM group, compared to other skin cancers. For intermittent sun exposure, there was a significant risk difference of BCC when compared to the risk of SCC. Factors influencing risk of SCC are different, with chronic exposure to sun playing a major role in causing this type of carcinoma
