A short proof of chaos in an atmospheric system
We will prove the presence of chaotic motion in the Lorenz five-component
atmospheric system model using the Melnikov function method developed by Holmes
and Marsden for Hamiltonian systems on Lie Groups.Comment: PACS: 02.20.Sv; 02.30.Hg; 02.40.-k; 92.60.-e. 5 page
Symmetry breaking for toral actions in simple mechanical systems
For simple mechanical systems, bifurcating branches of relative equilibria
with trivial symmetry from a given set of relative equilibria with toral
symmetry are found. Lyapunov stability conditions along these branches are
given.Comment: 25 page
The free rigid body dynamics: generalized versus classic
In this paper we analyze the normal forms of a general quadratic Hamiltonian
system defined on the dual of the Lie algebra of real -
skew - symmetric matrices, where is an arbitrary real symmetric
matrix. A consequence of the main results is that any first-order autonomous
three-dimensional differential equation possessing two independent quadratic
constants of motion which admits a positive/negative definite linear
combination, is affinely equivalent to the classical "relaxed" free rigid body
dynamics with linear controls.Comment: 12 page
Complete integrability versus symmetry
The purpose of this article is to show that on an open and dense set,
complete integrability implies the existence of symmetry
On the symmetry breaking phenomenon
We investigate the problem of symmetry breaking in the framework of dynamical
systems with symmetry on a smooth manifold. Two cases will be analyzed: general
and Hamiltonian dynamical systems. We give sufficient conditions for symmetry
breaking in both cases
Coherent strong-field control of multiple states by a single chirped femtosecond laser pulse
We present a joint experimental and theoretical study on strong-field
photo-ionization of sodium atoms using chirped femtosecond laser pulses. By
tuning the chirp parameter, selectivity among the population in the highly
excited states 5p, 6p, 7p and 5f, 6f is achieved. Different excitation pathways
enabling control are identified by simultaneous ionization and measurement of
photoelectron angular distributions employing the velocity map imaging
technique. Free electron wave packets at an energy of around 1 eV are observed.
These photoelectrons originate from two channels. The predominant 2+1+1
Resonance Enhanced Multi-Photon Ionization (REMPI) proceeds via the strongly
driven two-photon transition , and subsequent
ionization from the states 5p, 6p and 7p whereas the second pathway involves
3+1 REMPI via the states 5f and 6f. In addition, electron wave packets from
two-photon ionization of the non-resonant transiently populated state 3p are
observed close to the ionization threshold. A mainly qualitative five-state
model for the predominant excitation channel is studied theoretically to
provide insights into the physical mechanisms at play. Our analysis shows that
by tuning the chirp parameter the dynamics is effectively controlled by dynamic
Stark-shifts and level crossings. In particular, we show that under the
experimental conditions the passage through an uncommon three-state "bow-tie"
level crossing allows the preparation of coherent superposition states
Regulation of cellular sterol homeostasis by the oxygen responsive noncoding RNA lincNORS
We hereby provide the initial portrait of lincNORS, a spliced lincRNA generated by the MIR193BHG locus, entirely distinct from the previously described miR-193b-365a tandem. While inducible by low O2 in a variety of cells and associated with hypoxia in vivo, our studies show that lincNORS is subject to multiple regulatory inputs, including estrogen signals. Biochemically, this lincRNA fine-tunes cellular sterol/steroid biosynthesis by repressing the expression of multiple pathway components. Mechanistically, the function of lincNORS requires the presence of RALY, an RNA-binding protein recently found to be implicated in cholesterol homeostasis. We also noticed the proximity between this locus and naturally occurring genetic variations highly significant for sterol/steroid-related phenotypes, in particular the age of sexual maturation. An integrative analysis of these variants provided a more formal link between these phenotypes and lincNORS, further strengthening the case for its biological relevance
Wnt signaling in triple-negative breast cancer
Wnt signaling regulates a variety of cellular processes, including cell fate, differentiation, proliferation and stem cell pluripotency. Aberrant Wnt signaling is a hallmark of many cancers. An aggressive subtype of breast cancer, known as triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), demonstrates dysregulation in canonical and non-canonical Wnt signaling. In this review, we summarize regulators of canonical and non-canonical Wnt signaling, as well as Wnt signaling dysfunction that mediates the progression of TNBC. We review the complex molecular nature of TNBC and the emerging therapies that are currently under investigation for the treatment of this disease
Cause of Death and Predictors of All-Cause Mortality in Anticoagulated Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation : Data From ROCKET AF
M. Kaste on työryhmän ROCKET AF Steering Comm jäsen.Background-Atrial fibrillation is associated with higher mortality. Identification of causes of death and contemporary risk factors for all-cause mortality may guide interventions. Methods and Results-In the Rivaroxaban Once Daily Oral Direct Factor Xa Inhibition Compared with Vitamin K Antagonism for Prevention of Stroke and Embolism Trial in Atrial Fibrillation (ROCKET AF) study, patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation were randomized to rivaroxaban or dose-adjusted warfarin. Cox proportional hazards regression with backward elimination identified factors at randomization that were independently associated with all-cause mortality in the 14 171 participants in the intention-to-treat population. The median age was 73 years, and the mean CHADS(2) score was 3.5. Over 1.9 years of median follow-up, 1214 (8.6%) patients died. Kaplan-Meier mortality rates were 4.2% at 1 year and 8.9% at 2 years. The majority of classified deaths (1081) were cardiovascular (72%), whereas only 6% were nonhemorrhagic stroke or systemic embolism. No significant difference in all-cause mortality was observed between the rivaroxaban and warfarin arms (P=0.15). Heart failure (hazard ratio 1.51, 95% CI 1.33-1.70, P= 75 years (hazard ratio 1.69, 95% CI 1.51-1.90, P Conclusions-In a large population of patients anticoagulated for nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, approximate to 7 in 10 deaths were cardiovascular, whereasPeer reviewe
