    Optics studies based on the V6.503 nominal optics have been performed, aiming at improving the collimation efficiency by adjusting the phase advance from IP1 to IP5 to be π/2 off a multiple of 2π such that the off-momentum beta-beating is localized to the left side of the LHC ring. The off-momentum beta-beating in IR7 (betatron collimation section) is suppressed as expected. In addition to this main point, IR2 and IR8 injection optics are studied to improve the apertures of the inner triplet magnets.     The information system for LHC parameters and layouts

    The construction of the Large Hadron Collider, LHC, at CERN implies both the handling of a huge amount of information and the control of the coherence of this information. The LHC machine parameters have to be maintained coherent as the design evolves from the conceptual stage to the actual, installed, machine and have to be made available to all concerned. Design data is provided in many different formats from the machine builders, drawings, technical documents, meeting notes, lattice simulation input files, etc. The World Wide Web is being used to make the information accessible both at CERN and at the external collaborating laboratories. In this paper we describe the implementation of an Oracle database as the central common repository for machine parameters and of information for the automatic generation of CAD layout drawings and WWW pages. This system is integrated in a larger context, the EDMS system for the LHC project, which encompasses both the accelerator and the experiments

    A more robust and flexible lattice for LHC

    To correct more efficiently the arc dispersion, the exact antisymmetry of the LHC optics is now broken, except in the low-b triplets common to the two rings. A new quadrupole is added between the experimental insertions and the dispersion suppressors and several arc quadrupoles are complemented by a small trim quadrupole. The larger number of parameters gives flexibility to the lattice and allows a partial separation of the optical functions, with a decrease of the total number of quadrupole units. It is possible to change rather freely the phase advances of the arc cells. The nominal tunes are split by 4 units to reduce coupling. The bin boot tuning range in the experimental low-b is significantly increased, allowing e.g. a larger beam separation at injection. The super-periodicity of LHC remains 1. We plan to study whether it can be increased within the LHC hardware constraint

    Dynamical aperture studies for the CERN LHC: comparison between statistical assignment of magnetic field errors and actual measured field errors

    It is customary to evaluate the performance of a circular particle accelerator by computing the dynamical aperture, i.e. the domain in phase space where bounded singleparticle motion occurs. In the case of the LHC the dynamical aperture computation is performed by assuming a statistical distribution of the magnetic field errors of various magnets classes: the numerical computations are repeated for a given set of realisations of the LHC ring. With the progress in the magnet production and allocation of the available positions in the ring, the statistical approach has to be replaced by the computation of one single configuration, namely the actual realisation of the machine. Comparisons between the two approaches are presented and discussed in details.Â

    CLIC simulations from the start of the linac to the interaction point

    Simulations for linear colliders are traditionally performed separately for the different sub-systems, like damping ring, bunch compressor, linac, and beam delivery. The beam properties are usually passed from one sub-system to the other via bunch charge, RMS transverse emittances, RMS bunch length, average energy and RMS energy spread. It is implicitly assumed that the detailed 6D correlations in the beam distribution are not relevant for the achievable luminosity. However, it has recently been shown that those correlations can have a strong effect on the beam-beam interaction. We present first results on CLIC simulations that integrate linac, beam delivery, and beam-beam interaction. These integrated simulations also allow a better simulation of time-dependent effects, like ground perturbations and interference between several beam-based feedbacks

    Development, validity and responsiveness of the Clinical COPD Questionnaire

    BACKGROUND: The new Global Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines advice to focus treatment in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) on improvement of functional state, prevention of disease progression and minimization of symptoms. So far no validated questionnaires are available to measure symptom and functional state in daily clinical practice. The aim of this study was to develop and validate the Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ). METHODS: Qualitative research with patients and clinicians was performed to generate possible items to evaluate clinical COPD control. Thereafter, an item reduction questionnaire was sent to 77 international experts. Sixty-seven experts responded and the 10 most important items, divided into 3 domains (symptoms, functional and mental state) were included in the CCQ (scale: 0 = best, 6 = worst). RESULTS: Cross-sectional data were collected from 119 subjects (57 COPD, GOLD stage I-III; 18 GOLD stage 0 and 44 (ex)smokers). Cronbach's α was high (0.91). The CCQ scores in patients (GOLD 0-III) were significantly higher than in healthy (ex)smokers. Furthermore, significant correlations were found between the CCQ total score and domains of the SF-36 (ρ = 0.48 to ρ = 0.69) and the SGRQ (ρ = 0.67 to ρ = 0.72). In patients with COPD, the correlation between the CCQ and FEV(1)%pred was ρ =-0.49. Test-retest reliability was determined in 20 subjects in a 2-week interval (Intra Class Coefficient = 0.94). Thirty-six smokers with and without COPD showed significant improvement in the CCQ after 2 months smoking cessation, indicating the responsiveness of the CCQ. CONCLUSION: The CCQ is a self-administered questionnaire specially developed to measure clinical control in patients with COPD. Data support the validity, reliability and responsiveness of this short and easy to administer questionnaire

    COPD-Lower Respiratory Tract Infection Visual Analogue Score (c-LRTI-VAS) validation in stable and exacerbated patients with COPD

    BACKGROUND: We developed the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-Lower Respiratory Tract Infection-Visual Analogue Score (c-LRTI-VAS) in order to easily quantify symptoms during exacerbations in patients with COPD. This study aimed to validate this score. METHODS: In our study, patients with stable COPD as well as those with an acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) were included. The results of c-LRTI-VAS were compared with other markers of disease activity (lung function parameters, oxygen saturation and two health related quality of life questionnaires (St Georges Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) and Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ)) and validity, reliability and responsiveness were assessed. RESULTS: Eighty-eight patients with clinically stable COPD and 102 patients who had an AECOPD completed the c-LRTI-VAS questionnaire. When testing on two separate occasions for repeatability, no statistically significant difference between total scores was found 0.143 (SD 5.42) (p=0.826). Internal consistency was high across items (Cronbach's apha 0.755). Correlation with SGRQ and CCQ total scores was moderate to high. After treatment for hospitalised AECOPD, the mean c-LRTI-VAS total score improved 8.14 points (SD 9.13; p≀0.001). CONCLUSIONS: c-LRTI-VAS showed proper validity, responsiveness to change and moderate to high correlation with other questionnaires. It, therefore, appears a reliable tool for symptom measurement during AECOPD. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT01232140

    Pig-farming systems and porcine cysticercosis in the north of Cameroon

    A survey was conducted in 150 households owning 1756 pigs in the rural areas of Mayo-Danay division in the north of Cameroon. A questionnaire survey was carried out to collect information on the pig-farming system and to identify potential risk factors for Taenia solium cysticercosis infection in pigs. Blood samples were collected from 398 pigs with the aim of estimating the seroprevalence of T. solium cysticercosis. The results showed that 90.7% of the pigs are free roaming during the dry season and that 42.7% of households keeping pigs in the rural areas have no latrine facility. Seventy-six per cent of the interviewed pig owners confirmed that members of the household used open-field defecation. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for antigen and antibody detection showed an apparent prevalence of cysticercosis of 24.6% and 32.2%, respectively. A Bayesian approach, using the conditional dependence between the two diagnostic tests, indicated that the true seroprevalence of cysticercosis in Mayo-Danay was 26.6%. Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that a lack of knowledge of the taeniasis–cysticercosis complex and the absence of a pig pen in the household were associated with pig cysticercosis

    Overview of the LHC dynamic aperture studies

    The dynamic aperture (D.A.) of the LHC is estimated by tracking a thin-lens model of the lattice over a real machine time of 9 seconds. This raw result is then processed to predict the D.A. over longer times and realistic conditions. We discuss the reliability and limits of the method, the phenomena limiting the D.A. and scaling laws used for fast estimates. The long-term dynamic aperture at injection is close to the requirements, with prospects of further improvements
