Between August and September 2009, twenty four (24) Tilapia species, twelve (12) from each site were sampled from Jakara River and Kusalla dam in Kano, Nigeria with the view to determine the level of some heavy metals in the muscles of the fishes so as to assess their safety or otherwise for human consumption. The weight of each of the samples was determined using Gallenkamp weighing balance and recorded to the nearest grams. The fishes were dissected to separate the muscles from head, viscera and bones. Five grams of the muscle from each sample was digested using concentrated nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide solutions prepared in the ratio of 1:1. The digested samples were aspirated using 210 VGP Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer from which copper, zinc and lead were determined. The fish samples analysed from Jakara River had the mean copper, zinc and lead concentrations of 0.46+0.14mg/kg, 15.83+5.05 mg/kg and 0.57+0.20mg/kg and those from Kusalla dam had the means of 0.38+0.31mg/kg, 12.04+2.99 mg/kg and 0.54+0.29mg/kg respectively. Comparison of the above means with FAO standards for Cu (30mg/kg), Zn (30mg/kg) and Pb (0.50mg/kg) revealed that the mean concentrations of copper and zinc are safe for human consumption. However, the mean lead concentration exceeded the limit prescribed for human consumption. This suggests the possible adverse health effect such as damage to the gastrointestinal tract and chronic damage to the Central Nervous System among others that the people consuming Tilapia species from both study sites could be exposed to. It was recommended that considerable attention be paid to the lead content in fresh water fish at both sites by appropriate authorities due to its possible health implication on the consumers. Furthermore, continuous monitoring of heavy metals load in fish will be needed in Jakara River and Kusalla dam. Similarly, measures should be put in place to control the inflow of raw effluent into the river as they are largely the possible sources of these metals

    Get PDF
Plant-based coagulants are potential alternatives to chemical coagulants used in drinking water treatment. This paper examined the turbidity removal efficiency of Tamarindus indica fruit crude pulp extract (CPE) towards evaluating a low-cost option for drinking-water treatment. Laboratory analysis was carried out on high turbidity raw water samples (i.e. 478 NTU) using T. indica CPE of concentrations ranging from 500 to 3000 mg/L as natural coagulant, using jar tests. Results obtained showed turbidity removal efficiency of the coagulant ranging from 64 to 99%. An optimum dose of 3000 mg/L resulted in highest turbidity removal efficiency of 99%. However, the treated water samples were observed to be of high acidity with pH values lower than 3.0, suggesting the need for pH adjustment. Nevertheless, this study demonstrated the potentials of T. indica CPE in coagulating high turbidity surface water. Keywords: Coagulation; crude pulp extract, pH, turbidity removal, T. indic

    Get PDF
AbstractSorghum stalk juice preparation method is not yet fully explored and mainly still adopting those of cane juice. The suitability of pre-treatment to remove impurities and total phenolic compound to the growth rate of yeast in sorghum stalk juice, in aerobic and anaerobic fermentation needs to be evaluated. Process adopted for this research was liming method at 80 oC followed by addition of phosphoric acid. Liming method reduces juice turbidity to 82.43% ± 0.50% and gives specific growth rate (μ) of inoculated yeast of 0.38 h–1 (aerobic) and 0.17 h–1 (anaerobic). Other method evaluated was by addition of Poly-aluminium chloride (PAC), which gives higher juice clarity but negative impact to cell growth. The effect of total phenolic compound to the microbial growth was also studied. Phenolic compound was reduced through activated carbon absorption column. Reduction of 75% total phenolic compound in sorghum stalk juice promotes yeast cell growth rate up to 10.5% in aerobic condition compared to growth in clarified juice without phenolic compound reduction

Effect of Dust Accumulation on the Performances of Solar Panels in Static and Tracking Systems in Bauchi Metropolis of Nigeria

    No full text
The research aimed at comparing the effect of dust accumulation on the performances of solar PV modules in a static position and on a tracking system within the Bauchi metropolis of Nigeria, during the harmattan season – November to December. Dust deposition on the surface of the PV panels reduces the conversion efficiency by absorbing and preventing the Solar radiation from reaching the cells of the panel. This necessitated the need to develop a reliable tool to relate energy production from solar cells with respect to dust deposition on both static and solar tracking PV modules. A test bed was designed for the field measurement of output current, voltage, temperature and dust weight data from the two PV modules.” Centsys” polycrystalline solar panels () were used for the research. A statistical technique involving regression analysis in SPSS software was used to correlate the various measured data from the test bed to predict the effect of dust accumulation on the surface of each module, which will enable solar power installers to take necessary measures for improving the PV module’s conversion efficiency during the period under review. The research result showed that the effect of dust on the tracking solar PV module is less significant compared to the static panel, giving the former a better conversion efficiency.  &nbsp
