The Role of Ophthalmic Imaging in Central Nervous System Degeneration in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune connective tissue disorder that can involve any organ system. Central nervous system involvement can be a severe life threatening complication, ultimately resulting in severe neurodegenerative changes. Magnetic resonance imaging suggests that neurodegeneration, which may have deleterious effects on brain function, may occur early in SLE and experimental models suggest that neuroprotection may be feasible and beneficial. The retina is an extension of the brain. Recent ophthalmic imaging technologies are capable of identifying early changes in retinal and choroidal morphology and circulation that may reflect CNS degeneration. However, their utility in monitoring CNS involvement in SLE has been poorly studied as these have only been performed in small cohorts, in a cross-sectional design, non-quantitatively and without correlation to disease activity. The authors aim to review the current understanding of neurodegeneration associated with SLE, with particular focus on the visual pathway. We describe the neuropathology of the visual system in SLE and the evidence for retinal and choroidal neurodegenerative and microvascular changes using optical coherence tomography technology. We aim to describe the potential role of optical imaging modalities in NPSLE diagnosis and their likely impact on the study of neuronal function.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Human case of West Nile neuroinvasive disease in Portugal, summer 2015

    Get PDF
A case of West Nile virus (WNV) infection was reported in the Algarve region, Portugal, in the first week of September 2015. WNV is known to circulate in Portugal, with occasional reports in horses and birds (2004 to 2011) and very sporadically human cases (in 2004 and in 2010). Here we present the clinical and laboratory aspects related to the first human case of West Nile neuroinvasive disease reported in Portugal

A refinement relation for families of timed automata

Software Product Lines (SPLs) are families of systems that share a high number of common assets while differing in others. In component-based systems, components themselves can be SPLs, i.e., each component can be seen as a family of variations, with different interfaces and functionalities, typically parameterized by a set of features and a feature model that specifies the valid combinations of features. This paper explores how to safely replace such families of components with more refined ones. We propose a notion of refinement for Interface Featured Timed Automata (IFTA), a formalism to model families of timed automata with support for multi-action transitions. We separate the notion of IFTA refinement into behavioral and variability refinement, i.e., the refinement of the underlying timed automata and feature model. Furthermore, we define behavioral refinement for the semantic level, i.e., transition systems, as an alternating simulation between systems, and lift this definition to IFTA refinement. We illustrate this notion with examples throughout the text and show that refinement is a pre-order and compositional.European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalisation (COMPETE 2020), and by National Funds through the Portuguese funding agency, FCT, within project TRUST, POCI-01-0145- FEDER-016826. Artigo licenciado sob uma Licença Creative Commons: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"This study aims to evaluate the corrosion resistance of two nonnoble dental alloys, namely, the Wiron®88 (Ni–Cr–Mo) and the Remanium 2000+ (Co–Cr–Mo–W). A noble alloy, the V-Gnathos® Plus (AuPt) previously studied was also considered for the purpose of comparison. The study was conducted in artificial saliva, pH 7.1, at 37 °C, by cyclic and linear sweep voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronoamperometry. The Rp value of the alloy of high contents of Ni, the Wiron®88, was 26.2±0.2 kΩ cm2 and of the one with high contents of Co, the Remanium 2000+, was 22.5±0.6 kΩ cm2. Data from linear polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy lead to the same order for the resistance against corrosion. The order from the less to the more reactive alloy is: Wiron®88 → Remanium 2000+. The galvanic cell obtained by coupling the two nonnoble alloys presents very low cell potential (a few mV, -18 mV), while the galvanic cell between one noble alloy (the V-Gnathos® Plus) and the Wiron®88 showed a higher cell potential (-104 mV). Both galvanic couples, under short circuit, have lead to the release of cations, namely, Co2+, in the case of the Wiron®88|Remanium 2000+ and Ni2+ for the Wiron®88|V-Gnathos® Plus, galvanic couples, respectively, with the ionic concentrations reaching values of 12.15 and 7.30 μg L-1 (7.30 ppb), respectively. SEM micrographs obtained after 25 days immersion in artificial saliva, at 37 °C, showed the formation of well-defined pits on the surface of the two non-noble alloys.

    Composing Families of Timed Automata

    Get PDF
Featured Timed Automata (FTA) is a formalism that enables the verification of an entire Software Product Line (SPL), by capturing its behavior in a single model instead of product-by-product. However, it disregards compositional aspects inherent to SPL development. This paper introduces Interface FTA (IFTA), which extends FTA with variable interfaces that restrict the way automata can be composed, and with support for transitions with atomic multiple actions, simplifying the design. To support modular composition, a set of Reo connectors are modelled as IFTA. This separation of concerns increases reusability of functionality across products, and simplifies modelling, maintainability, and extension of SPLs. We show how IFTA can be easily translated into FTA and into networks of Timed Automata supported by UPPAAL. We illustrate this with a case study from the electronic government domain.POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016826. NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-00003

A procedure for splitting data-aware processes and its application to coordination

    Get PDF
We present a procedure for splitting processes in a process algebra with multiactions and data (the untimed subset of the specification language mCRL2). This splitting procedure cuts a process into two processes along a set of actions A: Roughly, one of these processes contains no actions from A, while the other process contains only actions from A. We state and prove a theorem asserting that the parallel composition of these two processes is provably equal from a set of axioms (sound and complete with respect to strong bisimilarity) to the original process under some appropriate notion of synchronization. We apply our splitting procedure to the process algebraic semantics of the coordination language Reo: Using this procedure and its related theorem, we formally establish the soundness of splitting Reo connectors along the boundaries of their (a)synchronous regions in implementations of Reo
