Spectral splits of neutrinos as a BCS-BEC crossover type phenomenon

We show that the spectral split of a neutrino ensemble which initially consists of electron type neutrinos, is analogous to the BCS-BEC crossover already observed in ultra cold atomic gas experiments. Such a neutrino ensemble mimics the deleptonization burst of a core collapse supernova. Although these two phenomena belong to very different domains of physics, the propagation of neutrinos from highly interacting inner regions of the supernova to the vacuum is reminiscent of the evolution of Cooper pairs between weak and strong interaction regimes during the crossover. The Hamiltonians and the corresponding many-body states undergo very similar transformations if one replaces the pair quasispin of the latter with the neutrino isospin of the former.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

A new pose-based representation for recognizing actions from multiple cameras

Get PDF
Cataloged from PDF version of article. We address the problem of recognizing actions from arbitrary views for a multi-camera system. We argue that poses are important for understanding human actions and the strength of the pose representation affects the overall performance of the action recognition system. Based on this idea, we present a new view-independent representation for human poses. Assuming that the data is initially provided in the form of volumetric data, the volume of the human body is first divided into a sequence of horizontal layers, and then the intersections of the body segments with each layer are coded with enclosing circles. The circular features in all layers (i) the number of circles, (ii) the area of the outer circle, and (iii) the area of the inner circle are then used to generate a pose descriptor. The pose descriptors of all frames in an action sequence are further combined to generate corresponding motion descriptors. Action recognition is then performed with a simple nearest neighbor classifier. Experiments performed on the benchmark IXMAS multi-view dataset demonstrate that the performance of our method is comparable to the other methods in the literature. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. In this note we introduce the concept of a lacunary statistical cluster (l.s.c.) point and prove some of its properties in finite dimensional Banach spaces. We develop the method suggested by S. Pehlivan and M.A. Mamedov [20] where it was proved that under some conditions optimal paths have the same unique stationary limit point and stationary cluster point. We also show that the set GammaxthetaGamma_x^{theta} of l.s.c. points is nonempty and compact

This study aims to determine the germination characteristics, pollen tube developments, effects of germination media and temperature and incubation durations of the pollens obtained from the four clones (11342, 11344, 11345 and 11351) of Cedrus libani A. Rich. (Lebanon Cedrus) obtained from clonalseed orchard (with national registration no: Eskisehir 117) between 2004 and 2006 as well as of those taken from clone no: 11351 in 2004. They were stored at 3°C for 13 months till they were investigated experimentally. MS medium was preferred for pollen germination for its relative superiority. Three-day incubation period at 33°C temperature, in dark was applied along with the MS medium. The highest germination rate in MS medium was achieved in clone no.11342 with 84.77% among the pollen samplesof 2005. On the other hand the germination rate of the pollens taken from clone no: 11351 was determined as 49.95%

Endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene polymorphisms associated with periodontal diseases in Turkish adults

Get PDF
Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS3) is involved in key steps of immune response. Genetic factors predispose individuals to periodontal disease. This study's aim was to explore the association between NOS3 gene polymorphisms and clinical parameters in patients with periodontal disease. Genomic DNA was obtained from the peripheral blood of 23 subjects with aggressive periodontitis (AgP), 26 with chronic periodontitis (CP), 31 with gingivitis (G) and 50 healthy controls. Probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI) were recorded as clinical parameters. We genotyped NOS3 polymorphisms using the PCR and/or PCR-RFLP method. Genotype frequencies differed significantly among periodontal diseases and controls for these polymorphisms. A significant association was detected between NOS3 +894 polymorphism and PD and CAL in the CP and AgP patient groups; whereas NOS VNTR analysis detected no associations with clinical parameters in theCP and AgP groups. However, a significant association was detected between the AA genotype and both PI and GI in patients with gingivitis; and a significant association was shown between the BB genotype and PI. The present study shows that two common polymorphisms of the NOS3 gene cluster are significantly associated with the occurrence of periodontal diseases

Infinite product representations of some q-series

For integers aa and bb (not both 00) we define the integers c(a,b;n) (n=0,1,2,)c(a,b;n)\ \ (n=0,1,2,\ldots) by \sum_{n=0}^{infty} c(a,b,;n)q^n = \prod_{n=1}^\infty \left(1-q^n\right)^a (1-q^{2n})^b \quad (|q|<1). These integers include the numbers tk(n)=c(k,2k;n)t_k(n) = c(-k,2k;n), which count the number of representations of nn as a sum of kk triangular numbers, and the numbers (1)nrk(n)=c(2k,k;n)(-1)^n r_k(n) = c(2k,-k;n), where rk(n)r_k(n) counts the number of representations of nn as a sum of kk squares. A computer search was carried out for integers aa and bb, satisfying 24a,b24-24\leq a,b\leq 24, such that at least one of the sums \begin{align} \sum_{n=0}^{infty} c(a,b;3n+j)q^n, \quad j=0,1,2, \end{align} (0.1) is either zero or can be expressed as a nonzero constant multiple of the product of a power of qq and a single infinite product of factors involving powers of 1qrn1-q^{rn} with r{1,2,3,4,6,8,12,24}r\in\{1,2,3,4,6,8,12,24\} for all powers of qq up to q1000q^{1000}. A total of 84 such candidate identities involving 56 pairs of integers (a,b)(a,b) all satisfying a\equiv b\pmd3 were found and proved in a uniform manner. The proof of these identities is extended to establish general formulas for the sums (0.1). These formulas are used to determine formulas for the sums \[\sum_{n=0}^{infty} t_k(3n+j)q^n, \quad \sum_{n=0}^{infty} r_k(3n+j)q^n, \quad j=0,1,2. \

Ninety-eight postnatal and six prenatal cases of thalassemia were studied by the reverse dot-blot hybridization technique in the city of Gaziantep, Turkey. We found the following mutations: IVS 1.110 (G>A) in 29.1%, IVS 2.1 (G>A) in 12.3%, IVS 1.1 (G>A) in 7.7%, Codon 8 (-AA) in 5.6%, -30 (T>A) in 4.6%, IVS 1.6 (T>C) in 4.6%, Codon 39 (C>T) in 3.6%, Codon 44 (-C) in 3.1%, IVS 2.745 (C>G) in 1.5%, Codon 8/9 (+G) in 2.1%, Codon 36/37 (-T) in 2.1%, IVS 1.5 (G>C) in 2.1%, Codon 22 (7pb del) in 0.5%, Codon 5 (-CT) in 0.5% while 20.9% were undetermined. 54 of the thalassemia patients were homozygotes, 12 were compound heterozygous and 31 were heterozygotes. In one allele of 5 thalassemia patients, - thalassemia mutation (3.7 single gene deletions in 1 patient, anti-3.7 gene triplication in 4 patients) wasdetermined at the same time. Finally, this is the first comprehensive study in this region and percentage of and - globin genes mutation is 2.6 and 79.4%, respectively
