Design and Implementation of a Measurement-Based Policy-Driven Resource Management Framework For Converged Networks
This paper presents the design and implementation of a measurement-based QoS
and resource management framework, CNQF (Converged Networks QoS Management
Framework). CNQF is designed to provide unified, scalable QoS control and
resource management through the use of a policy-based network management
paradigm. It achieves this via distributed functional entities that are
deployed to co-ordinate the resources of the transport network through
centralized policy-driven decisions supported by measurement-based control
architecture. We present the CNQF architecture, implementation of the prototype
and validation of various inbuilt QoS control mechanisms using real traffic

Urinary naphthalene and phenanthrene as biomarkers of occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
OBJECTIVES: The study investigated the utility of unmetabolised naphthalene (Nap) and phenanthrene (Phe) in urine as surrogates for exposures to mixtures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). METHODS: The report included workers exposed to diesel exhausts (low PAH exposure level, n = 39) as well as those exposed to emissions from asphalt (medium PAH exposure level, n = 26) and coke ovens (high PAH exposure level, n = 28). Levels of Nap and Phe were measured in urine from each subject using head space-solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Published levels of airborne Nap, Phe and other PAHs in the coke-producing and aluminium industries were also investigated. RESULTS: In post-shift urine, the highest estimated geometric mean concentrations of Nap and Phe were observed in coke-oven workers (Nap: 2490 ng/l; Phe: 975 ng/l), followed by asphalt workers (Nap: 71.5 ng/l; Phe: 54.3 ng/l), and by diesel-exposed workers (Nap: 17.7 ng/l; Phe: 3.60 ng/l). After subtracting logged background levels of Nap and Phe from the logged post-shift levels of these PAHs in urine, the resulting values (referred to as ln(adjNap) and ln(adjPhe), respectively) were significantly correlated in each group of workers (0.71 < or = Pearson r < or = 0.89), suggesting a common exposure source in each case. Surprisingly, multiple linear regression analysis of ln(adjNap) on ln(adjPhe) showed no significant effect of the source of exposure (coke ovens, asphalt and diesel exhaust) and further suggested that the ratio of urinary Nap/Phe (in natural scale) decreased with increasing exposure levels. These results were corroborated with published data for airborne Nap and Phe in the coke-producing and aluminium industries. The published air measurements also indicated that Nap and Phe levels were proportional to the levels of all combined PAHs in those industries. CONCLUSION: Levels of Nap and Phe in urine reflect airborne exposures to these compounds and are promising surrogates for occupational exposures to PAH mixtures
Development of a technology adoption and usage prediction tool for assistive technology for people with dementia

The aim was to develop a prediction model with the capability of prospectively assessing whether the assistive technology would be suitable for persons with Dementia (and their carer), based on user characteristics, needs and perceptions. Such a prediction tool has the ability to empower a formal carer to assess, through a very limited amount of questions, whether the technology will be adopted and used.EPSR
An Optimal UAV Deployment Algorithm for Bridging Communication

The final version is available from IEEE via the DOI in this record.In recent years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have attracted the attention of both the military and civilians because of their deployment in situations where part of the communication infrastructure is destroyed due to bomb blast, earthquake, flood, military operations or landslides. Also UAVs can be used in operations such as search and rescue, surveillance, forest fire monitoring, and border patrolling. Deployment of a UAV in a position where it can provide maximum coverage and high throughput is one of the vital problem that needs to be addressed. In this paper, we have proposed an optimal UAV deployment algorithm (OUDA) in order to bridge communication between two static nodes on the ground. In the proposed algorithm the UAV deploys to a position where it can provide the best communication facilities to both the nodes based on the received signal strength (RSS), and distance between nodes and UAV. Simulation results showed that the algorithm provides maximum throughput and low bit error rate (BER) once the UAV is fixed to an optimal position
Markovian Workload Characterization for QoS Prediction in the Cloud.
Resource allocation in the cloud is usually driven by performance predictions, such as estimates of the future incoming load to the servers or of the quality-of-service (QoS) offered by applications to end users. In this context, characterizing web workload fluctuations in an accurate way is fundamental to understand how to provision cloud resources under time-varying traffic intensities. In this paper, we investigate the Markovian Arrival Processes (MAP) and the related MAP/MAP/1 queueing model as a tool for performance prediction of servers deployed in the cloud. MAPs are a special class of Markov models used as a compact description of the time-varying characteristics of workloads. In addition, MAPs can fit heavy-tail distributions, that are common in HTTP traffic, and can be easily integrated within analytical queueing models to efficiently predict system performance without simulating. By comparison with trace-driven simulation, we observe that existing techniques for MAP parameterization from HTTP log files often lead to inaccurate performance predictions. We then define a maximum likelihood method for fitting MAP parameters based on data commonly available in Apache log files, and a new technique to cope with batch arrivals, which are notoriously difficult to model accurately. Numerical experiments demonstrate the accuracy of our approach for performance prediction of web systems. © 2011 IEEE
Effects of eddy vorticity forcing on the mean state of the Kuroshio Extension

The simulation explicitly resolves mesoscale eddies in the KE and is forced with air–sea fluxes representing the years 1995–2007. A mean-eddy decomposition in a jet-following coordinate system removes the variability of the jet path from the eddy components of velocity; thus, eddy kinetic energy in the jet reference frame is substantially lower than in geographic coordinates and exhibits a cross-jet asymmetry that is consistent with the baroclinic instability criterion of the long-term mean field. The vorticity budget is computed in both geographic (i.e., Eulerian) and jet reference frames; the jet frame budget reveals several patterns of eddy forcing that are largely attributed to varicose modes of variability. Eddies tend to diffuse the relative vorticity minima/maxima that flank the jet, removing momentum from the fast-moving jet core and reinforcing the quasi-permanent meridional meanders in the mean jet. A pattern associated with the vertical stretching of relative vorticity in eddies indicates a deceleration (acceleration) of the jet coincident with northward (southward) quasi-permanent meanders. Eddy relative vorticity advection outside of the eastward jet core is balanced mostly by vertical stretching of the mean flow, which through baroclinic adjustment helps to drive the flanking recirculation gyres. The jet frame vorticity budget presents a well-defined picture of eddy activity, illustrating along-jet variations in eddy–mean flow interaction that may have implications for the jet’s dynamics and cross-frontal tracer fluxes.A. The Capaciousness of No: Affective Refusals as Literacy Practices

Reading Research Quarterly published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. on behalf of International Literacy Association The authors considered the capacious feeling that emerges from saying no to literacy practices, and the affective potential of saying no as a literacy practice. The authors highlight the affective possibilities of saying no to normative understandings of literacy, thinking with a series of vignettes in which children, young people, and teachers refused literacy practices in different ways. The authors use the term capacious to signal possibilities that are as yet unthought: a sense of broadening and opening out through enacting no. The authors examined how attention to affect ruptures humanist logics that inform normative approaches to literacy. Through attention to nonconscious, noncognitive, and transindividual bodily forces and capacities, affect deprivileges the human as the sole agent in an interaction, thus disrupting measurements of who counts as a literate subject and what counts as a literacy event. No is an affective moment. It can signal a pushback, an absence, or a silence. As a theoretical and methodological way of thinking/feeling with literacy, affect proposes problems rather than solutions, countering solution-focused research in which the resistance is to be overcome, co-opted, or solved. Affect operates as a crack or a chink, a tiny ripple, a barely perceivable gesture, that can persist and, in doing so, hold open the possibility for alternative futures
Witnessing eigenstates for quantum simulation of Hamiltonian spectra
The efficient calculation of Hamiltonian spectra, a problem often intractable
on classical machines, can find application in many fields, from physics to
chemistry. Here, we introduce the concept of an "eigenstate witness" and
through it provide a new quantum approach which combines variational methods
and phase estimation to approximate eigenvalues for both ground and excited
states. This protocol is experimentally verified on a programmable silicon
quantum photonic chip, a mass-manufacturable platform, which embeds entangled
state generation, arbitrary controlled-unitary operations, and projective
measurements. Both ground and excited states are experimentally found with
fidelities >99%, and their eigenvalues are estimated with 32-bits of precision.
We also investigate and discuss the scalability of the approach and study its
performance through numerical simulations of more complex Hamiltonians. This
