An LU implicity scheme for high speed inlet analysis
A numerical method is developed to analyze the inviscid flowfield of a high speed inlet by the solution of the Euler equations. The lower-upper implicit scheme in conjunction with adaptive dissipation proves to be an efficient and robust nonoscillatory shock capturing technique for high Mach number flows as well as for transonic flows

Saving phase: Injectivity and stability for phase retrieval
Recent advances in convex optimization have led to new strides in the phase
retrieval problem over finite-dimensional vector spaces. However, certain
fundamental questions remain: What sorts of measurement vectors uniquely
determine every signal up to a global phase factor, and how many are needed to
do so? Furthermore, which measurement ensembles lend stability? This paper
presents several results that address each of these questions. We begin by
characterizing injectivity, and we identify that the complement property is
indeed a necessary condition in the complex case. We then pose a conjecture
that 4M-4 generic measurement vectors are both necessary and sufficient for
injectivity in M dimensions, and we prove this conjecture in the special cases
where M=2,3. Next, we shift our attention to stability, both in the worst and
average cases. Here, we characterize worst-case stability in the real case by
introducing a numerical version of the complement property. This new property
bears some resemblance to the restricted isometry property of compressed
sensing and can be used to derive a sharp lower Lipschitz bound on the
intensity measurement mapping. Localized frames are shown to lack this property
(suggesting instability), whereas Gaussian random measurements are shown to
satisfy this property with high probability. We conclude by presenting results
that use a stochastic noise model in both the real and complex cases, and we
leverage Cramer-Rao lower bounds to identify stability with stronger versions
of the injectivity characterizations.Comment: 22 page
WD0837+185:the formation and evolution of an extreme mass ratio white dwarf-brown dwarf binary in Praesepe
There is a striking and unexplained dearth of brown dwarf companions in close
orbits (< 3AU) around stars more massive than the Sun, in stark contrast to the
frequency of stellar and planetary companions. Although rare and relatively
short-lived, these systems leave detectable evolutionary end points in the form
of white dwarf - brown dwarf binaries and these remnants can offer unique
insights into the births and deaths of their parent systems. We present the
discovery of a close (orbital separation ~ 0.006 AU) substellar companion to a
massive white dwarf member of the Praesepe star cluster. Using the cluster age
and the mass of the white dwarf we constrain the mass of the white dwarf
progenitor star to lie in the range 3.5 - 3.7 Msun (B9). The high mass of the
white dwarf means the substellar companion must have been engulfed by the B
star's envelope while it was on the late asymptotic giant branch (AGB). Hence,
the initial separation of the system was ~2 AU, with common envelope evolution
reducing the separation to its current value. The initial and final orbital
separations allow us to constrain the combination of the common envelope
efficiency (alpha) and binding energy parameters (lambda) for the AGB star to
alpha lambda ~3. We examine the various formation scenarios and conclude that
the substellar object was most likely to have been captured by the white dwarf
progenitor early in the life of the cluster, rather than forming in situ.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ
Brown Dwarfs in the Pleiades Cluster. III. A deep IZ survey
We present the results of a deep CCD-based IZ photometric survey of a ~1 sq.
deg area in the central region of the Pleiades Galactic open cluster. The
magnitude coverage of our survey (from I~17.5 down to 22) allows us to detect
substellar candidates with masses between 0.075 and 0.03 Msol. Details of the
photometric reduction and selection criteria are given. Finder charts prepared

Distributed leadership, trust and online communities
This paper analyses the role of distributed leadership and trust in online communities. The team-based informal ethos of online collaboration requires a different kind of leadership from that in formal positional hierarchies. Such leadership may be more flexible and sophisticated, capable of encompassing ambiguity and rapid change. Online leaders need to be partially invisible, delegating power and distributing tasks. Yet, simultaneously, online communities are facilitated by the high visibility and subtle control of expert leaders. This paradox: that leaders need to be both highly visible and invisible as appropriate, was derived from prior research and tested in the analysis of online community discussions using a pattern-matching process. It is argued that both leader visibility and invisibility are important for the facilitation of trusting collaboration via distributed leadership. Advanced leadership responses to complex situations in online communities foster positive group interaction and decision-making, facilitated through active distribution of specific tasks
