    Effective Potential on Fuzzy Sphere

    The effective potential of quantized scalar field on fuzzy sphere is evaluated to the two-loop level. We see that one-loop potential behaves like that in the commutative sphere and the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism of the radiatively symmetry breaking could be also shown in the fuzzy sphere system. In the two-loop level, we use the heavy-mass approximation and the high-temperature approximation to perform the evaluations. The results show that both of the planar and nonplanar Feynman diagrams have inclinations to restore the symmetry breaking in the tree level. However, the contributions from planar diagrams will dominate over those from nonplanar diagrams by a factor N^2. Thus, at heavy-mass limit or high-temperature system the quantum field on the fuzzy sphere will behave like those on the commutative sphere. We also see that there is a drastic reduction of the degrees of freedom in the nonplanar diagrams when the particle wavelength is smaller than the noncommutativity scale.Comment: Latex 18 pages, some typos correcte

    Mott Transition and Spin Structures of Spin-1 Bosons in Two-Dimensional Optical Lattice at Unit Filling

    We study the ground state properties of spin-1 bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice, by applying a variational Monte Carlo method to the S=1 Bose-Hubbard model on a square lattice at unit filling. A doublon-holon binding factor introduced in the trial state provides a noticeable improvement in the variational energy over the conventional Gutzwiller wave function and allows us to deal effectively with the inter-site correlations of particle densities and spins. We systematically show how spin-dependent interactions modify the superfluid-Mott insulator transitions in the S=1 Bose-Hubbard model due to the interplay between the density and spin fluctuations of bosons. Furthermore, regarding the magnetic phases in the Mott region, the calculated spin structure factor elucidates the emergence of nematic and ferromagnetic spin orders for antiferromagnetic (U2>0U_2>0) and ferromagnetic (U2<0U_2<0) couplings, respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Journal of the Physical Society of Japa

    Non-Abelian BIonic Brane Intersections

    We study "fuzzy funnel" solutions to the non-Abelian equations of motion of the D-string. Our funnel describes n^6/360 coincident D-strings ending on n^3/6 D7-branes, in terms of a fuzzy six-sphere which expands along the string. We also provide a dual description of this configuration in terms of the world volume theory of the D7-branes.     Resolving brane collapse with 1/N corrections in non-Abelian DBI

    A collapsing spherical D2-brane carrying magnetic flux can be described in the region of small radius in a dual zero-brane picture using Tseytlin's proposal for a non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action for N D0-branes. A standard large N approximation of the D0-brane action, familiar from the brane dielectric effect, gives a time evolution which agrees with the Abelian D2-brane Born-Infeld equations which describe a D2-brane collapsing to zero size. The first 1/N correction from the symmetrised trace prescription in the zero-brane action leads to a class of classical solutions where the minimum radius of a collapsing D2-brane is lifted away from zero. We discuss the validity of this approximation to the zero-brane action in the region of the minimum, and explore higher order 1/N corrections as well as an exact finite N example. The 1/N corrected Lagrangians and the finite N example have an effective mass squared which becomes negative in some regions of phase space.     NGC 839: Shocks in an M82-like Superwind

    We present observations of NGC 839 made with the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) on the ANU 2.3m telescope. Our data cover a region 25" x 60" at a spatial resolution of ~1.5". The long axis of the field is aligned with the superwind we have discovered in this starburst galaxy. The data cover the range of 3700-7000 {\AA}, with a spectral resolution R~7000 in the red, and R~3000 in the blue. We find that the stellar component of the galaxy is strongly dominated by a fast rotating intermediate-age (~400 Myr) A-Type stellar population, while the gas is concentrated in a bi-conical polar funnel. We have generated flux distributions, emission line ratio diagnostics and velocity maps in both emission and absorption components. We interpret these in the context of a new grid of low-velocity shock models appropriate for galactic-scale outflows. These models are remarkably well fit to the data, providing for the first time model diagnostics for shocks in superwinds and strongly suggesting that shock excitation is largely responsible for the extended LINER emission in the outflowing gas in NGC 839. Our work may have important implications both for extended LINER emission seen in other galaxies, as well as in the interpretation of objects with "composite" spectra.     Targeting quiescent leukemic stem cells using second generation autophagy inhibitors

    In chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment induces autophagy that promotes survival and TKI-resistance in leukemic stem cells (LSCs). In clinical studies hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), the only clinically approved autophagy inhibitor, does not consistently inhibit autophagy in cancer patients, so more potent autophagy inhibitors are needed. We generated a murine model of CML in which autophagic flux can be measured in bone marrow-located LSCs. In parallel, we use cell division tracing, phenotyping of primary CML cells, and a robust xenotransplantation model of human CML, to investigate the effect of Lys05, a highly potent lysosomotropic agent, and PIK-III, a selective inhibitor of VPS34, on the survival and function of LSCs. We demonstrate that long-term haematopoietic stem cells (LT-HSCs: Lin−Sca-1+c-kit+CD48−CD150+) isolated from leukemic mice have higher basal autophagy levels compared with non-leukemic LT-HSCs and more mature leukemic cells. Additionally, we present that while HCQ is ineffective, Lys05-mediated autophagy inhibition reduces LSCs quiescence and drives myeloid cell expansion. Furthermore, Lys05 and PIK-III reduced the number of primary CML LSCs and target xenografted LSCs when used in combination with TKI treatment, providing a strong rationale for clinical use of second generation autophagy inhibitors as a novel treatment for CML patients with LSC persistence

    Inferring robust gene networks from expression data by a sensitivity-based incremental evolution method

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Reconstructing gene regulatory networks (GRNs) from expression data is one of the most important challenges in systems biology research. Many computational models and methods have been proposed to automate the process of network reconstruction. Inferring robust networks with desired behaviours remains challenging, however. This problem is related to network dynamics but has yet to be investigated using network modeling.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We propose an incremental evolution approach for inferring GRNs that takes network robustness into consideration and can deal with a large number of network parameters. Our approach includes a sensitivity analysis procedure to iteratively select the most influential network parameters, and it uses a swarm intelligence procedure to perform parameter optimization. We have conducted a series of experiments to evaluate the external behaviors and internal robustness of the networks inferred by the proposed approach. The results and analyses have verified the effectiveness of our approach.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Sensitivity analysis is crucial to identifying the most sensitive parameters that govern the network dynamics. It can further be used to derive constraints for network parameters in the network reconstruction process. The experimental results show that the proposed approach can successfully infer robust GRNs with desired system behaviors.</p

    Transgenic Zebrafish Recapitulating tbx16 Gene Early Developmental Expression

    We describe the creation of a transgenic zebrafish expressing GFP driven by a 7.5 kb promoter region of the tbx16 gene. This promoter segment is sufficient to recapitulate early embryonic expression of endogenous tbx16 in the presomitic mesoderm, the polster and, subsequently, in the hatching gland. Expression of GFP in the transgenic lines later in development diverges to some extent from endogenous tbx16 expression with the serendipitous result that one line expresses GFP specifically in commissural primary ascending (CoPA) interneurons of the developing spinal cord. Using this line we demonstrate that the gene mafba (valentino) is expressed in CoPA interneurons
