Analysis of Soil Quality for Hydrological Disaster Mitigation in Sub-Watershed of Krueng Jreue, Aceh Besar Regency-Indonesia

Land conversion of forest to non-forest has led to a reduction in soil fertility, exhibited by a lower soil quality index value (SQI) in the Sub-Watershed of Krueng Jreue. This study aimed to determine soil quality associated with various land uses using the SQI value approach. SQI is calculated based on the criteria proposed by Mausbach & Seybold (1998), which is suitable for field conditions using analysis of Minimum Data Set (MDS). The parameters analyzed include rooting depth, soil texture, bulk density, total porosity, pH of the soil, C-organic, N-total, P-available, K-exchangeable and soil respiration. The result showed that the quality criteria of the soil in the study area consists of three classes, namely: low, medium and high, which have soil quality index values of 0.27, 0.52, and 0.64 respectively. Based on the study's soil quality criteria, the area of research was mapped accordingly by class: (1) high, covering an area of 14016.98 ha (60.38%); (2) medium, covering an area of 8542,90 ha (36.79%); and low, covering an area of 658,18 ha (2.83%). Types of land use categorized as having high quality, were primary forest, secondary forest and residential area with respective values of 0.66; 0.64, and 0.63. Open land, grassland, moor, rice field and shrubs were of medium quality, with respective values of 0.47; 0.48; 0.52; 0.51 and 0.55. The main and additional components affecting the hydrological disaster vulnerability on soil quality parameters are land use change, and soil properties. The findings of this research have implications structural efforts to mitigate hydrological disasters (dams, catchment wells, biopori, tillage conservation, terracing), and non-structural efforts (maps of soil quality, agroforestry, cover crops, materials of soil conditioner, organic matter). These efforts are necessary to improve and maintain soil quality longitudinally

The phase-space structure of cold dark-matter halos: Insights into the Galactic halo

We study the formation of the Milky Way's halo in a Λ\LambdaCDM cosmology by scaling down a high resolution simulation of the formation of a cluster of galaxies. We determine how much phase-space substructure is left over from the objects that merge to build up the present galaxy. We study the debris streams originating from such objects and find that their evolution can be explained simply in terms of the conservation of phase-space density. Analysing the mass growth history of our halo we find that its inner regions have been in place for more than 10 Gyr, but that the growth of the halo as a whole is more gradual, in agreement with other high resolution simulations of dark-matter halos. Recent accretion contributes to the inner 10 kpc of the halo only at the 104^{-4} level. Finally we determine the number of dark-matter streams as a function of distance from the centre of the halo. In the equivalent of the ``Solar vicinity'', we find that the dark-matter is smoothly distributed in space, and that the velocity ellipsoid is formed by hundreds of thousands of streams, most of which have velocity dispersions of the order of 1 km/s or less.Comment: 16 pages, 21 figures, MNRAS in press. Filtration-enrichment methods for selecting auxotrophs and other mutants in Ascobolus immersus and similar filamentous fungi.

    Get PDF
Filtration-enrichment is a very successful method for obtaining auxotrophs, but traditional methods cannot be applied directly to many fungi lacking suitable asexual spores, mainly because of a heavy carry-over of parental nutrients into sexual spores. A procedure has been devised to apply filtration-enrichment to such fungi by using hyphal mutagenesis, crossing, germination of sexual spores, fragmentation of germination hyphae into small propagules, and then two cycles of filtration-enrichment in liquid minimal medium (LMM)

Cyberbullying prevention in schools:a literature review on cyberbullying and its supported theories and technologies

    Get PDF
Abstract. As education is recognized as a component of wellbeing, schools play a pivotal role in fostering students’ knowledge and skills to strengthen their social and emotional wellbeing, benefiting both individuals and the wider community. To fulfil this responsibility, schools must aim to prevent conflicts that may negatively impact students’ socio-emotional wellbeing, such as cyberbullying. Cyberbullying, a modern form of bullying facilitated by digital mediums, poses a growing concern due to its potential to cause serious mental and emotional harm to young people. As a relatively new field of study, cyberbullying prevention has gained significant interest from researchers, educators, parents, and policymakers. However, the current focus of research and prevention efforts primarily revolves around traditional bullying, leaving a gap in understanding and addressing cyberbullying adequately. This thesis aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice in cyberbullying prevention by exploring different prevention strategies through the lens of various theories. By conducting a comprehensive literature review, the study examines how these theories inform and support the prevention of cyberbullying within school settings. Furthermore, the research investigates the implementation and efficacy of these prevention strategies in real-world contexts

Halo Star Streams in the Solar Neighborhood

We have assembled a sample of halo stars in the solar neighborhood to look for halo substructure in velocity and angular momentum space. Our sample includes red giants, RR Lyrae, and red horizontal branch stars within 2.5 kpc of the Sun with [Fe/H] less than -1.0. It was chosen to include stars with accurate distances, space velocities, and metallicities as well as well-quantified errors. We confirm the existence of the streams found by Helmi and coworkers, which we refer to as the H99 streams. These streams have a double-peaked velocity distribution in the z direction. We use the results of modeling of the H99 streams by Helmi and collaborators to test how one might use v_z velocity information and radial velocity information to detect kinematic substructure in the halo. We find that detecting the H99 streams with radial velocities alone would require a large sample. We use the velocity distribution of the H99 streams to estimate their age. From our model of the progenitor of the H99 streams, we determine that it was accreted between 6 and 9 Gyr ago. The H99 streams have [alpha/Fe] abundances similar to other halo stars in the solar neighborhood, suggesting that the gas that formed these stars were enriched mostly by Type II SNe. We have also discovered in angular momentum space two other possible substructures, which we refer to as the retrograde and prograde outliers. The retrograde outliers are likely to be halo substructure, but the prograde outliers are most likely part of the smooth halo. The retrograde outliers have significant structure in the v_phi direction and show a range of [alpha/Fe]. The methods presented in this paper can be used to exploit the kinematic information present in future large databases like RAVE, SDSSII/SEGUE, and Gaia.Comment: 46 pages, 13 figures, and 9 tables.
