    Calculated and experimental Schmid factors for chip flow deformation of textured CVD α-alumina coatings

    A thorough analysis of Schmid factors (m) for three different (basal and two prismatic) slip systems and three different coating textures, (0001), (011\uaf2) and (112\uaf0), was done in order to understand the influence of CVD α-alumina coating textures on the ability of the coatings to deform plastically at different locations on the rake face of a cutting tool insert during a metal machining operation. Schmid factor diagrams were constructed using MATLAB/MTEX in order to visualize the angular dependence of an external force relative to the α-Al O crystals (grains) on the Schmid factor. The diagrams were also used to extract m-value frequency distributions for different slip systems and textures. In addition, lateral m-value distribution maps were obtained from experimental textured coatings using electron backscatter diffraction. These maps show the ability for neighboring grains to deform plastically in the coatings. Cutting tool inserts with differently textured α-Al2O3 coatings were subjected to dry machining of a quench-tempered steel. Using scanning electron microscopy, the microstructure and surface topography of the worn alumina layers were investigated and it was found that a flatter surface morphology and higher probability of discrete plastic deformation are connected to less wear. This was observed in the (0001)-textured sample, which also exhibited the highest m-values in the wear zone with highest temperatures and external forces. It was observed that basal slip is most easily activated, followed by prismatic slip systems 1 and 2 in this case. For (011\uaf2) and (112\uaf0) textured coatings the differences in m-values for the three slip systems are not that big, and the distributions are relatively wide. It is clear that the Schmid factor analysis forms a basis that is important for understanding crater wear, especially when it is connected to local plastic deformation, of textured CVD α-Al2O3 coatings. The methodology of this work can be expanded to other coating systems and also more generally to applications where it is of interest to analyze the deformation behavior and local plastic anisotropy of textured materials

    Could Collaborative Research between Two Major Libraries Help Consolidate Digital Preservation and Break the “Project Cycle”?

    The successful preservation of digital assets requires maintenance, continuity of service, and proactive stewardship.1 An ongoing challenge for Bodleian Libraries (of Oxford University) and Cambridge University Library (CUL) has been taking outputs from time-bound digital preservation projects and turning them into ongoing uninterrupted services. This is not a challenge which is specific to Bodleian Libraries and CUL, but it has been recognized as a difficult transition for many organizations to make. The Digital Preservation at Oxford and Cambridge (DPOC) project (2016–2018) is a collaboration between Bodleian Libraries and CUL which is supported and funded by The Polonsky Foundation. Bodleian Libraries and CUL have historically strong ties, and have previously collaborated on digital preservation projects. Both organizations also have experience creating digital preservation resources, for which stewardship at the end of projects has been transferred over to staff within the libraries for maintenance. However, siloed preservation activities have so far not translated into institution-wide, ongoing programmatic digital preservation activities

    Efficacy of an external chromia layer in reducing nitridation of high temperature alloys

    Six high temperature alloys have been exposed in N2/H2 environments at 900 \ub0C. In order to study the efficacy of a chromia barrier layer against nitrogen ingress, experiments were performed in two environments having the same N2/H2 ratio but slightly different water content, chromia formation being spontaneous in one case only. The samples were evaluated by SEM/STEM/EDX, XRD, gravimetry and GD-OES. The presence of an external chromia scale reduced nitridation of the alloy by 50–95%. Furthermore, in the presence of a continuous alumina layer no nitridation of the alloy was detected

    Smartphone Apps for Measuring Human Health and Climate Change Co-Benefits: A Comparison and Quality Rating of Available Apps.

    BACKGROUND: Climate change and the burden of noncommunicable diseases are major global challenges. Opportunities exist to investigate health and climate change co-benefits through a shift from motorized to active transport (walking and cycling) and a shift in dietary patterns away from a globalized diet to reduced consumption of meat and energy dense foods. Given the ubiquitous use and proliferation of smartphone apps, an opportunity exists to use this technology to capture individual travel and dietary behavior and the associated impact on the environment and health. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study is to identify, describe the features, and rate the quality of existing smartphone apps which capture personal travel and dietary behavior and simultaneously estimate the carbon cost and potential health consequences of these actions. METHODS: The Google Play and Apple App Stores were searched between October 19 and November 6, 2015, and a secondary Google search using the apps filter was conducted between August 8 and September 18, 2016. Eligible apps were required to estimate the carbon cost of personal behaviors with the potential to include features to maximize health outcomes. The quality of included apps was assessed by 2 researchers using the Mobile Application Rating Scale (MARS). RESULTS: Out of 7213 results, 40 apps were identified and rated. Multiple travel-related apps were identified, however no apps solely focused on the carbon impact or health consequences of dietary behavior. None of the rated apps provided sufficient information on the health consequences of travel and dietary behavior. Some apps included features to maximize participant engagement and encourage behavior change towards reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Most apps were rated as acceptable quality as determined by the MARS; 1 was of poor quality and 10 apps were of good quality. Interrater reliability of the 2 evaluators was excellent (ICC=0.94, 95% CI 0.87-0.97). CONCLUSIONS: Existing apps capturing travel and dietary behavior and the associated health and environmental impact are of mixed quality. Most apps do not include all desirable features or provide sufficient health information. Further research is needed to determine the potential of smartphone apps to evoke behavior change resulting in climate change and health co-benefits

    Understanding the theoretical underpinning of the exercise component in a fall prevention programme for older adults with mild dementia: a realist review protocol

    Background Older adults with mild dementia are at an increased risk of falls. Preventing those at risk from falling requires complex interventions involving patient-tailored strength- and balance-challenging exercises, home hazard assessment, visual impairment correction, medical assessment and multifactorial combinations. Evidence for these interventions in older adults with mild cognitive problems is sparse and not as conclusive as the evidence for the general community-dwelling older population. The objectives of this realist review are (i) to identify the underlying programme theory of strength and balance exercise interventions targeted at those individuals that have been identified as falling and who have a mild dementia and (ii) to explore how and why that intervention reduces falls in that population, particularly in the context of a community setting. This protocol will explain the rationale for using a realist review approach and outline the method. Methods A realist review is a methodology that extends the scope of a traditional narrative or systematic evidence review. Increasingly used in the evaluation of complex interventions, a realist enquiry can look at the wider context of the intervention, seeking more to explain than judge if the intervention is effective by investigating why, what the underlying mechanism is and the necessary conditions for success. In this review, key rough programme theories were articulated and defined through discussion with a stakeholder group. The six rough programme theories outlined within this protocol will be tested against the literature found using the described comprehensive search strategy. The process of data extraction, appraisal and synthesis is outlined and will lead to the production of an explanatory programme theory. Discussion As far as the authors are aware, this is the first realist literature review within fall prevention research and adds to the growing use of this methodology within healthcare. This synthesis of evidence will provide a valuable addition to the evidence base surrounding the exercise component of a fall intervention programme for older adults with mild dementia and will ultimately provide clinically relevant recommendations for improving the care of people with dementia

    Low frequency of defective mismatch repair in a population-based series of upper urothelial carcinoma

    BACKGROUND: Upper urothelial cancer (UUC), i.e. transitional cell carcinomas of the renal pelvis and the ureter, occur at an increased frequency in patients with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). Defective mismatch repair (MMR) specifically characterizes HNPCC-associated tumors, but also occurs in subsets of some sporadic tumors, e.g. in gastrointestinal cancer and endometrial cancer. METHODS: We assessed the contribution of defective MMR to the development of UUC in a population-based series from the southern Swedish Cancer Registry, through microsatellite instability (MSI) analysis and immunohistochemical evaluation of expression of the MMR proteins MLH1, PMS2, MSH2, and MSH6. RESULTS: A MSI-high phenotype was identified in 9/216 (4%) successfully analyzed patients and a MSI-low phenotype in 5/216 (2%). Loss of MMR protein immunostaining was found in 11/216 (5%) tumors, and affected most commonly MSH2 and MSH6. CONCLUSION: This population-based series indicates that somatic MMR inactivation is a minor pathway in the development of UUC, but tumors that display defective MMR are, based on the immunohistochemical expression pattern, likely to be associated with HNPCC

    Identification of multiple risk loci and regulatory mechanisms influencing susceptibility to multiple myeloma

    Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have transformed our understanding of susceptibility to multiple myeloma (MM), but much of the heritability remains unexplained. We report a new GWAS, a meta-analysis with previous GWAS and a replication series, totalling 9974 MM cases and 247,556 controls of European ancestry. Collectively, these data provide evidence for six new MM risk loci, bringing the total number to 23. Integration of information from gene expression, epigenetic profiling and in situ Hi-C data for the 23 risk loci implicate disruption of developmental transcriptional regulators as a basis of MM susceptibility, compatible with altered B-cell differentiation as a key mechanism. Dysregulation of autophagy/apoptosis and cell cycle signalling feature as recurrently perturbed pathways. Our findings provide further insight into the biological basis of MM.</p
